Volunteer Mentors

MCR Pathways (Aberdeen)
Postcode: AB10 1AB
MCR Pathways has been partnering with schools since 2007 so we know just how amazing the young people of Scotland are. However, sometimes due to situations out of their control, young people face challenges that make it more difficult for them to succeed. That’s why providing the simple support of a mentor is so important and has been proven to make a life-changing difference. This is where you can help... MCR recruits and trains volunteer mentors who are matched with a young person that shares similar interests, hobbies or career aspirations. Mentors meet with their young person at their school for just one hour per week and the difference this makes is transformational. The mentoring relationship is unique as young people establish a friendship with someone who’s there, just for them and is not a teacher, parent, guardian or counsellor. The impact on their life is huge. Recent ScotCen research shows 81.6% of mentored care-experienced pupils left school for college, university or a job, compared with 56.3% of those young people not being mentored. We are hoping to help even more young people in the area reach their potential and are looking for over 150 mentors from Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire In Aberdeen St Machar Academy has been part of the programme since August 2018 and, in 2020 was joined by Northfield, Hazlehead, Dyce, Harlaw and Lochside Academies. Aberdeenshire schools participating in the programme are Banff, Fraserburgh, Inverurie, Peterhead and The Gordons Schools Huntly The only qualification you need to be a mentor is the desire to help. All young people are different and have different needs, so it’s important that our mentors come from all walks of life. Volunteer mentors are asked to commit just one hour a week for a minimum of one year and will be fully trained and PVG checked before being matched with a young person from an Aberdeen or Aberdeenshire school. The building of the relationship with a young person is facilitated by our fantastic MCR Pathways Coordinators who are based in each school and work with our young people on a daily basis. We’re asking you to #BeTheBridge between a young person’s talent and life possibilities. For only one hour per week, you can change a life. This year, why not do something to make a difference that lasts a lifetime. Register online at https://mcrpathways.org/become-a-mentor/ For any further details please contact Heidi Bisset, Programme and Schools Manager- Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire at email: mentor.services@mcrpathways.org or tel: 07587104597

Family Support Volunteer

Volunteering Matters
Postcode: EH7 5JT
Volunteering Matters Overview At Volunteering Matters we believe everyone in the UK should have the opportunity to thrive, so we bring people together to overcome some of society’s most complex issues through the power of volunteering. We partner with communities to overcome adversity, tackling social isolation and loneliness, improving health, developing skills and opportunities. And because we’re a national charity, we do this at scale, sharing our expertise and building partnerships to make an even bigger impact. We turn local knowledge and energy into action and progress, building stronger communities and a better future for all. Project Overview Our Volunteers Supporting Families in Edinburgh project offers practical and emotional support to families across the South East and South West localities of Edinburgh, empowering them to face a range of life challenges. We recruit, train and match dedicated, local volunteers to help families every step of the way, spending 1-1 time together on a personalised set of goals chosen by the family, for the family. We can help in many ways, such as improved living standards, budgeting, healthier eating, better school life and behaviour, access to health and wellbeing aid, as well as introducing parents to community resources, to name a few. So far, thousands of families across the UK have benefitted from our service and we are now delighted to extend the programmes reach to families in Edinburgh. Who can volunteer with us? Our volunteers are locally based people with an understanding of the challenges that families are facing. Aged 18+, each volunteer brings different life experiences and skills that they can use to help the family they are matched to, offering support on a weekly basis, usually for 6-9 months at a time that suits everyone. They build a strong relationship based on trust and mutual respect, acting as a friendly face who listens and cares about the family. All volunteers are interviewed, trained to the highest standards and undergo disclosure checks before being matched with a family. What can we offer volunteers? As well as the sense of achievement that comes through supporting a family, our volunteers will have the opportunity to learn and develop new skills, attend social events with other volunteers and enhance their employability. Certificates are provided upon completion of induction training and at the end of the commitment, with project staff happy to provide references for future studies or employment.

