Boys Brigade Volunteers

Boys Brigade Aberdeen
Postcode: AB10 1JJ
The Boys’ Brigade is the oldest uniformed youth organisation in the country. We promote habits which leads young people to be good all round citizens, through an extensive programme. It is rewarding and an honour to watch 5 year old shy children grown into confident young adults, ready to play their part in society. With Covid-19 rules many Companies are looking for additional volunteers to help run the different Sections separately. Helping out in a BB group with children and young people can make all the difference to young lives – meaning happier young people, happier communities and a society that values the contribution that we can all make; young, old or in-between. We call our volunteers “leaders” because they guide a course for children and young people. *What do volunteers do? There are lots of different ways that you can help. We work with boys and girls from all backgrounds and of all faiths, and with those with no faith. Most of our volunteers come along for a couple of hours a week in the evening and get involved with one or more of our four age sections: Anchors, Juniors, Company, Seniors. We need volunteers to help children with activities, games, sport, arts and crafts, hobbies, music etc. Whatever you can help with is greatly valued. We also want volunteers who will be able to relate to young people and over time, become adults they can trust and talk to. *I can't help every week, do you still want me? Yes! The beauty of volunteering with the BB is that you can be flexible, and if you can only help out once a month, or even once a year at the annual camp then we are happy to welcome you. *What is the age limit? You can volunteer from 14+ as a Young Leader, with a wider range of roles for those aged 18+. There’s no upper age limit. We really do welcome applications from all ages. *Do I have to be Christian? Some churches where BB groups are based like leaders to be members of that church, but are happy that certain roles are performed by people who are in sympathy with the Christian basis of the BB. Other than that, we welcome volunteers from all backgrounds and cultures. There are BB groups in and around Aberdeen, looking for volunteers, from Cove to Balmedie, Powis, Northfield, Woodside and the Bridge of Don, and everywhere in between. There will be a group near you who will welcome and greatly appreciate your help. A fantastic opportunity to help and make a real difference for people and communities. For further information please contact Andy Cowie at email: acowie999@btinternet.com or tel.: 01224 7903248 / 07715279478.

Volunteer Mentors

MCR Pathways (Aberdeen)
Postcode: AB10 1AB
MCR Pathways has been partnering with schools since 2007 so we know just how amazing the young people of Scotland are. However, sometimes due to situations out of their control, young people face challenges that make it more difficult for them to succeed. That’s why providing the simple support of a mentor is so important and has been proven to make a life-changing difference. This is where you can help... MCR recruits and trains volunteer mentors who are matched with a young person that shares similar interests, hobbies or career aspirations. Mentors meet with their young person at their school for just one hour per week and the difference this makes is transformational. The mentoring relationship is unique as young people establish a friendship with someone who’s there, just for them and is not a teacher, parent, guardian or counsellor. The impact on their life is huge. Recent ScotCen research shows 81.6% of mentored care-experienced pupils left school for college, university or a job, compared with 56.3% of those young people not being mentored. We are hoping to help even more young people in the area reach their potential and are looking for over 150 mentors from Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire In Aberdeen St Machar Academy has been part of the programme since August 2018 and, in 2020 was joined by Northfield, Hazlehead, Dyce, Harlaw and Lochside Academies. Aberdeenshire schools participating in the programme are Banff, Fraserburgh, Inverurie, Peterhead and The Gordons Schools Huntly The only qualification you need to be a mentor is the desire to help. All young people are different and have different needs, so it’s important that our mentors come from all walks of life. Volunteer mentors are asked to commit just one hour a week for a minimum of one year and will be fully trained and PVG checked before being matched with a young person from an Aberdeen or Aberdeenshire school. The building of the relationship with a young person is facilitated by our fantastic MCR Pathways Coordinators who are based in each school and work with our young people on a daily basis. We’re asking you to #BeTheBridge between a young person’s talent and life possibilities. For only one hour per week, you can change a life. This year, why not do something to make a difference that lasts a lifetime. Register online at https://mcrpathways.org/become-a-mentor/ For any further details please contact Heidi Bisset, Programme and Schools Manager- Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire at email: mentor.services@mcrpathways.org or tel: 07587104597

