Role Description:
We rely on volunteers like you to help us improve the lives of people with sight loss. In this role your support will include:
• Following Guide Dogs Puppy Raising for Excellent Partnerships (PREP) programme, to raise and prepare a puppy to become a guide dog.
• Using our guidelines to care for your puppy e.g., providing sufficient exercise.
• Familiarising a puppy to a wide range of environments.
• Teaching a puppy to be alone by gradually building up from a few minutes to a maximum of 4 hours.
• Attending regular puppy classes.
• Meeting regularly with Guide Dogs representatives to discuss your pup’s development.
• Completing regular on-line questionnaires to help us monitor puppy progress

Volunteering is a two-way street, so in return for your time you will get;
• The satisfaction in knowing you are supporting people with sight loss to live actively, independently, and well.
• The challenge and reward of seeing a puppy develop in your home.
• The opportunity to learn and develop your understanding in dog body language, learning theory, the human animal bond and the life of a Guide Dog.

To recruit new volunteers in the Scottish Borders. We are currently in need of Puppy Raisers, to look after our puppies for the first year of their lives.

Experience required: Ideally you will: • Have time to invest in raising a puppy. • Be physically able to handle large breed dogs (around 25-40kg). • Have your own car or access to a car. • Have your own home or written permission to have a dog in the home. • Have access to a secure area where the puppy could go to the toilet during the day. • Be able to access online content and training materials (you will need your own email address). • If you don’t feel you tick every box but are sure this role is the one for you, please drop us a message and tell us why. Travel details: This opportunity takes place int he volunteers own home. Volunteers are required in the following areas of the Scottish Borders : Berwickshire, Galashiels, Kelso, Jedburgh and Hawick,

Expenses paid: Yes
Expenses details: Volunteering for Guide Dogs should never leave you out of pocket. We’ll make sure we pay any expenses related to your volunteering with us in line with our policy. Expenses paid include dog food and vet bills.
Training details: This role has 13 hours of training and then you’ll be ready to go! These modules include: • PREP training. • Ongoing training both virtually and face to face as part of the role. If you have questions about the training requirements, we can answer these at your interview along with any other support or accessibility needs you may have.

Guide Dog Puppy Raiser (Perth & Kinross)

You will be providing a puppy with a vital foundation for its future role as a guide dog. This is a full-time volunteering opportunity as a puppy will live with you in your home for around 12-16 months. It should be noted that although it is possible for another Puppy Raiser to look after a dog on your behalf for short periods of time that this may not always be possible. In this role your support will include: - • Developing, caring, and providing for the needs of one of our puppies using Positive Reinforcement Techniques and following Guide Dogs Puppy Raising for Excellent Partnerships (PREP) programme • Familiarising a puppy to a wide range of environments including shops and outdoor off lead exercise areas in all climates and seasons. • Teaching a puppy, it is ok to be left alone by gradually building up from a few minutes to a maximum of 4 hours • Attending regular puppy classes • Meeting with Guide Dogs representatives to discuss your pup’s development • Completing regular on-line questionnaires to help us monitor puppy progress Ideally you will: • Be able to manage large breed dogs (around 25-40kg) • Have access to a car on a weekly basis for training and vet visits • Have your own home or written permission to have a dog in the home • Have access to a secure area where the puppy could go to the toilet during the day, especially first thing in the morning and last thing at night • Be able to access online content and training materials (you will need your own email address) If you do not feel you tick every box but are sure this role is the one for you, please drop us a message and tell us why. Outdoor Education Assistant

An exciting opportunity to join the Under the Trees team, working in the great and beautiful outdoors whilst gaining valuable experience working with young children and young adults. You will potentially be working in all weathers and in all seasons - we can provide waterproofs! Under the Trees runs fun and educational sessions for school children in the Falkirk and Stirling areas, as well as a programme of public events for all ages, backgrounds and abilities. Events run all year round. One to One Volunteer Befriender

One to One Volunteer Befriender We are looking for friendly and reliable people who enjoy the company of others. Sensory Awareness training will be provided and so no previous experience of working with people who has sight/hearing loss is required. A PVG check will be required for this role, and we would be looking for a minimum of 6 months commitment. Tasks • To provide company and emotional support • To assist service user to develop social contacts by joining community events and social groups • To support a service user with shopping • To provide telephonic befriending when necessary • To accompany service user to café or for a healthy walk • To commit to a minimum of 6 hours per month. We are looking for volunteer/s who drive and can assist our service users with transport. But not driving would not exclude you from being suitable for the role.
