MCR Pathways is a multi-award-winning mentoring programme helping Scotland’s care-experienced and vulnerable young people achieve the same educational outcomes, career opportunities and life chances as all other young people.

At the core of the MCR Programme are 1 hour weekly in-school meetings between a young person and mentor, who listens and provides encouragement.

MCR Mentors come from all walks of life and commit to supporting a young person in school for a minimum of a year, ideally two. They are trained and supported by MCR throughout the mentoring relationship.

External research shows that MCR mentoring has made a significant and lasting impact on young people’s confidence and self-esteem, in addition to school staying-on rates, attainment and progression to positive destinations - college, university, and employment.

Organisation aims and objectives

MCR Pathways supports young people in or on the edges of the care system to realise their full potential. By providing relationship-based mentoring alongside employment and further & higher education experiences, young people are encouraged to discover and pursue their ambitions.

Restrictions

Experience required: No specific skills or experiences are required. Training will be completed in the onboarding process and support will be provided throughout the mentoring journey.
Travel details: In 1 of 8 Dundee secondary schools - Baldragon Academy, Braeview Academy, Craigie High School, Grove Academy, Harris Academy, Morgan Academy, St John's RC High School and St Paul's RC Academy.
Minimum age: 21

Mentor

TCA Youth Mentoring Service provides a mentoring support to vulnerable young people living within the boundaries of Dundee City. The target group are those young people who are affected by someone else's (parents, siblings, grandparents etc) substance use. The service recruits, trains, supports and supervises volunteer mentors who are then matched with individual young people. Mentoring matches are closely monitored and reviewed to ensure they remain purposeful. You must be able to commit 2-4 hours per week for at least 1 year. Volunteers will be supported by the Mentoring Coordinator and full training will be provided. Having your own transport would be beneficial but is not necessary.

We currently need support during the week on our mum and child sessions, these sessions are provided to help families connect and support one another. Your main role would be set up room, hosting and speaking to parents and tidying the room if you have small children than can be there whilst you volunteer

MCR Pathways works with its inspiring mentor community and partners to help young people realise their skills and progress towards positive destinations. Our vision is for all young people to experience equality of education outcomes, career opportunities and life chances, which we achieve through our school-based mentoring programme. Mentors meet with their young person for one hour each week in school, providing a consistent opportunity for the young person to focus on their future, discuss any concerns or simply share thoughts and experiences. A mentor serves as an added source of support -someone there to listen, encourage and help young people get the best out of school. This includes increasing their confidence, boosting qualifications, gaining meaningful experiences, and increasing their career options after school. We believe that every young person deserves a trusted adult for guidance and support. By becoming a volunteer mentor, you have the power to make a difference in the lives of young people. Together we can build a strong community of mentors, moving one step closer to our goal of ensuring that all young people have the support and encouragement they need to reach their full potential.

Volunteer Mentor (MSV Dundee)

MSV is a person-centred project, putting mentees at the heart of the match making process. The volunteer mentor role is fully supported by the MSV team, and the time commitment is very flexible, we ask for a minimum of 4 months commitment, but many mentoring relationships have gone on longer than this. This role will involve getting to know your mentee and the challenges they may face, discussing their future goals, building their confidence, sharing your own experiences or skills, and ultimately championing them to progress in life and work. MSV mentoring can take place face to face in/around the Dundee area, or remotely/online where necessary. Our volunteers do not need to have any specific career experience or qualification – just a positive and empathetic mindset and a passion for helping others to succeed. Some mentees are looking for a career-based match (working with someone who has experience of the area they want to pursue), whilst others are looking for more general support in identifying their goals, building their self-confidence or working through challenges they face with a new, objective perspective. Your personal outlook, life experiences or professional expertise could be exactly what a mentee is looking for in mentoring support – so please get in touch!
