Beach Wheelchair Volunteers

Sea the Change
Postcode: TD14 5QA
For many people, a simple outing to the beach is impossible. Volunteer, ‘be the change’ and help others relive fond memories or experience the joys of sand, sea and shore for the very first time! Our pool of volunteers are contacted when a booking is made to hire one of our beach wheelchairs and invited to help out. On the day of the hire, the volunteer on duty will collect the equipment required from the Sea the Change storage shed, taking it to meet the hirer at the appointed time next to the disabled parking bays by Coldingham beach. After demonstrating the features and safe use of the wheelchair and/or hoist, hirers will be left to carry on and enjoy their visit. Volunteers are NOT required to assist with transfers to and from wheelchairs or with using the hoist. At the end of the hire, the volunteer will clean equipment as necessary and wipe down surfaces with antibacterial solution before returning items to the storage shed. In the event of an emergency, the volunteer will contact the Project Officer for assistance.

Telephone Befriender (Outreach Team)

Sight Scotland and Sight Scotland Veterans
Postcode: IV30 1BU
Many blind and partially-sighted people are already quite isolated due to their visual impairment and the pandemic has only made things that much harder. However, a weekly phone call or a cup of tea with a volunteer befriender could help provide a vital social connection for veterans with sight loss. If you love a relaxed, friendly chat on the phone and if the idea of doing this whilst also making a genuine impact as a volunteer sounds too good to be true … read on. Our members tell us that their regular check-ins and chats or visits with someone at Sight Scotland Veterans are something they look forward to. Sometimes they can even be a lifeline. Just a simple phone call once a week can make the difference that helps one of our members overcome the effects of isolation and loneliness. We need a friendly and naturally chatty home-based volunteer who can check in regularly with our members by phone, take some time to make sure they are doing OK, and fill them in with all the latest gossip at Sight Scotland Veterans. You will never be cold calling, there’s no pressure and nothing to sell. We will only ask you to call signed-up Sight Scotland Veterans members who we know will be only too happy to hear from you. Some volunteers can also do face to face volunteering, as restrictions eased. As a volunteer, you will get to know inspiring people, gain valuable experiences, and help us to change the lives of those who have served their country. For more information please contact James Whyte, Volunteer Development Manager at email james.whyte@sightscotland.org.uk or tel.: 0131 446 3154.

Home Visitor / Buddy

Blind Veterans UK (Aberdeen)
Postcode: AB25 1DZ
Can you spare a few hours a week to brighten someone’s day? This is a great opportunity to provide crucial social interaction for a veteran, who can’t reach our centres, and can feel isolated or lonely. By popping by once a week or fortnight, a Home Visitor / Buddy is a friendly face that can make all the difference to our veterans. A visit could be a simple chat and a cup of tea, getting involved in shared interests for example playing dominos, or a game, listening to music, watching TV or discussing audio books. You will never be asked to do any personal care. Although you will be working in the community independently, your manager is only a phone call away and there is a network of other volunteers for you to link in with too. Volunteers must be over the age of 18 years and understand the importance of confidentiality and relationship boundaries. The role can be flexible around your other commitments, but we ask that you are reliable and punctual for our veterans. You will be fully trained and supported so you feel comfortable and confident in your volunteering. For more information please contact Gary Flew, Volunteer Coordinator at email: gary.flew@blindveterans.org.uk or tel.: 0751 493 1950.

Transport Assistants/Drivers

North East Sensory Services (Aberdeen Services)
Postcode: AB25 1BT
North East Sensory Services (NESS) requires volunteer Drivers/Transport Assistants to help elderly people, suffering from hearing or sight loss, access social groups and activities in Aberdeen City Centre. Groups meet all week but mostly on Tuesdays and volunteers would be required to either drive the organisation’s car or use their own vehicle, with all expenses covered. At NESS we are not just looking for people to drive cars – we want kind, happy, friendly people, willing to help a blind or deaf person in and out of a car. Volunteers will be asked to give a few hours per week (or more if they can manage) to collect service users from their homes around Aberdeen and take them to our headquarters in the city centre then return them home a few hours later. If you can help, please contact Debbie Robertson on 0345 2712345 or debbie.robertson@nesensoryservices.org

As a volunteer, you will get to know inspiring people, gain valuable experiences, and help us to change the lives of those who have served their country. For more information please contact James Whyte, Volunteer Development Manager at email james.whyte@sightscotland.org.uk or tel.: 0131 446 3154.

This is a great, enjoyable opportunity to help in the local community, make a positive difference and also the opportunity to develop new skills and interests as well. Volunteer Drivers

North East Sensory Services (Aberdeen Services)
Postcode: AB25 1BT
A North-east charity is seeking volunteer drivers to help support its life-enhancing services. NESS, which has been supporting visually impaired people in Aberdeen since 1879, holds a wide range of activities from discussion groups to smartphone classes. The regular activities enable elderly people who have difficulty seeing or hearing to take part in social events, make friends and feel more engaged in their community. Many NESS service users are socially isolated due to difficulty getting about and a fear of using public transport. The activities at NESS are often the only opportunity for many to get out of the house and meet people. However, due to increasing demand, the charity is in urgent need of volunteers who are willing to help NESS service users get to the activities. Volunteers can give anything from two to twenty hours, and full training and expenses are provided. Graham Senff, who has been volunteering as a driver for NESS for over a year commented: “I find it so rewarding when I see the enjoyment of the service users when they are picked up and dropped of at their door.” To find out more information, potential volunteers should contact Debbie Robertson or Sheila Ogden on debbie.robertson@nesensoryservices.org / tel.: 0345 2712345.

Hearing Aid Support Volunteer

Midlothian Council
Postcode: EH22 1AE
1 in 6 people in Scotland have a hearing impairment . You will know someone who has it, or may have hearing loss yourself. In Midlothian we have recently introduced the hearing aid battery pick up points in all our local libraries. This has been a huge success. It draws people into Libraries, to interact with staff and other members of the community and makes them aware of the wide range of activities which are on offer there. This saves time and money for people, reduces social isolation and eases pressure on the over-stretched staff in Audiology in Edinburgh. It means fewer hearing aids lie unused in drawers, for want of a battery. It really is a win, win. We now want to expand on this by offering repair and maintenance clinics locally too. The replacement of tubing in the hearing aid for example, is required every so often. It is not difficult to do, but it is a bit fiddly, especially for older or disabled people who are a large proportion of hearing aid users. Full training is provided prior to involvement. We have established a clinic which runs on the first Wednesday of every month in Dalkeith Library, 10.30-11.30 am. We also have now established a clinic in Penicuik Town Hall on the last Wednesday of every month 10:30 - 11:30am. If we can recruit more volunteers, we would like to start a clinic in Gorebridge, which would involve a similar monthly commitment. At present due to Covid-19 clinics are suspended but do get in touch if you are interested in this opportunity. Contact will then be made with volunteers once the clinics are re-opened.
