Alford Valley Community Railway is a charming and much loved narrow-gauge railway operated entirely by dedicated volunteers. We rely on the hard work and dedication of our volunteers to keep everything running smoothly. As an Additional Support Needs Advisor volunteer, you'll play a crucial role in ensuring all our visitors, regardless of their needs, have a safe, enjoyable, and memorable journey. About the Role: This is a unique opportunity to utilise your empathy, communication skills, and knowledge of additional support needs to make a positive impact on our volunteers and passengers' experience. You'll work closely with individuals and families requiring additional support, providing guidance and assistance. Key Responsibilities: • Approachable first point of contact on all ASN enquiries to the Board. • Proactively identify and understand the individual needs of volunteers/passengers, utilising your knowledge and experience. • Provide clear and concise advice about the railway, accessibility features, and journey procedures. • Liaise with the Board and other volunteers to ensure coordinated and seamless support. • Provide feedback and suggestions on improving accessibility and inclusivity at the railway. • Maintain current skills on disability awareness, communication techniques, and specific needs management. Skills and Qualities: • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a friendly, patient, and understanding demeanour. • Deep empathy and awareness of various additional support needs, including physical, sensory, and cognitive differences. • Ability to provide clear and concise information in accessible formats. • Resourcefulness and problem-solving skills to adapt to different situations and needs. • Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills. • Commitment to inclusivity and creating a welcoming environment for all.

Organisation aims and objectives

To operate a community run narrow gauge railway attraction and to enable local people and visitors to explore the rural and agricultural history of the Howe of Alford. Our visitors will be engaged, entertained and educated by the history of the original railway as well as future technological developments. This community run asset will support the economical sustainability of the village, recognising the need to evolve towards a climate friendly operation and embracing that message within an all-inclusive volunteering and visitor opportunity.
