Food Train is an award winning charity providing services to older people who are no longer able to manage independently, through age, ill health, frailty or disability. The Connects service offers a volunteer matching service for grocery shopping, telephone befriending and meal delivery.

Help to combat feelings of loneliness, isolation and malnutrition amongst older people (55+) by becoming a Volunteer Cook. You do not need to be a Jamie or Nigella to get involved – just the ability to prepare an extra portion of your meal once a week, to drop off with an older neighbour and have a light hearted blether with them. The role is fun, flexible and can be done at a time that suits you and your matched member!

*The Role:
· Paired with an older person to prepare an extra portion of your home cooked meal and deliver it to them at their home.
· Have a wee chat, agree times and dates for the next meal and serve up/help put the meal away as required.
· To report back to Food Train Connects team and complete all required documentation after each visit.
· To report any matters of concern to Food Train staff
· To inform Food Train Staff of any accidents, incidents or complaints
· To maintain confidentiality
· To represent Food Train in a professional manner to customers and the wider community

Organisation aims and objectives

Food Train is a registered charity, voluntary organisation and social enterprise. Since 1995 Food Train has been making daily life easier for older people, providing vital services to those who are no longer able to manage independently, through age, ill health, frailty or disability. Food Train makes hundreds of grocery deliveries every week, with the help of dedicated local volunteers, ensuring those most in need have access to fresh groceries.

Frequency and commitment details

This is a once weekly role however, we are also seeking volunteers who are available less frequently, willing to act as stand-in for regular volunteers. You would be called upon to cover holidays, illness or unexpected change in circumstances.

Restrictions

Experience required: There are no formal educational requirements for this role however knowledge of the needs of older people acquired through life and family experiences, training received or practice based experience is desirable. Friendly, sociable and patient with a caring manner. Good telephone manner and willingness to use own phone and online device to complete online forms. Responsive, flexible and efficient. Good verbal communication skills are required as well
Travel details: Private transport or access to suitable public transport required for delivering meals to member's home. Although some members may be within walking distance, this is often not the case.
Minimum age: 16

Support

Training details: Excellent support and training is provided to all volunteers. Induction training, role specific training and ongoing training plus support from a named member of staff.
