The Museum of Communication aims to study, collect, preserve and exhibit items that tell the story of communication from the days of pre-electric telegraph to the latest state-of-the-art technology. The museum is run entirely by volunteers, and they are looking to grow their team with Events Assistants.
The museum hosts lectures throughout the year on a variety of topics, and engages in outreach activities in schools, clubs and societies in the local community. As an Events Assistant, you can get involved with planning and hosting lectures, or with arranging and attending outreach events. Recent lectures have included Commonwealth War Graves and D-Day, and typically include historical topics and the role of communication within them.
If you would like to gain experience of events, have an interest in history, or are passionate about engaging local people in learning, this is the perfect role for you.

Organisation aims and objectives

The MOC has existed formally since 1993. It uses its extensive collection to inform, educate and entertain the public about the exciting developments in communications technology which have given rise to the way of life we enjoy today. It has mounted many exhibitions including a major one at Saltire Court in Edinburgh. They currently have a museum site in Burntisland that is free for the community to access.

Restrictions

Experience required: Museum of Communication is looking for volunteers that are confident in communicating with members of the public and are willing to learn about the museum. No previous experience is needed.
Travel details: Museum of Communication, 131 High Street, Burntisland, KY3 9AA. Lectures will take place within the museum, and outreach events will take place in various locations within the local community.
Minimum age: 16

Support

Taster available: Yes
Taster details: Volunteers are invited to visit the museum ahead of signing up to volunteer.
Training details: Volunteers will be given a full induction to the museum, and will be able to shadow an existing volunteer.

Local Events Assistant

No-one Dies Alone Ayrshire is a registered charity providing compassionate care to people in communities across Ayrshire who are alone and dying. Our experienced volunteers help people by being there in their final hours, offering a break and support to those with families who need it. We offer our support free of charge and rely on alternative funding and events, which we organise from time to time. We are looking for volunteers to assist at local events. NODa Ayrshire (No-one Dies Alone) are looking for volunteers to operate stalls at events handing out leaflets and spreading awareness. We can't underestimate how crucial this role is to helping us reach people who aren't on social media but need our services. Full training and support offered and travel expenses paid. What you will be doing: • Engage with the public by operating a stall and handing out leaflets • Set up and break down on event days. • Ensure the safety and enjoyment of the visiting general public. • May also involve supporting people who visit the stall. Volunteering can be a rewarding and much valued service and has many benefits including meeting new people and gaining new skills.

Volunteer Tour Guide - Door Open Days

Mortuary Chapel Western Cemetery Arbroath DD11 4HA • The Mortuary Chapel was designed by Patrick Allan-Fraser as a memorial to his late wife Elizabeth and her deceased parents John Fraser and Elizabeth Parrot Fraser. Work began in 1875 based on an outline plan by Allan-Fraser to which he added details as building progressed. • Everyone who visits quickly realises that this is a remarkable building, possibly the most unusual and most instantly appealing of the many fine buildings within Arbroath. However, it is also very important on a national scale. It could claim to be one of the best buildings of its date in Scotland. • The building is also notable for its eclectic mix of styles, including reference to Scottish, English and possibly other precedents from East European Gothic. Every part of the building is important because every part received great care in design. • The Mortuary Chapel is located in the Western Cemetery. Tours will be available at 12 noon, 1pm and 2pm, led by Hospitalfield Volunteer Tour Guides. Booking is not required for this venue, however access will be by tour only. • The chapel has one step on entering and the upper levels are up a number of stairs. Dogs are not allowed inside the mortuary chapel (unless an assistance/guide dog).

Steam Locomotive Onboard Volunteers

We have a number of roles including - Chef for the Locomotive Crew - Retail sales selling the charity merchandise - Carriage Hosts to look after our passengers, taking special care of those who may be less mobile. Rail Tours start from Edinburgh go across the Forth Road Bridge and up to Aberdeen and return, Glasgow to Aberdeen. Other routes to be confirmed very soon.
