Home 2 Hospital is a newly registered charity, set up by a group of volunteers, which is mirrored from three existing charities in different local areas. Our joint mission is to help cancer patients attend medical appointments on time and ease their stress by being chauffeured in comfort by our friendly and caring volunteers. Our service is easily accessible and completely free for all patients.
We need to build a team of 20 -25 volunteer drivers to support the anticipated demand for this service with the Larbert & Stenhousemuir community.
The client and the driver will agree what time to leave in order to arrive at the hospital on time. The driver will usually wait at the hospital until the client has received their treatment and once finished head straight home. This reduces stress as the client doesn't have to leave early to accomodate other patients or wait until everyone is finished before heading home. Travelling by car is more comfortable than a minibus and also reduces the infection risk for clients who may have a weakened immune system.
Drivers will be trained on the routes and parking places at hospitals.

Frequency and commitment details

Days and times will be agreed with the volunteers as these will vary dependant on the appointments.

Restrictions

Experience required: Must have a clean, UK driving licence and 2 years driving experience Access to a ULEZ compliant car (should diversions take you into the City Centre)
Travel details: Drivers will use their own cars, agree with the client pick-up times and be reimbursed for their mileage from their house to the hospital and back to their house.
Minimum age: 18

Training details: Drivers will be taken on the route, shown parking areas, given safeguarding training and have regular contact with the Lead Driver and Coordinator (as a minimum)

We are an award winning service who really work hard towards ensuring our service users with dementia have the best day possible. This starts at pick up. We are looking for 3 voluntary drivers who would be comfortable working with this client group. Any person interested would be a valuable member of our team and we would always ensure they were given the support required. We would also ensure the driver was introduced to a service user and possibly family before they started with pick ups. There may be occasions when we would need to use an escort. This would mean picking one of our carers up before travelling for a service user/s. A driver for us would get to know our carers very well and would always be welcome to stay on for a cuppa or a chat if they so wished. We are looking for drivers who would be available around 9.30am to pick up and transport to one of our venues. There would then be return journeys around 3pm although we do have a couple of mens groups (Tuesday and Thursday) when they are returning home at 3.30pm. If possible it would be great if a driver was available during the day however this would be preplanned (out for lunch). There may be multiple pick ups and drop offs on each day. Any driver would have to be PVG checked. Later in the year we will be looking to open a couple of evenings and weekends (wont be all day). This will be a new service which is much needed for the people with Dementia in the Falkirk area. There will be occasions when families will be in a position to transport however a voluntary driver would also be required. We do not have a start date for this as yet. We cover the Falkirk Area from Boness to Slamannan.

Thank you for your interest in our Driver Volunteer Role. Ayrshire Cancer Support has operated since 1982, providing emotional support and practical help to those affected by cancer in Ayrshire. Our Volunteers make a vital contribution, by enabling the continuation of the support we offer. Kind, Caring, Compassionate? If you have a full driving licence, have a 4 or 5 door car, and have some time to spare, you can make a real difference by transporting cancer patients within Ayrshire to and from various hospitals, locally and in Greater Glasgow for treatment. Our service users are required to attend appointments at a wide range of times, generally between 9.00am and 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. Our Driver Volunteers…  Enjoy interacting with people.  Are supportive, non-judgemental and accepting of others.  Provide warmth, sensitivity and a willingness to listen.  Display patience and understanding.  Understand the importance of confidentiality and providing a regular commitment.  Contribute to the valuable services provided by Ayrshire Cancer Support We ask our Drivers to…  Undertake training relevant to the role – which includes shadowing a Driver Volunteer.  Adhere to the policies and procedures of ACS.  Safely transport patients from their homes to hospital and back at pre-arranged times. No formal patient transport experience or skills are required, however, a valid Driving Licence held for a minimum of 5 years is essential. You will be eligible to claim expenses for associated mileage whilst volunteering when using your own vehicle, in line with current HMRC allowances.
