The Agnes Hunter Trust SCIO is an independent charitable trust based in Edinburgh. They offer grants to registered charities in Scotland that specifically support disabled people. With an annual grants budget of around £550,000/yr, the Trust assists charities’ service delivery and core costs, and strive towards open and trusting grant-giving practice. In order to maintain our range of relevant skills and experience at Trustee-level, they are seeking a committed individual with direct working knowledge of the third sector to join the Board. As a funder, they wish to appoint a Trustee who understands the challenges facing the charities we support – perhaps someone working as a service provider and/or an individual with direct or indirect lived experience of disability. Sound knowledge of charity governance would also be advantageous, however previous Board/ Trustee experience is not essential and we welcome applications from all ages and backgrounds. Training and mentoring can be provided. The current Board of 7 members meets in Edinburgh 4-5 times per year for half-day sessions, plus other ad-hoc meetings online or in-person. The initial tenure is for 5 years, renewable for a further 3 years. The position is voluntary but reasonable expenses are reimbursed. A listening Ear provides a befriending service to people who are isolated or lonely, offering friendship, signposting, information and referral to other appropriate agencies. A Listening Ear is an open access service serving the communities of Dumfries and Galloway. As a Charity Trustee you have an important and valuable role to play in governing our work, in accordance with the Constitution and Strategic Plan, and in consultation with our members and wider community. Trustees will be responsible for overseeing the governance, effective management, strategic development and fulfilment of ALE’s vision and mission; ensuring compliance with the Constitution, contracts, charity policies and all relevant legislation; acting in the interests of ALE and promoting its success at all times. The Board of Trustees are responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, developing the charity’s aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the governing document, legal and regulatory guidelines. While all Trustees always retain their responsibility for the Charity as a whole, some will be chosen for their specific expertise in particular areas and will support and advise the Board on that area of expertise. -Main Responsibilities: • Work together to provide leadership and strategic direction to the charity • Ensure that M4U meets its charitable objectives as laid out in the constitution • Ensure that M4U is effectively run and meets all of its legal and regulatory requirements • Ensure that assets are safeguarded and used efficiently for those for whom the charity exists • Ensure that the charity is accountable financially and in other ways • Take on specific roles as required for the smooth operation of the Board of Trustees and charity • To maintain absolute confidentiality about all sensitive/confidential information received in the course of trustee’s responsibilities to the charity. • Act in the best interest of the charity, beneficiaries and future beneficiaries at all times • Promote and develop the charity in order for it to grow and maintain its relevance to society -Commitment: Trustees are expected to contribute around 10 hours per month to the charity and to attend 6 Board Meetings per annum. A minimum commitment of 12 months is requested. Trustees are expected to attend a minimum of 2 Workshops, 2 Performances and 2 Fundraising Events per annum. -Remuneration: This is a voluntary position, although reasonable travelling expenses can be refunded. -Accountable to: As the board are responsible and liable for the governance and functioning of the charity, they are accountable in varying degrees to a variety of stakeholders, including: service users, funders and OSCR. M4U depends on Trustees having a wide range of skills, and each Board member should have strengths in at least one of the following areas.
