STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Ambassadors

The STEM Ambassador Programme is a nationwide scheme dedicated to getting more young people interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) subjects leading to an increase in young people pursuing STEM careers.

The most valuable tool young people have at their disposal when considering future career paths are the people around them, and we believe that STEM Ambassadors can be their greatest source of inspiration.

Do you work in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) industry? Do you have a passion for a particular STEM subject? Are you interested in passing this information onto young people?

If the answer is yes, become a STEM Ambassador! STEM Ambassadors are volunteers that aim to inspire young people to become interested in STEM subjects and consider a career in a STEM industry.

You could help run an experiment or design your own. You could mentor students in a variety of subjects or get involved in a careers event. You could help run an engineering project or design some fun maths games. You could set up a STEM club or run a tech evening at a brownie/cub group. There are lots of options!

If you have any queries please feel free to contact me at stemambassadors@asc.scot . Once you have registered, you will be required to attend an induction where you will complete a PVG – Protection of Vulnerable Groups scheme application along with meeting other new STEM Ambassadors. Experience required: STEM Ambassadors are volunteers with careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) or with a passion for STEM subjects.
Travel details: Aberdeen Science Centre is based at 179 Constitution Street, Aberdeen, AB24 5TU. Opportunities available across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

Online Tutor Volunteers

VTO provides free one to one tuition to children and young people (aged 8-18) to help tackle the attainment gap in Scotland. We work with young people from diverse backgrounds including those from low income families, care experience, EAL, or those faced with perceived barriers to learning. Respected and Safe Project Volunteers

-WHO ARE WE? Cybersafe Scotland is an Aberdeen based social enterprise working to protect children online. Our current focus is reducing online abuse and harassment. Cybersafe works with schools, including classroom-based sessions working directly with children, as well as work with school staff, parents and carers. -WHY DO WE NEED VOLUNTEERS? During the school year from August 2024-June 2025 we have a programme of work in school including lessons delivered to classes P5 - P7. All these sessions are delivered by Cybersafe Scotland staff but we are look for volunteers to support their delivery, bringing extra support for the learners, and joy and care in keeping with our mission. -MAIN TASKS: • Assist Cybersafe staff in classroom sessions: • Setting up for lessons • Distributing handouts • Helping with practical demonstrations • Encouraging pupils in small group or individual work • Tidying up after lesson • Bringing joy -TIME Lessons will take place within school hours between 0900-1500 Monday to Friday. The classroom based sessions are about 1 hour for each class including set up and tidy up time but multiple lessons will be delivered in a school in any one day. The more lessons a volunteer can commit to the better as you will learn valuable knowledge and skills through each lesson. However as a minimum volunteers must be able to offer 21 hours, split over half day periods of 3 hours. Please indicate availability when applying. -QUALIFICATIONS No formal qualifications are required, however volunteers will have to successfully apply for a PVG certificate for working with children. An interest in working with children and young people and demonstrable experience in doing so will be required. An interest in the online world and knowledge and awareness of apps and games will be an advantage though this is not essential. -HOW TO APPLY This is a fantastic opportunity to help and all volunteers make a real difference and are greatly appreciated. Home visiting volunteer

Home-Start Glasgow South is a family support charity based in Glasgow South. We work with families, with at least one child up to the age of 8, who are struggling to cope with the challenges of parenting along with sometimes difficult personal circumstances. Our volunteers visit families for 2-3 hours each week in their own home to provide practical and emotional support. If a family is isolated, they may need support to go to a local group. An overwhelmed parent may need help to organise the household or it could be that a mum or dad just need someone to talk to. A volunteer can make a big difference in a couple of hours a week. Volunteering in the family home can also include Perinatal Support (pregnancy -2 years) and English Tutoring. The support and friendship you can provide is invaluable and can help take away some of the stresses of day to day life, enabling parents to cope better with daily tasks and improve their confidence, giving their children the best possible start in life.
