Transition Support Worker

Description

Our pupils have a range of additional support needs and have the opportunity to spend their S6 year preparing for post-school transitions. They do this by attending college on a weekly basis or by undertaking work experience placements. We need volunteers to help support our pupils in this transition process. The volunteer would be expected to accompany a small group of pupils to college, support them whilst they engage with their lessons under the direction of the lecturer and offer support and encouragement where needed. For those pupils undertaking work placements the volunteer would be required to go with them and support them in the tasks they were set by the workplace, and again, offer support and encouragement.

This is a fantastic opportunity to directly support those who need that little bit more help. You will be at the forefront of helping prepare a young adult be successful after school, helping them to develop skills for a job with the ultimate goal of living an independent life. Not only will you get to build your own interpersonal and communication skills but you will also get the rewards of watching a person with additional support needs be presented with the idea of an inclusive life without limits. The time you spend with these young adults will have a direct impact on their lives, and, by enabling them to access these opportunities you will be promoting social responsibility and championing Inclusion and Diversity within our communities.

We are looking for enthusiastic, friendly and committed volunteers who can embed our school values of Respect, Equality, and Inclusion into their work for our pupils. You need to be calm under pressure and be able to build positive relationships with those you are working with.

College support shifts run from approximately 9.30am -2.30pm on a Monday and Friday, therefore require a 5 hour commitment per week for a 6 week block. Work experience shifts are more flexible in their time frame but will vary between work places but a commitment to remain with a pupil for a block of 6 weeks would be required, these shifts range between 3-5 hours

Online Tutor Volunteers

VTO provides free one to one tuition to children and young people (aged 8-18) to help tackle the attainment gap in Scotland. We work with young people from diverse backgrounds including those from low income families, care experience, EAL, or those faced with perceived barriers to learning. Our volunteers are responsible for developing a person-centred tutoring experience online. A key part of this role is relationship building, mentoring, instilling confidence, and empowering young people through education. Volunteers from a range of diverse backgrounds and experiences are welcome. What will I be doing? • Working one-to-one with a young person who requires tutoring support online. • Relationship-building and mentoring • Instilling a growth mindset towards learning • Monitoring and recording progress of learning and keeping in contact with your assigned Learning Communities Coordinator • Take part in relevant training • Tutoring in English, Maths and potentially other subjects, dependent on experience • Sourcing and creating engaging ways to support pupils’ skills and learning

Training & Employment Assistant

We are looking for volunteers to assist the Training and Employment Tutors in our East Kilbride centre and support our participants in personal development and employability training sessions. These sessions cover a wide variety of activities ranging from SQA certificated assessments to team games, creative tasks, lifeskills such as money management, drugs awareness etc. Depending on the programme, participants spend between 6 – 24 hours a week in the centre. Tasks would include reading, scribing, working 1-1 or helping small groups with activities. There is normally a maximum of 8 participants per group. Volunteers will be a valuable source of support for them to help build their communication skills, develop effective relationships and benefit from interacting with a positive role model. We are working with young people who have either recently left school or who are in the last 6 months of education but often not attending. All our participants require some form of support to help them make the transition from school to the world of work as they have various barriers. These include lack of attendance at school, lack of experience, low or no qualifications, health issues, hidden disabilities and particularly anxiety / poor mental health, lack of confidence and self-esteem. We are increasingly supporting young people with autism / aspergers . Some young people also require support with literacy / using IT.

Respected and Safe Project Volunteers

-WHO ARE WE? Cybersafe Scotland is an Aberdeen based social enterprise working to protect children online. Our current focus is reducing online abuse and harassment. Cybersafe works with schools, including classroom-based sessions working directly with children, as well as work with school staff, parents and carers. -WHY DO WE NEED VOLUNTEERS? During the school year from August 2024-June 2025 we have a programme of work in school including lessons delivered to classes P5 - P7. All these sessions are delivered by Cybersafe Scotland staff but we are look for volunteers to support their delivery, bringing extra support for the learners, and joy and care in keeping with our mission. -MAIN TASKS: • Assist Cybersafe staff in classroom sessions: • Setting up for lessons • Distributing handouts • Helping with practical demonstrations • Encouraging pupils in small group or individual work • Tidying up after lesson • Bringing joy -TIME Lessons will take place within school hours between 0900-1500 Monday to Friday. The classroom based sessions are about 1 hour for each class including set up and tidy up time but multiple lessons will be delivered in a school in any one day. The more lessons a volunteer can commit to the better as you will learn valuable knowledge and skills through each lesson. However as a minimum volunteers must be able to offer 21 hours, split over half day periods of 3 hours. Please indicate availability when applying. -QUALIFICATIONS No formal qualifications are required, however volunteers will have to successfully apply for a PVG certificate for working with children. An interest in working with children and young people and demonstrable experience in doing so will be required. An interest in the online world and knowledge and awareness of apps and games will be an advantage though this is not essential. -HOW TO APPLY This is a fantastic opportunity to help and all volunteers make a real difference and are greatly appreciated.
