Human contact is vital. As we are all finding out, without it, life changes.
Community Alcohol Related Damages Service is a befriending service run by Rowan Alba. Health care specialists, GP’s, hospitals and mental health services refer individuals to our service. These people, for various reasons have been living the way we experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of them for most of their lives. We need to recruit and train volunteers now so we can respond to those that have been referred to us during this time.

Organisation aims and objectives

Rowan Alba is a charity set up to work with people who are at risk of becoming homeless. We believe that all individuals have the right to be treated with dignity and respect, and offer support in a person centred way, with the individual actively involved in planning their care. We work with older homeless men and women in our supported accommodation and individuals in the community who are having difficulty sustaining their current accommodation. Many of our service users would benefit from more social contact and just having someone to talk to could make a big difference to them.

2 hours per week for at least 6-9 months. We ask that you prepare to spend the first two months joining the team and doing the necessary admin including your application to join the PVG scheme. Only after this would you be introduced to someone and start to form a befriending relationship.

Restrictions

Experience required: To understand or have compassion towards those individuals who have had a difficult relationship with alcohol now or in the past. Being able to listen without judgement and understand the benefit of human contact and connection.
Travel details: Our head office is situated at Fountainbridge; however we are operating from home with limited meetings as a team in different locations. Your induction process will take place online and then you will begin the in person double visits with our excellent team of experienced staff. You will be required to travel to and from your appointments which will be in the individuals own home or in a local café or community setting within Edinburgh.

Expenses paid: Yes
Expenses details: Travel and refreshments will be reimbursed. Email or hand in an expenses form and paid on the 20th of each month. Arrangements can be made to support with advance payments if this is helpful or would otherwise prevent you from volunteering.
Training details: Induction training takes place via Zoom with other volunteer recruits and experienced staff members. Lots of information will be provided in interview with service staff. Shadow visits with key staff to do introductions and support along the way to understand and widen knowledge of basic induction training. One to one Support & Check Ins take place with a designated staff member every 6 months and volunteers have the opportunity to attend monthly Group Support & Supervisions tied in with different training themes. "Grandmentors" is an award winning inter-generational mentoring programme, matching volunteer mentors who have a range of life skills and experiences, with young people aged 16-26 who are care experienced or who have "adverse childhood experiences". Volunteer Mentor (Edinburgh)

Would you like to make a difference to New Scots families in your community? Would you like to help tackle Child Poverty? We have the right opportunity for you! Volunteering Matters is now recruiting volunteer mentors to help build resilience and aspirations to move parents towards and enter employment. While our staff will be on hand to help you provide employability specific support to parents, your role as a mentor will be focused on developing additional skills and overcoming personal barriers to facilitate their entry into the job market. More specifically, you might be supporting your mentee with confidence building, public speaking, time management, social skills, proactiveness, future plans and aspirations, accessing further education courses or work placements, additional services or local groups. No previous experience or knowledge required, just a willingness to make a difference to families in your community. We especially welcome applications from mentors that have direct or indirect lived experience of any of the mentioned barriers and struggles and feel ready to provide friendly guidance to someone who is on their employment journey. You will be ideally a flexible, patient and reliable individual with strong people skills. Before you start, we will invite you to attend training, aimed at providing you with all the necessary tools and knowledge to carry out your mentoring role safely and knowingly. You will also have multiple opportunities to meet with the mentor project worker in 1:1 meetings and go through any questions or doubts you may have before you start.

Mentor - West Lothian

Give the gift of an hour a week, by becoming a Mentor to a Young Person aged 14-25 in West Lothian. It could be life changing for you both! Would you like to support a young person on their journey to gaining new skills and experience, becoming more self-confident and achieving their goals? If the answer is yes, we would love to hear from you. Why mentoring? Mentoring is at the heart of what we do here at ProjectScotland and we offer every young person we support, the opportunity to be matched with a volunteer mentor. We are searching for people in and around West Lothian who are able to offer one hour of their time once a week or fortnight for up to 12 months to help transform the life of someone else aged 14-25. The young people we work with all face different challenges in their lives such as poor school attendance, poor mental health, low confidence and self esteem, lack of employment opportunities, limited English skills or other life barriers and challenges. Some of the young people we support have been involved in negative behaviour. As a volunteer mentor, you could support your mentee with whatever is important to them. This could be: goal setting; identifying interests and strengths; confidence building; helping to establish a routine; support to explore job, training and further education opportunities; social connections; or just someone consistent to talk to and check in with to see how they are. The support you can offer is invaluable and can be life changing. How does it work? We will ask you to take part in our safe recruitment process, such as completing a PVG check, before we offer you some training which will prepare you and set you up to be a great mentor! After that, we offer lots of ongoing support, access to guides and resources, plus the chance to join our wonderful network of volunteer mentors across Edinburgh and the Lothians. You are "matched" to one young person and meet with them once a week or fortnight for around one hour . Volunteer Buddies

ADA-Alcohol & Drugs Action have opportunities for Volunteer Buddies to support people who require this service in their recovery journey. People who have had problems with substance abuse often say they can lose touch with friends and colleagues, as well as losing their confidence in social situations. Buddies aim to help people build up their confidence again by supporting the person to get out and about to rediscover old interests or find new ones. Once trained, our Buddies are matched with an appropriate client and alongside the Drugs Worker; they will jointly agree a plan which will enable the Buddy to support the client in their recovery. The specific plan agreed will be led by the needs of each individual client and could typically include the Buddy accompanying the client to social events, leisure activities or to appointments with other organisations. As well as Volunteer Buddies we also have a range of other volunteer opportunities such as Volunteer Complementary Therapists, Creative Group Volunteers, Mini Bus Driver, Volunteer Gardener and Volunteer Music Group Assistant.
