Fundraising Team Member (Orkney)

Assisting your local fundraising group in organising, promoting, and taking part in a variety of activities to raise money for Guide Dogs. It costs £58,000 to support one single guide dog throughout its life, so without our amazing Fundraisers raising money for us, we would not be able to provide our life changing services! Did you know that we do not just provide life-changing guide dogs, we also provide advice, skills, emotional and practical support for children, adults and their families living with sight loss to help them live actively, independently, and well?

Key activities:
• Helping on stalls at local events.
• Taking Collection Boxes to local businesses.
• Manning collections at various venues.
• Attending local events organised by the team and keeping track of what we sell on our stalls (including the cuddly toys!)
• Counting donations.
• Supporting a group of like-minded people planning events and raising money.

What could a volunteer gain from the experience?
• The satisfaction in knowing you are supporting people with sight loss to live actively, independently, and well.
• An opportunity to build experience in communication and people skills.
• An opportunity to interact with others, including people with Guide Dogs and members of the public.

Organisation aims and objectives

We provide mobility and freedom to blind and partially sighted people. We also campaign for the rights of people with visual impairment, educate the public about eye care and fund eye disease research. There are over 4,950 guide dog owners in the UK. If you are blind or partially sighted, a guide dog could change your life. Find out how we can help you get out and about. My Guide aims to support blind and partially sighted people to get out and about with a sighted guide volunteer and do the things they want to do. We offer a range of services and activities for children and young people and provide valuable advice for parents and teachers.

Restrictions

Experience required: • Good communication skills. • Personable and able to work as part of a team. • Be willing to talk to people about the life changing services Guide Dogs provide.
Minimum age: 18

Support

Training details: Volunteering is a two-way street, so in return for your time you will get a dedicated volunteer manager/key contact who will help you settle in and support you during your time with us. The role requires 1 hour of training.

Key responsibilities: * Identifying and placing collecting boxes in suitable locations * Talking to the shop owner, receptionist etc at the location about how the boxes will help Guide Dogs and what we do * Emptying boxes every 3-6 months (as they get full) and banking the income through the paying in book provided. Give a receipt and letter of thanks to the hosts * Keeping a written record of the location of all boxes for your supervisor, the dates they are emptied and the dates/ amounts banked * If boxes aren’t collecting much, you’ll decide to move them to a better location. Your supervisor may also ask you to remove boxes * Reporting any stolen boxes to the local mobility team Please contact VolunteerScotNI@guidedogs.org.uk for more information.
