Volunteers we need you, with you inspiration and motivation to serve as a board member on the Management Board of HALLA (Harlaw Area Lifelong Learning Association). We are a Board of people who run daytime and evening classes at Kaimhill Learning Centre. We have a FB page ( @HALLACommunity) where you can see some of our activities and tutored classes. We meet once a month to discuss new opportunities and management issues, to find new ways of how-to bring people of all ages in the local community into the centre. We have several weekly, social, informal learning groups where Board members can get to know each other and form a friendly working relationship. A volunteer should be passionate, enthusiastic and have a keen interest in community matters. A volunteer does not necessarily require specific skills since we all support each other to develop new skills but if you have specific ones, it would be good to introduce them to the rest of the Board so we can use them to benefit the local community. The Board would appreciate people with knowledge of IT and office procedures but enthusiasm and interest in the community are equally important. This is an amazing opportunity to discover your “hidden talents” !!! You are very welcome to attend a committee meeting and see if this is for you. Overview of the Tech volunteer role All across the UK our 350+ volunteers support older and/or disabled people in their communities to offer one-to-one support with their technology, whether that’s a computer, laptop, smartphone or tablet. Our volunteers: • Troubleshoot technical issues • Offer impartial advice on technology • Set up new tech and install hardware and software • Show people how to use their tech at home e.g. shop online, send and receive emails and video call with family and friends • Make adaptations to support a disabled person’s specific technology needs What will I be doing? • Contacting clients to arrange a date/time to support (could include, home visits, meetings in libraries, cafes etc. supporting them remotely online or attending group sessions). • Carrying out tech support for the clients you have accepted. • Feeding back on progress via our online ticketing system. • Supporting your local Coordinator with promoting the volunteer service in the local area. • Getting together with other tech volunteers at team meetings and wider company events. • Attending training on technology, particularly adaptive technology. • Supporting other volunteers through our online chat facility What are the benefits to me? They trouble shoot technical issues, offer impartial advice on technology, set up new tech and install hardware and software, show people how to use their tech at home e.g. shop online, send and receive emails and video call with family and friends and make adaptations to support a disabled person’s specific technology needs. Each area has a volunteer Coordinator at the helm, managing the balance of client requests and volunteer resource to ensure each client’s IT needs are met in a timely and effective manner. What will I be doing? • Creating local awareness by publicising the service to, for example, disability charity organisations, libraries, community centres etc. this could include making phone calls, popping in to introduce yourself and the service, or presenting/attending events or meetings. • Using our online ticketing system to allocate and manage client requests within our Service Level Aims. • Communicating with clients to provide updates on volunteer availability and any issues or delays to their ticket resolution. • Reviewing monthly figures and trends and react appropriately with promotions and recruitment to fill gaps in service. • Contacting, interviewing and feeding back on potential volunteers. • Supporting and motivating your local volunteer team through team meetings and regular contact. • Attending ad-hoc company events or meetings. • Approving volunteers’ expenses. • Undertaking client IT support (if you also wish to be a Tech volunteer). An exciting opportunity has arisen for an individual who is competent with all social media – website, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook - to join our charity on a voluntary basis. We are a local charity offering housing advice and advocacy to vulnerable/disabled individuals and managed by a committee of local people.
