Volunteer Trustees

Zero Waste Aberdeen
Postcode: AB11 5YU
We are a young democratically run organisation that needs to grow. At the moment we are a small group working at projects that reduce waste and we intend that Aberdeen and Shire become zero waste areas. That is, that everything we use becomes part of a circular economy and is not discarded needlessly to be tipped or burned. Currently, our main projects are :- *Go Green Café *Trash to Treasure *Men's Sheds *Planting Fruit Trees for Community Benefit These worthy projects are undertaken alongside family and work commitments but we need to do more if we are to make inroads to the waste we generate each day. That presents exciting opportunities for volunteers. Our next step then, is for more 'Trustees' to join with us to take on an officer of the board role, or to become an ordinary member and help steer the way forward to a successful reduction of waste to zero. If you’re/for more information then please do get in touch with Brian Allan at email brianaltenscc2@gmail.com or tel.: 07751275757.

Digitisation and Cataloguing Volunteer

Scottish Fisheries Museum Trust
Postcode: KY10 3AB
Do you have knowledge of boats or fishing? Or maybe you just have a good eye? If you have one of these and an internet connection, then we want you! The Scottish Fisheries Museum has launched a database for the public to access our photo collection online, but now we must catalogue what it is in each image. This role will involve working on our database to add descriptions and keywords to each photo to inform people about the photo subject and optimise searching. No specialist knowledge or experience is required as full training on our system will be provided, but experience of using databases is advantageous. Knowledge of the fishing industry would be useful. As this is a remote position, we can work to your schedule. The Scottish Fisheries Museum has been preserving Scottish fishing heritage for over 50 years. Join us in this task today!

Campaign & Lobbying Volunteers

Humane League UK (The)
Postcode: AB10 1TT
Making change for animals happens in many different ways. Protesting and public outreach is a powerful engagement tool, but sometimes we also need to combine this with talking directly to people in power - your local decision makers. As a Campaign & Lobbying Volunteer, you will combine these 2 campaigning tools to fight for legislative change. By building relationships with your local politicians, whilst also delivering outreach and awareness raising events locally, you will inspire your local MP to take action for the animals. And - you don't need to be an expert on politics. We will give you everything you need, and ultimately this about raising an issue to your MP as a concerned member of their constituency. It's their job to listen to you! If you envisage a world free from animal suffering, and you want to play your part in making history for animals, we'd love for you to join our volunteer community. As a Campaign & Lobbying Volunteer, you will take the lead on driving local action for our legislative campaigns. You will help animals in 2 key ways: 1. Lobbying your local politician(s): you will be building and maintaining a relationship with your local MP, talking to them about The Humane League UK's campaigns and encouraging them to take the steps we need to drive progress for animals. This will happen in many ways, including writing letters, sending emails, using social media, and sometimes even meeting them in person (or online) when this is strategically important. Through effective and persuasive communication, you will keep animal welfare firmly on their agendas. 2. In addition, you will have the opportunity to organise public outreach events in your area. These events will help to raise awareness of the issues facing animals in factory farms amongst other constituents in your area, helping to get the attention of your MP. These events may range from door-dropping information, delivering talks, or engaging with members of the public at street events. The more people in your area who know about the issues facing animals, the more pressure your local MP will receive to do the right thing. Your grassroots events can help us gain support of decision makers, and you can play your part in making history for animals. This role is remotely accessible and focused on local action near where you’re based. No prior experience is required, just a passion and drive to make a difference. There is no set time commitment, but roughly 4-6 hours a month is average for this role, depending on how involved you can be. A fantastic opportunity to help and make a real difference. For further details please contact Aimee May, Organising Administrator at email: amay@thehumaneleague.org.uk or tel.: 01273 569 057. If you’re interested in volunteering with The Humane League UK, but aren’t sure if the Campaign & Lobbying role is right for you, please check out our other volunteer opportunities on our website: https://thehumaneleague.org.uk/volunteer-with-us

Community Volunteer

Mary's Meals UK (Shetland)
Postcode: ZE1 0JP
Would you like the opportunity to support Mary’s Meals’ work to feed hungry children in some of the world’s poorest countries and help give them a brighter future? We’re looking for volunteers to join our global movement, to help raise awareness about Mary’s Meals and fundraise for our work. As a Community Volunteer you can contribute as an individual or become part of one of our local groups of passionate volunteers, helping to grow our movement by motivating and inspiring people in your local community to support our work. If you have a little time to spare, you enjoy meeting like-minded people, want to learn new skills and you’d like to help our amazing cause, then our Community Volunteer role is perfect for you! Volunteering is fulfilling and fun. By gifting your precious free time to Mary’s Meals, you can learn useful new skills, meet new people, and make a valuable contribution to our important work to reach more hungry children with life-changing meals in schools. We really need your help so we can keep our promise to the more than 1.8million children who rely on a nutritious daily meal at school from Mary’s Meals, especially as Covid-19 has hit many developing countries so hard. WHAT ARE MARY'S MEALS UK IN SHETLAND LOOKING FOR? We are looking for people who are passionate about ending child hunger and ensuring that every child receives a daily meal in a place of education. We have a range of activities that can be done from the comfort of your home, while Covid-19 restrictions are in place. They include: hosting virtual talks, spreading the word about our work on social media or holding screenings of our inspiring videos with family and friends. If you don’t mind public speaking, we can also train you to visit schools, Rotary Clubs and other local organisations to give talks virtually and generate support for our cause. As restrictions change across the UK, other key activities may include: • Sharing our story (in person) with local community organisations, schools, churches, and faith groups. • Organising fundraising events in your local area – such as coffee mornings, quizzes, and bucket collections. • Promoting Mary’s Meals’ fundraising campaigns in your community. • Distributing and displaying promotional materials and placing collection tins. • Helping to generate support from businesses in your local area. Our flexible volunteer roles allow you to raise awareness in your own community in whatever way you feel comfortable. All of our volunteer activities are tailored to suit your different skills and time constraints. This is a great opportunity to enhance your communication and/or event management skills, while also making a huge impact on the lives of some of the world’s poorest children. You can speak to your Mary’s Meals contact to discuss which elements of the role would be best suited to you. We have great opportunities to put your skills to good use, and we will provide training and support to help you in your role.

All are fantastic opportunities to make a real difference for people and communities in Aberdeen. Excellent support and relevant training is provided to all volunteers.
