The aim of this project is to improve the experiences of families and carers, following the bereavement of a loved one in Hospital, with all in-patient areas using dignified and respectful bags/boxes to return patients valuables and belongings to families and carers.
Normal practice within the NHS is to return belongings following the death of a patient in plastic patient belongings bags; this includes very personal belongings such as watches, jewellery, cards, and photographs. The items are returned in a plastic bag which is universally used as a bag to store and return patients clothes. This has been seen for a long time as a practice which is impersonal and lacks respect and shows no recognition that the person has been bereaved. Recent feedback from staff and reflection from a student nurse on placement echoed the thoughts of how impersonal this felt and did not express the empathy the staff felt for families and carers.

Wave Radio is a broadcasting service for the wellbeing of patients at Dr Gray’s Hospital -- and by broadcasting online, they aim to bring the community into the hospital and the hospital into the community.
This volunteering opportunity is also a great one if you have a love in music.
They are not just looking for people to present on air, but would also welcome people who have a bit of spare time to catalogue music or music production. For people interested in any of their presenter slots, please know these programmes can be pre-recorded for broadcast at a later time. Right now, volunteers can do their shows from home, through the studios at Dr. Grays. Volunteers who have an interest in specific musical genre (i.e./Classical, show tunes, soul etc. ) or have a wide musical taste can find out more about how to help with their breakfast, afternoon and early evening programmes.
Wave Radio is run entirely by volunteers and donations. Please get in touch if you would like to find out more about volunteering with them!

St Mary's Preservation Trust preserves and cares for a unique and significant old church in Burwick in South Ronaldsay. The church was a community meeting point for hundreds of years and there are lots of good memory’s associated with it. The Trust want this to continue by holding public events (the bonfire, storytelling) and maintaining the building so it survives for future generations. The group is light hearted and easy going. We meet around 4 times a year and have 3 to 4 events for the public each year. You will get to be involved in a historic place with lots of interesting things happening and be part of a friendly group of people.
The post of secretary is pretty light touch. The main thing we require is someone to help with the collection of minutes, writing them up and sending them out to the group. Later on, this role can expand to a full secretary position if so desired. This would be organising meetings and chasing up on tasks. So if you’ve never been on a board before this would be a great first role.

We require the post of Treasurer. The main responsibility is to prepare the accounts for submission to OSCR, the Scottish charity regulator. You would also keep track of donations and other income and expenditure.

What will I be doing?
Aberlour Sycamore Services offer a safe and loving place to live for children who have experienced abuse or trauma. As a volunteer Befriender, you can play an active role in supporting a child emotionally, socially and helping them to enjoy a range of opportunities and activities. Volunteer Befrienders spend regular 1:1 time with a child to build up a trusting relationship, to develop interests and hobbies, and to be a consistent figure in a child’s life to support them through life transitions.
The impact you can make
Children living in our Sycamore Residential Services can benefit hugely from having a Befriender. Spending time on a 1:1 basis allows children to develop their communication skills and build their confidence and self-esteem through sharing in a fun activity.
The benefits to you
By volunteering as a Befriender in our Sycamore Residential Services, you can gain valuable experience of working with children and young people and developing an awareness of the issues affecting them. Volunteers can gain a sense of satisfaction knowing they are helping others to develop new skills and achieve their potential, while developing their own confidence and having fun. Volunteers are valued members of Sycamore Residential teams.
Volunteer Befrienders typically spent time with a child once a month, during evenings and weekends.
