U-Turn Peer Educator

Description

U-Turn is a Peer Education service for young people (12 – 18 years old) across South Lanarkshire. The service is provided by Glasgow Council on Alcohol (GCA) on behalf of South Lanarkshire Alcohol and Drugs Partnership.
Peer Educators will be supported to deliver inputs across South Lanarkshire to other young people to incorporate a harm reduction approach as well as addressing stigma/language around drug and alcohol use.
Peer Educators are will work alongside the Peer Education Workers & Peer Education Team Leader.

As a Peer Educator, you will:
• Attend training related to Peer Education role
• Work as part of a team to achieve a common goal
• Support delivery of Harm Reduction
• Work towards a qualification
• Attend Personal Development Planning Responsibilities
• Participating in weekly workshops

There will be no skills required to volunteer with U-Turn but we ask that young people can commit 4 per month after their induction and training period is over.

Organisation aims and objectives

U-turn is a Peer Education Service which focuses on training young people (12-18 years) to become peer educators, providing early intervention and prevention for young people looking to address stigma and reduce harm caused by alcohol and drugs within their local community. Peer educators receive 1:1 support, attend weekly group sessions to build their confidence and leadership skills. They can gain qualifications, skills and expertise. U-Turn is commissioned by the South Lanarkshire Alcohol & Drugs Partnership. Groups run in Hamilton, East Kilbride, Clydesdale, Cambuslang and Rutherglen.

Restrictions

No Gender Restriction, Only commissioned by South Lanarkshire Alcohol and Drugs partnership to work with young people from South Lanarkshire.

Support

Expenses details: Expenses for volunteers are currently not covered by the commissioning. We will support young people to access their free bus travel through National Entitlement and have provisions in place for welfare and travel where necessary.
Training details: All volunteers will undertake an induction training with the Peer Education Worker, or Peer Education Team Leader. The service will provide induction and training to support all young people to develop skills for our volunteering role.

Are you care experienced yourself or working towards a career in social care? Do you want to gain valuable experience, make a positive change, be part of a likeminded community all whilst having fun? Our mentees are looking for a person to build and grow a positive relationship, try new activities, tackle isolation, build confidence and have fun in the community! We provide in person training, ongoing support and a community of mentors who are there to share experiences. We are there to support you every step of the way! Our service covers all of Glasgow and North Lanarkshire, having a car is desirable but not essential. *This role requires 2 days of training in house and subject to PVG check*

STEM Ambassadors volunteer to inspire the next generation and help young people to develop the skills, confidence and mindset to build successful futures in STEM. All STEM Ambassadors undergo a PVG Disclosure check and undertake online induction training before being authorised to work with young people. The programme is funded through the UK Government, with SSERC being the local Scottish delivery partner. SSERC will provide you with regular updates, training sessions and networking opportunities to keep your knowledge up to date and relevant for working in schools and community groups.
