Volunteer Buddies

Description

ADA-Alcohol & Drugs Action have opportunities for Volunteer Buddies to support people who require this service in their recovery journey.

People who have had problems with substance abuse often say they can lose touch with friends and colleagues, as well as losing their confidence in social situations. Buddies aim to help people build up their confidence again by supporting the person to get out and about to rediscover old interests or find new ones.

Once trained, our Buddies are matched with an appropriate client and alongside the Drugs Worker; they will jointly agree a plan which will enable the Buddy to support the client in their recovery. The specific plan agreed will be led by the needs of each individual client and could typically include the Buddy accompanying the client to social events, leisure activities or to appointments with other organisations.

As well as Volunteer Buddies we also have a range of other volunteer opportunities such as Volunteer Complementary Therapists, Creative Group Volunteers, Mini Bus Driver, Volunteer Gardener and Volunteer Music Group Assistant.

Experience required: Commitment to the aims of ADA-Alcohol and Drugs Action.

Expenses details: Public transport of all day ticket will be reimbursed upon production of valid ticket for the day of volunteering.
Training details: Good support and relevant training is provided to all volunteers. Includes two hour Induction course, on-going support and supervision.

Want to get out to more gigs? Gig Buddies with Thera Trust pairs volunteers to adults with a learning disability based on the gigs you both love going to! This can be music, theatre, sport, or just going for coffee. It’s whatever your ‘gig’ is! Gig Buddies pairs get out together once a month to get to know each other and enjoy their shared passion together. You’ll also communicate regularly and plan your events together. The role requires roughly 4-6 hours per month, having a chat and getting out! Volunteer expenses are paid and we have relationships with a number of venues/event organisers that offer loads of great opportunities to our pairings, including DF Concerts, King Tuts, The Edinburgh Fringe and International Festivals, The RSNO, National Theatre Scotland, Sneaky Pete’s and more!

Volunteer Digital Buddies

"Do you have the time, patience and empathy to help a learner get to grips with digital technology to help them live more independently whilst maintaining social connections? Please read on… Digital Buddies (DigiBuds) meet with learners and support them to develop their digital skills initially through six 1-hour sessions and then in small groups. Everyone is different, so you may support a learner with everything they need quite easily whereas others might require more support to grasp the basics, so you’ll need to spend a little time repeating what you’ve gone over, checking understanding and coaching them through each step. The digital buddy role is a great support for our service users, recent figures by Connecting Scotland show that when people engaged in digital training: • 86% of respondents reported an improvement in their ability to stay in touch with each other. • 83% of respondents reported an improvement in being able to find interests. • 74% reported an improvement in their mental health. You don’t need to be an expert in technology or tutoring, but as long as you have the willingness to help, are patient and have confidence in your own digital skills, you’ll be a great Digital Buddy! Being fond of a chat is also helpful too, as this will help you build a rapport with your learner and find some common ground to start from. Brew buddies volunteer - Kindness Krew

Brew Buddies volunteer opportunity offers support to those experiencing loneliness and isolation. Our volunteers visit beneficiaries in their homes, building companionship and confidence, helping them attend social groups to form new friendships. Volunteers will accompany beneficiaries to these social gatherings until they feel comfortable attending on their own.

Mentor - Midlothian

"Grandmentors" is an award winning inter-generational mentoring programme, matching volunteer mentors who have a range of life skills and experiences, with young people aged 16-26 who are care experienced or who have "adverse childhood experiences". Grandmentors has now launched in Midlothian in 2023, for the first time! Our volunteer mentors help young people navigate the transition to independence into adulthood, by guiding them through life skills such as managing finances, accessing employment, education and training, and supporting their health and wellbeing. This opportunity is for volunteers (normally aged 50+) who have life experience and skills to offer. However, if you are younger than 50 and feel you could offer valuable support, please do apply or contact us to discuss further. It is important that you have good people skills, communication skills, patience, and can offer a regular commitment of a few hours per week (weekly or fortnightly). This role requires a PVG check which we will process for you after you apply to become a mentor. We provide our volunteers with comprehensive induction training, all on-going support, volunteer expenses and lots of other great benefits including the chance to make a difference to a young adult in need.
