On the 20th March 2011 the people of Girvan celebrated the official opening of their community garden. People couldn't believe the transformation of what was once a neglected and overgrown tree nursery. Before we took over the area in 2006/07 it had lain derelict for over 30 years. We knew it had lots of potential and so we decided to ask the community what they thought of turning it into a community garden. The support was overwhelming. As you can imagine there was lots to do to get the area into a state where we could start to design and plant. We relied heavily on volunteers who are the backbone of our community garden. In July 2010 we became part of the Beechgrove Garden Community Garden’s project. They came and filmed us and helped with our design ideas. It finally felt like we were really getting somewhere. After all of the hard work it's wonderful to be able to open the garden up to so many different people. We relish the opportunity to promote gardening and other related activities particularly to those who are new gardeners and young children. We support community well-being and better health through gardening. Events held in the community garden are well attended and supported. We are currently looking for volunteer Cafe Assistants to help us on Saturdays in our Community Garden Cafe. Do you have a few free hours on Saturdays? Food Train is an award winning charity providing services to older people who are no longer able to manage independently, through age, ill health, frailty or disability. The Connects service offers a volunteer matching service for grocery shopping, telephone befriending and meal delivery. Help to combat feelings of loneliness, isolation and malnutrition amongst older people (55+) by becoming a Volunteer Cook. You do not need to be a Jamie or Nigella to get involved – just the ability to prepare an extra portion of your meal once a week, to drop off with an older neighbour and have a light hearted blether with them. The role is fun, flexible and can be done at a time that suits you and your matched member! *The Role: · Paired with an older person to prepare an extra portion of your home cooked meal and deliver it to them at their home. · Have a wee chat, agree times and dates for the next meal and serve up/help put the meal away as required. · To report back to Food Train Connects team and complete all required documentation after each visit. · To report any matters of concern to Food Train staff · To inform Food Train Staff of any accidents, incidents or complaints · To maintain confidentiality · To represent Food Train in a professional manner to customers and the wider community A fantastic opportunity to help make a real difference. Volunteering as a member of the Café team you will play an integral part of Kirkmichael's community shop and cafe, by helping to deliver a café experience for our visitors and guests whether in the Café or at events. Your role as a Community Cafe volunteer will be: Assisting the Café team in the day to day running of the Café, such as the preparation and delivery of various hot and cold food and drinks and assisting with the day to day running of the Café. - Dealing with the visitors and customers in a friendly and polite manner. - Handling cash. - Delivering food and drink to our guests and clearing tables. - Emptying waste bins. We support all volunteers and offer to pay for training such as the online food handling course. Volunteers are always supported by trustee members and/or staff at the shop and cafe.
