Want to help our oceans but don’t know where to start? Ghost Fishing UK is appealing for help in Shetland between the 6th and 11th of August 2023. If you are on Shetland during these dates and would like to help turn lost fishing gear into a recycled product, read on… We are looking for volunteers to roll their sleeves up and come and help us in the evenings at Lerwick harbour quayside. Any lost fishing gear we find needs to be sorted, pressure washed and bagged, ready for transport to the mainland for recycling. Any creel pots we find will be cleaned and sorted, awaiting collection from fishermen who want them. We expect the vessel MV Valhalla to return to the harbour at approximately 5 pm each day, where we will need some assistance unloading, cleaning, and sorting any gear found. Updates on our progress will be daily via our social media channels. You’ll need your wellies, old or waterproof clothes and gloves if you have some (we can provide if you need them). We will provide all cutting and pressure-washing equipment. Don’t forget to join us on Thursday evening, 10th August, (adults only) for an evening social and progress update and a Q&A session with the team. We look forward to seeing you there!

Together, we can be right there for people with cancer. The Kiltwalk is a popular walking event series in Scotland. Kiltwalkers choose to take on one of three distances: Mighty Stride (26 Miles), Big Stroll (15 Miles) or The Wee Wander (3 Miles). The Aberdeen Kiltwalk takes place on Sunday 4th June 2023 and our cheerpoint will be based at Polmuir Road, Aberdeen, AB11 7TH. Volunteers must make their own way there, but volunteer expenses are available. You will receive an email brief with all of the information you need ahead of the event, and will be guided on the day by one of our experienced lead volunteers. A young carer is someone up to the age of 18 who provides unpaid help and support to a relative, friend or neighbour who due to illness or disability cannot manage to live independently without the carer’s help. It may involve practical support like cooking, housework, or emotional support. A group volunteer with Aberdeen Young Carers will assist staff members in delivering any planned activities e.g. arts and crafts, baking etc. They will actively participate with the activity, encourage young people to join in and have fun and build up positive relationships with the children and young people by being friendly and non-judgemental. They will also have the opportunity to lead groups if they wish to. At this time we are predominantly looking for volunteers to help at our School Holiday groups in the Summer Holidays in 2023. We are working on a schedule of groups which we would need volunteers for but these groups will have a range of activities! There will also be the opportunity for volunteers to help with our monthly groups, on an ad-hoc basis or at events. Events typically include summer outings, Christmas parties and Young Carers’ festivals. Further opportunities are available to assist in promoting our events e.g. putting up posters and spreading the word, in helping us at groups. Excellent support and relevant training is provided and our volunteers tell us about lots of other benefits of volunteering including; experience of working with children, young people and families; experience for your CV; supporting your local community; meeting new people; increasing self-confidence; feeling like you are making a difference; improving your health and wellbeing; and a chance to contribute to a worthwhile children’s charity. Join Team Marie Curie as we cheer our kiltwalkers on from the sidelines! We can't wait to celebrate our Aberdeen kiltwalkers and would love for you to join us on Sunday 4th June. We rely on volunteers like you to help us improve the lives of people with sight loss. We have dogs at various ages and stages of their career who may need temporary accommodation and the need will be dependent on your location and circumstances. In this role your support will include: • Providing a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for a dog or puppy. • Ensuring the dog or puppy is fed, exercised, and cared for to maintain excellent health. • Using positive reinforcement training techniques to teach or maintain behaviours. • Ensuring the dog is not left alone for more than 4 hours in a 24-hour period. Foster volunteers who care for dogs in training need to drop off and collect their dog from a local regional centre. Times are normally Monday to Friday between 8 - 9am and 5 - 6pm however there are allowances. Dogs will stay with our staff in the centre during the day to complete training. In the evenings and at weekends volunteer dog fosterers will keep the dog at home.
