Volunteer Digital Buddies

"Do you have the time, patience and empathy to help a learner get to grips with digital technology to help them live more independently whilst maintaining social connections? Please read on…

Digital Buddies (DigiBuds) meet with learners and support them to develop their digital skills initially through six 1-hour sessions and then in small groups. Everyone is different, so you may support a learner with everything they need quite easily whereas others might require more support to grasp the basics, so you’ll need to spend a little time repeating what you’ve gone over, checking understanding and coaching them through each step.

The digital buddy role is a great support for our service users, recent figures by Connecting Scotland show that when people engaged in digital training:
• 86% of respondents reported an improvement in their ability to stay in touch with each other.
• 83% of respondents reported an improvement in being able to find interests.
• 74% reported an improvement in their mental health.

You don’t need to be an expert in technology or tutoring, but as long as you have the willingness to help, are patient and have confidence in your own digital skills, you’ll be a great Digital Buddy! Being fond of a chat is also helpful too, as this will help you build a rapport with your learner and find some common ground to start from. Other qualities we look for include:

• A willingness to learn news skills and concepts

Organisation aims and objectives

The aims of CLASP are the relief of poverty and advancement of education. The charity’s objectives are: To develop a community managed and run sustainable project in the Stevenston area but serving the North Ayrshire area. To encourage a more empowered, informed and socially active community through community capacity building and active citizenship training and activities. To support and facilitate individual and group activity on issues relating to social inclusion. To provide a local base for information, advice, assistance and resources on issues such as poverty, health, unemployment, money advice, literacies and local training opportunities in partnership with other voluntary and statutory organisations. To recruit and train local volunteers in the above activities offering, where possible, recognised accredited opportunities in partnership with training and education providers. Tech/Digital Support Volunteer Coordinator

All across the UK our 350+ volunteers support older and/or disabled people at home to offer one-to-one support with their technology, whether that’s a computer, laptop, smartphone or tablet. They trouble shoot technical issues, offer impartial advice on technology, set up new tech and install hardware and software, show people how to use their tech at home e.g. shop online, send and receive emails and video call with family and friends and make adaptations to support a disabled person’s specific technology needs. Each area has a volunteer Coordinator at the helm, managing the balance of client requests and volunteer resource to ensure each client’s IT needs are met in a timely and effective manner. What will I be doing? • Creating local awareness by publicising the service to, for example, disability charity organisations, libraries, community centres etc. this could include making phone calls, popping in to introduce yourself and the service, or presenting/attending events or meetings. • Using our online ticketing system to allocate and manage client requests within our Service Level Aims. • Communicating with clients to provide updates on volunteer availability and any issues or delays to their ticket resolution. • Reviewing monthly figures and trends and react appropriately with promotions and recruitment to fill gaps in service. • Contacting, interviewing and feeding back on potential volunteers. • Supporting and motivating your local volunteer team through team meetings and regular contact. • Attending ad-hoc company events or meetings. • Approving volunteers’ expenses. • Undertaking client IT support (if you also wish to be a Tech volunteer). IT Support Volunteers

“A digital world accessible to all” Award winning IT charity AbilityNet is looking for IT Support volunteers to help people get the most out of technology. We support older and disabled people to use technology, from setting up a new device, to showing how to use zoom or do an internet food shop. The role would take place in your local area, face to face with clients or help over Teamviewer. You don’t need to be a tech guru to help out. If you use a computer at home or work, and perhaps support family and friends with their tech issues, you are likely to have the skills we are looking for. Relevant guidance and excellent support is provided to all volunteers. A fantastic opportunity to help and make a real difference for people. All volunteer assistance is greatly appreciated.
