Help others to become healthier and happier by leading our health walks. The walks are free, short and gentle, making it easier for people to become more active. Apart from taking people on a walk, walk leaders will welcome new walkers, give route information (where, how long/ how far, hazards), encourage some social activity and deal with a bit of paperwork. Optional activities are assisting with promoting the walks and planning and risk assessing new routes. It is up to individual volunteers to decide how much they want to commit, but to ensure some continuity we would ask that you consider your availability for leading walks before doing the health walk leader training day.

Research Volunteer(s)

Sport Aberdeen
Postcode: AB23 8DU
Regular walking has been shown to have a massive effect on people’s health and wellbeing. In and around the city of Aberdeen we have many groups who walk regularly and for a wide variety of distances/ time. To help promote the range of Walking Groups in Aberdeen, make it easier for people to locate a Walking Group and to expand the many benefits walking brings Sport Aberdeen has redesigned the walking section of their website to provide an opportunity to link all groups under a few headings/ pages such as: -Health Walks (30 – 60 min) -Other Short Walks (based on the Health Walk Model) -Medium Walks (2 – 5 miles) -Longer Walks (full day) To assist in this we have an exciting volunteer opportunity for a volunteer(s) to research/gather together information on walking groups across the city and collect standardised information to allow potential walkers to connect with a suitable (distance, duration, terrain) group. At the end of this project we will have a list of all the walking groups in the Aberdeen area, complete with contact details, allowing individuals to connect with a suitable walk. This is a fantastic volunteering role where you will make a real difference and all help is greatly appreciated. Session Volunteers for Climbing Programme

Urban Uprising (Aberdeen)
Postcode: AB24 5NN
Urban Uprising was launched in the UK in 2017 with the aim to improve the physical, social and emotional wellbeing of young people struggling to elevate themselves. Since then our programmes in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Bristol have reached hundreds of young people and seen their confidence, self-reliance and resilience grow alongside their climbing skills. Due to growing success, the team is now starting a new project in Aberdeen and recruiting Session Volunteers. This is a crucial role in the successful delivery of our unique climbing programme, with individuals being responsible for helping to run climbing sessions alongside qualified instructors, creating a consistent experience for groups and participants, and providing participants with a positive role model. It is a hugely rewarding role. Through a structured programme, you will help young people learn how to climb safely and responsibly, but also gain improved self-esteem, develop life and employment skills, find adventure and a sense of community. If you wish to be considered for the role, please complete the form accessed through the following link: bit.ly/UUvolunteer For more information or further details please contact Ben Campbell, Project Coordinator at email: ben@urbanuprising.org / tel.: 07754622448 / web: https://www.urbanuprising.org/support-us

Food & Fun Volunteers

Aberdeen City Council Food & Fun Programme
Postcode: AB10 1AB
Food and Fun was introduced by the Council as a pilot to deliver free meals and activities to children in key areas of Aberdeen during school holiday periods and has been rolled out on a permanent basis. Over Christmas, as an extension of the project, special events were hosted for young people to enjoy the festivities – from ice skating and crafts to a disco and visit to Santa. For everyone involved in Food and Fun there’s a busy period ahead. The main aim is to ensure children continue to be fed, recognising the importance of school meals during term time for a large number of families, and also to provide the opportunity to take part in physical activity in a nurturing environment. The initiative has been recognised with awards – but the reward and motivation for the many people who have put their heart and soul into developing the programme is in the positive impact there is on children, families and communities. When we talk about our purpose – about caring for our city and our people – we think Food and Fun is a shining example that we can all be incredibly proud of. Many participants obtain great life skills which has assisted them in securing other opportunities as well as the personal development and satisfaction that this also brings. All help makes a difference and is greatly appreciated. To volunteer / for more information please contact Martin Smith, Locality Inclusion Manager at E Mail: martinsmith@aberdeencity.gov.uk or Tel.: 01224 788538.

Volunteering Matters
Postcode: ML2 8JX
The North Lanarkshire Befriending Project help support vulnerable and isolated young people aged 8-18 in the local area. With social isolation, inequality and child poverty on the rise, the need for befrienders to support young people to increase their confidence, achieve personal goals and make links in their local community, is more important than ever. If you are passionate about the wellbeing of children and young people and could spend time with a young person sharing a hobby or activity on a fortnightly basis, then become a befriender in North Lanarkshire today! Once trained and matched to a young person with similar interests, the befriender and young person meet every fortnight to take part in an activity. For example, you could meet for a hot chocolate, nature walks, a gym class, bowling or the cinema. There may be particular activities that the young person would like to take part in but we also encourage volunteer befrienders to introduce ideas for new activities when appropriate. Befrienders will give a young person a positive role model in their life by passing on their skills and experience, enabling them to try new experiences and simply providing them with a few hours of fun. By committing to just a couple of hours every fortnight, you could make a real difference where it is needed the most. Volunteer requirements • Must commit to contact with young person at least once every 2 weeks for 12 months • Attend training, delivered in 3 x 3 hour blocks • Must apply to the PVG scheme (handled and paid for by the project) • Interest and enthusiasm in working with young people • Must be at least 18 years of age As a volunteer, you would have the satisfaction of helping a young person in need, increasing your own confidence, enhancing your skills and experience and having fun! (Stornoway) Walk Leaders

Paths to Health (Western Isles)
Postcode: HS1 2DG
It is recommended that we each take 10,000 steps a day to achieve a healthy, fit and active lifestyle. A brisk walk of only 30 minutes will provide more than 2,500 of those essential steps, or one quarter of our daily target. In doing so you will feel fitter and better, you will have more energy, you will sleep better, your blood pressure and stress levels will be reduced, and you will have an enjoyable break. Would you like to enjoy more of these benefits and help others to enjoy them? You could become a volunteer walk leader. You could either help us with our planned Stornoway lunchtime walks, or set up a walk group of your own in your own area, with the full help and support of the local Paths to health Co-ordinator. There will be a training day for any volunteers who are interested.
