The Museum of Communication aims to study, collect, preserve and exhibit items that tell the story of communication from the days of pre-electric telegraph to the latest state-of-the-art technology. The museum is run entirely by volunteers, and they are looking to grow their team with Visitor Guides.
As a Visitor Guide, you will speak with members of the public that come to the museum, guide them through and explain exhibitions, and answer any questions that they have about items in the museum. The museum has permanent exhibitions as well as new temporary exhibitions every summer. Visitors come from across Fife and beyond to see their collections and guides have the opportunity to speak to a wide range of visitors.
If you would like to gain experience in a museum environment and enjoy engaging with people and history, this is the perfect role for you.

Organisation aims and objectives

The MOC has existed formally since 1993. It uses its extensive collection to inform, educate and entertain the public about the exciting developments in communications technology which have given rise to the way of life we enjoy today. It has mounted many exhibitions including a major one at Saltire Court in Edinburgh. They currently have a museum site in Burntisland that is free for the community to access.

Volunteers are needed every Wednesday, and when exhibitions are running, Saturdays.

Restrictions

Experience required: Museum of Communication is looking for volunteers who are confident communicating with members of the public and willing to learn about the exhibitions within the museum.
Travel details: Museum of Communication, 131 High Street, Burntisland, KY3 9AA. The museum is approximately 300 metres from both the public car park and the railway station.
Minimum age: 16

Support

Taster available: Yes
Taster details: Volunteers are invited to visit the museum ahead of signing up to volunteer.
Training details: Volunteers will be given a full induction to the museum, and will be able to shadow an existing volunteer.

Heritage Visitor Guide

Kirkcaldy Old Kirk Trust is responsible for preserving and maintaining Kirkcaldy Old Kirk as a community venue, heritage centre and community music hub. The Trust is looking to grow their team with Visitor Guides. The Heritage Visitor Guide may show visitors round Kirkcaldy Old Kirk, conduct tours of the graveyard or act as an Exhibition Guide. Activities include learning about the history of the Old Kirk and sharing this with visitors. Guides may take visitors up the old tower to ring the bell, conduct “Stories on Stones” tours of the graveyard or show visitors the highlights of the Old Kirk, including the spectacular stained-glass windows. Alternatively, the volunteer may carry out research and help set up exhibitions and new heritage tours. There are also opportunities for volunteers with sewing skills to make costumes for “Living History” events if they wish.

Visitor Guide

You will be joinging our friendly team who run the Museum on a purly voluntary basis. The role involves weloming visitors to our Musuem; Explaining exhibits and talking about the local history of Dalbeattie and the surrounding area. Prior knowledge of this is not required as you will pick things up a long the way.

Hoswick Visitors Centre Volunteer

Volunteers taking up an opportunity to help in the Visitors Centre have a variety of activities to choose from: Welcome visitors including visitors from coaches. Do you have good local knowledge? Share it with visitors and advise on the visitors information resources. Help in the Café. Help provide an enjoyable experience for 12,000 visitors coming to the centre annually. Local people mingle with visitors, browsing the visitors' information or the Shetland crafts on sale and the displays of local heritage
