Elgin Museum is Scotland’s oldest continuously independent museum and run entirely by volunteers. Would you be interested in joining us as a visitor service volunteer?
This very rewarding work includes welcoming visitors and helping visitor's orientate themselves to the museum, so they can make the most of their visit!
A willingness to learn about the Museums collections, and ability to explain to visitors how and where to access information, are essential for the volunteer role. (Looking at the displays and their interpretation is the best way to familiarise yourself – and you can always ask questions of more seasoned volunteers on duty with you!)
The ability to serve in the shop, including the use of a (very simple) card reader and to communicate with the front desk via walkie would also be helpful.
Full Training will be given with an induction to the Museum’s workings. Volunteers will need to be comfortable and able to work independently after being given initial training.
If you feel this volunteering role is for you, please email: curator@elginmuseum.org.uk or visit our website https://elginmuseum.org.uk/volunteering/

Fancy volunteering in a nutrition study and being part of world-leading research? This is an opportunity to help develop future clinical research into pelvic cancers!
We are looking for men and women over 60 years old, and the overall goal of our study is to explore the mechanism of action of dietary fibre on the gut microbiota. The gut microbiota includes all the small organisms that live in a healthy gut, for example bacteria. And we think that these bacteria enhance the way our body fights cancer cells. As these bacteria are influenced by what we eat, we think that adding specific dietary fibres to a cancer patients diet might help tolerate the cancer therapy better.
However, there is a long way to go before we can prove this in clinical trials and implement this in routine clinical care. The current study is the first step in our journey.
If you decide to be part of our study, we will ask you to take 3 different dietary fibre supplements for 14 days at a time. We will ask you to add these to water or orange juice and consume them twice a day. At the first and last day in which you will take the different supplements, you be invited to the Human Nutrition Unit, our study facility, for a test day.
On these test days, once you arrive in the morning, we will receive your stool sample and provide you with breakfast. After breakfast, you will be asked to fill in a questionnaire about your quality of life in the last 2 weeks, to assess the effect of the supplement on your health and wellbeing. Lastly, we will take a blood sample 5 hours after breakfast, after which the test day ends.
We will also inform about your diet with questionnaires, as your diet influences your gut microbiome. We do this using 2 different questionnaires; one enquires about your food intake in the last 3 months, the other asks you to keep a food diary to note down all the food and drinks you have consumed in the 3 days before the 6 test days. Your answers to questionnaires, and your stool and blood samples will help us better understand the role of dietary fibre in our gut.
If you are interested in participating or would like to know more about the study, please click the following link https://www.abdn.ac.uk/rowett/volunteer/dietary_fibre_study.php or email m.vandenhaak.22@abdn.ac.uk
Our statistics have revealed that 218,000 over 50s in Scotland say they feel lonely all or most of the time. As people get older, it can be harder to maintain social connections. Retirement, bereavement or moving somewhere new can leave people feeling lonely and isolated.
That's where you come in!
The Age Scotland Community Connecting Service aims to connect older people across Scotland to social groups and clubs in their local community.
As a Community Researcher, you'll help to identify and research groups and clubs around the country, updating our Community Connecting database with the most accurate and up-to-date information.
A fantastic opportunity to help and make a real difference. All volunteer assistance is greatly appreciated.

Interested in weight loss, nutrition, gut bacteria, and health?
The Rowett Institute are looking to recruit participants (with moderate habitual fibre intake) for a weight loss study to look at the effects of dietary fibre and artificial sweeteners on gut health.
In this study, the research team will ask you to follow a set diet (all food provided) for six weeks, the diet will vary in fibre content and type.
You will be asked to come to the Rowett Institute for a screening session and to complete a 7day food diary to confirm that you are eligible. Once on the study you will be asked to collect food every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and on four of these occasions there will also be a short test session (approximately 1hr) where will take a blood sample and ask you to provide a stool sample.
During the 6 week study participants will also be asked to wear glucose monitors which are applied to the back of the arm.
At the end of the study participants will receive feedback on health markers (like cholesterol).
Eligibility:
*Overweight adults (BMI 28-40kg/m²) who eat 18-23g of fibre per day. You will not be able to participate if you have a food allergy or are vegetarian.

*What does a Zero Tolerance trustee do?
Trustees look after Zero Tolerance’s assets and make sure the charity fulfils its main aim, which is the prevention of violence against women in all its forms. Our Trustees commit to volunteering at least 4 hours a month. This time includes attending quarterly online Board meetings, sub-committee meetings, and up to two in-person training and development days annually.
*The role of the Treasurer
The Treasurer is the Chair of the finance sub-committee. Working closely with the Co-Directors and Operations Manager, they oversee the preparation of the management accounts for distribution to the Board before each Board meeting. The Treasurer guides and advises the Board of Trustees on all matters relating to the financial administration of the charity, the approval of budgets, independently audited annual accounts, and financial statements. With the other trustees, the Treasurer develops strategic plans that ensure that the charity is on a stable financial footing.
*What do we offer?
-The chance to use your experience to shape our work to end violence against women and girls in Scotland.
-Induction and training on how to be a charity trustee plus a board ‘buddy’.
-As far as possible we will offer practical support to carry out the role, depending on individual needs, for example equipment, travel expenses, or help to cover caring responsibilities.
-Training on our policy areas.
-Equality and diversity training.
