Do you want to transform local green spaces for the environment, wildlife and your local community? The gardening and environmental conservation activities of TCV’s Green Gym at Kinneil Estate in Bo’ness provides the added extra of improving your own health, fitness and wellbeing. Following the appointment of a new project officer, The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) for Scotland are resuming their Green Gym sessions at Kinneil Estate on Thursday mornings between 10am and 1pm. The sessions are open to all volunteers from the community. These sessions are weekly and up to three hours in length. Volunteers can join in any session, or multiple sessions, with a variety of tasks, including: planting trees, growing food, creating wildflower meadows, digging ponds, managing woodland, making pathways and so much more – all with the guidance of your local TCV team. Get fresh air and exercise, and meet new people – come along, and get involved. Attend as few or as many sessions as you feel able to manage. WDCS Shorewatch programme is looking for dedicated volunteers to carry out 10 minute whale and dolphin monitoring surveys ('Shorewatch') from designated watching sites along the Scottish Coastline., and at points in Harris and Lewis. Volunteers will be trained to identify common whale, dolphin and porpoise species found in Scottish waters, use specialised watching equipment and record presence and absence sightings data. The programme aims to provide long term, regular and year-round monitoring at sites of particular interest. With the aim of learning more about how whales and dolphins use these areas; highlighting any changes in distribution and behaviour. By collecting information to help WDCS understand more about whales and dolphins locally, volunteers will be actively contributing to their protection.

A wide range of opportunities are available and include: Fosterers – a spare room to care for a cat until a new home is found. All equipment and food etc provided. Home checkers – visiting prospective new cat owners. Fostering support and co ordination – helping fosterers and organising cat food distribution, equipment etc Equipment inventory – keeping an up to date list of all equipment and its location. Helpline – taking phone calls from the public. Food store coordinator – making sure fosterers have sufficient food of an appropriate type and caring for supplies. Kitten socialising – assisting fosterers to socialise young kittens to meeting different people and get used to them. TNR Trap, Neuter and Return – trapping feral cats, taking them to the vets to be neutered and then releasing them back to site. Involves learning about the colony and getting them used to being fed in a trap; arranging neutering with the vets; keeping the cats safe until fully recovered and able to rejoin the colony; arranging for kittens young enough to be socialised to be fostered. Transport – cats to vets etc; goods and equipment to where needed. Collecting and sorting donated goods. Storing donated goods, equipment and cat food. Fundraiser – to organise fundraising events. On line auctions – organise online auctions of donated goods. Stall helpers – assisting on stalls. Crafts – making crafts to sell. Grant applications – find and apply for appropriate grants and funding. Sunday tea staff – assisting at Sunday teas. Trustee – joining the trustees. Marketing. DIY – DIY skills to help maintain pens and equipment