STEM Ambassadors

Aberdeen Science Centre
Postcode: AB24 5TU
The STEM Ambassador Programme is a nationwide scheme dedicated to getting more young people interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) subjects leading to an increase in young people pursuing STEM careers. The most valuable tool young people have at their disposal when considering future career paths are the people around them, and we believe that STEM Ambassadors can be their greatest source of inspiration. Do you work in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) industry? Do you have a passion for a particular STEM subject? Are you interested in passing this information onto young people? If the answer is yes, become a STEM Ambassador! STEM Ambassadors are volunteers that aim to inspire young people to become interested in STEM subjects and consider a career in a STEM industry. You could help run an experiment or design your own. You could mentor students in a variety of subjects or get involved in a careers event. You could help run an engineering project or design some fun maths games. You could set up a STEM club or run a tech evening at a brownie/cub group. There are lots of options! If you are interested please register on the database db.stemnet.org.uk or check out the website www.aberdeensciencecentre.org/stem-ambassadors/ . If you have any queries please feel free to contact me at stemambassadors@asc.scot . Once you have registered, you will be required to attend an induction where you will complete a PVG – Protection of Vulnerable Groups scheme application along with meeting other new STEM Ambassadors. We hope to hear from you soon.

Gaelic speakers, tutors and translators

Lingo Flamingo
Postcode: G51 3UU
CALLING ALL GAELIC SPEAKERS, TUTORS AND ENTHUSIASTS! Lingo Flamingo are a vibrant social enterprise based in the Southside of Glasgow with a mission to share the joys of language learning far and wide. We offer engaging, light-hearted and interactive language classes to older adults in various locations across Scotland. All of what we do is inspired by research which shows that learning a language at any age can help slow cognitive decline. We believe wholeheartedly that it is never too late to learn! For our latest project, we are partnering with Glasgow City Council to teach Scottish Gaelic in day centres and care homes in Scotland. We are looking for individuals with Gaelic language skills to help with the various stages of this exciting new project! We are initially looking for individuals with interest in translation and/or tutoring to translate our pre-existing workbooks into Gaelic. This work would be done remotely, and would require applicants to have access to emails. A personal computer is desirable but not essential, as we would be able to provide a computer on loan. The translating role has a time commitment of around 1 hour a week over a 2 month period. Experience of translation work is not essential, and volunteers will be supported throughout by Lingo Flamingo's Learning Manager. As part of the second stage of the project, we are looking for people to teach small groups of adults using the newly designed workbooks. Teaching experience is helpful, but not essential, as we will provide comprehensive online teacher training. The tutoring time will require a time commitment of 1-2 hours per week, but with lots of flexibility according to your needs. Individuals are welcome to help with both roles outlined above, or whichever best suits their interests. We will provide training on our teaching methods and practices, as well as ongoing support and mentoring for both roles. If you have teaching experience, or experience translating and creating teaching resources, feel free to get in touch via or website, or directly on info@lingoflamingo.co.uk We're looking forward to hearing from you

Volunteer Patients

University of Aberdeen Patient Partner Programme
Postcode: AB25 2ZD
Patient Partners are members of the public who assist in the practice and learning sessions by being available to speak to and be examined by our students. There is no prior training or experiences necessary to be selected to join the Programme, all we ask is that a Patient Partner be willing to help, reliable and most importantly have a good sense of humour! Patient Partners may role play a health problem from a scenario (short description of symptoms and how they have been affecting you, as well as a social and medical history) so that medical and dental students can practise interviewing patients away from the hussle and bussle of a busy hospital ward. Patient Partners may also be used for non-invasive procedures/examinations (for example, the taking of a blood pressure, listening to a patient’s lungs or having joints examined/put through normal movements). There is no prior training or experiences necessary, all we ask is that you are willing to help, reliable and most importantly have a good sense of humour! Good support is provided to all volunteers and all help makes a difference and is greatly appreciated. For more details please contact us at Email: patientpp@abdn.ac.uk or Tel 01224 437887.
