The Museum of Communication aims to study, collect, preserve and exhibit items that tell the story of communication from the days of pre-electric telegraph to the latest state-of-the-art technology. The museum is run entirely by volunteers, and they are looking to grow their team with Exhibition Volunteers.
As an Exhibition Volunteer, you can get involved with designing exhibitions, coming up with ideas for new exhibitions and the items included; running exhibitions; cataloguing and photographing collections; and documenting items and their origins. The museum has permanent collections as well as new temporary exhibitions every summer. Visitors come from across Fife and beyond to see their collections and the museum team is always happy to hear new ideas to engage their visitors.
If you would like to gain experience in a museum environment and have an interest in communications and history, this is the perfect role for you.

Organisation aims and objectives

The MOC has existed formally since 1993. It uses its extensive collection to inform, educate and entertain the public about the exciting developments in communications technology which have given rise to the way of life we enjoy today. It has mounted many exhibitions including a major one at Saltire Court in Edinburgh. They currently have a museum site in Burntisland that is free for the community to access.

Restrictions

Experience required: Museum of Communication is looking for volunteers with an interest in communications and exhibition design and running. No previous experience is needed.
Travel details: Museum of Communication, 131 High Street, Burntisland, KY3 9AA. The museum is approximately 300 metres from both the public car park and the railway station.
Minimum age: 16

Support

Taster available: Yes
Taster details: Volunteers are invited to visit the museum ahead of signing up to volunteer.
Training details: Volunteers will be given a full induction to the museum, and will be able to shadow an existing volunteer.

Exhibition Volunteer Set Up

Setting up can involve painting plinths, helping move artworks, preparing the galleries before the launch, and other tasks. You will join a friendly team of exhibition organisers (volunteers and staff). Full guidance will be given, and there is usually a range of different things to do. Days are varied, they can be busy or quiet. Lunch is provided. You can be reimbursed travel expenses from/to Summerhall from within the Lothians.

Museum Helper

We are looking for enthusiastic and friendly volunteers who can regularly give us four hours of their time per fortnight. We are currently open 2 days a week from 11am to 3pm and are hoping to increase our opening hours in the near future.