Volunteer Mentor

MCR Pathways (Shetland)
Postcode: ZE1 0JP
At MCR, we know that there is amazing potential and talent in all young people, regardless of their home life and circumstances. Bur for many, that potential has yet to be discovered. Life experience has knocked the confidence out of some, firmly locking away those seeds of aspiration and hope. It is our aim to uncover, nurture, and develop the skills and capabilities of our most disadvantaged young people. We bridge talent with opportunity through relationship focused mentoring. We're looking for mentors to #BeTheBridge for the young people of Anderson High School. All that's required is one hour per week and a desire to help a young person. Building a positive relationship is based on non-judgemental listening and encouragement. It's about turning up consistently, for no other reason than you care. When one person mentors, two lives are changed. Our mentors help realise the full potential of their young person and empower them with the confidence and belief to make it happen. Mentoring is creating a wave of positive change, impacting our schools, community and country.

Family Support Volunteer

Volunteering Matters
Postcode: EH7 5JT
Volunteering Matters Overview At Volunteering Matters we believe everyone in the UK should have the opportunity to thrive, so we bring people together to overcome some of society’s most complex issues through the power of volunteering. We partner with communities to overcome adversity, tackling social isolation and loneliness, improving health, developing skills and opportunities. And because we’re a national charity, we do this at scale, sharing our expertise and building partnerships to make an even bigger impact. We turn local knowledge and energy into action and progress, building stronger communities and a better future for all. Project Overview Our Volunteers Supporting Families in Edinburgh project offers practical and emotional support to families across the South East and South West localities of Edinburgh, empowering them to face a range of life challenges. We recruit, train and match dedicated, local volunteers to help families every step of the way, spending 1-1 time together on a personalised set of goals chosen by the family, for the family. We can help in many ways, such as improved living standards, budgeting, healthier eating, better school life and behaviour, access to health and wellbeing aid, as well as introducing parents to community resources, to name a few. So far, thousands of families across the UK have benefitted from our service and we are now delighted to extend the programmes reach to families in Edinburgh. Who can volunteer with us? Our volunteers are locally based people with an understanding of the challenges that families are facing. Aged 18+, each volunteer brings different life experiences and skills that they can use to help the family they are matched to, offering support on a weekly basis, usually for 6-9 months at a time that suits everyone. They build a strong relationship based on trust and mutual respect, acting as a friendly face who listens and cares about the family. All volunteers are interviewed, trained to the highest standards and undergo disclosure checks before being matched with a family. What can we offer volunteers? As well as the sense of achievement that comes through supporting a family, our volunteers will have the opportunity to learn and develop new skills, attend social events with other volunteers and enhance their employability. Certificates are provided upon completion of induction training and at the end of the commitment, with project staff happy to provide references for future studies or employment.

MCR Pathways - Clacks
Postcode: G3 7DN
The MCR Pathways programme was founded in 2007. In 2018, the programme began expanding across Scotland with the Young Clackmannanshire Talent (YCT) programme launching in 2019. YCT is helping young people find, grow and use their talent throughout Clackmannanshire. When one person mentors, two lives are changed. Volunteer mentors spend one hour a week listening to and encouraging their young person. The only qualification you need to be a mentor is the desire to help. Young people are matched with a mentor based on their personalities, interests and career aspirations. All young people are different and have different needs, so it’s important that mentors come from all walks of life. Mentors are role models, who make a life-changing difference to young people. Additionally, mentoring has been shown to make a powerful and positive impact on those who give their time and support. If you are interested in spending one hour a week with a local young person, assisting them to realise their aspirations, MCR will provide all the support and training you require! The young people COVEY work with are referred to us by social work; education or other agencies. They could be experiencing problems within their family; school or community. They may be feeling isolated due to a lack of peer friendship; family support; a health problem or perhaps just need a break from caring responsibilities in their own family life. Befriending is very rewarding and with our training and the support of your coordinator you will be able to navigate any challenges that arise. Befrienders and young people can both benefit from the new friendship and enjoy shared experiences. There is no cost to volunteers, however we ask for 2-3 hours of your time per week. COVEY are currently continuing to recruit Befrienders both for group and one to one matches. There is an upcoming opportunity for you to take part in our Befriender training online via Zoom. On successful completion of this training, along with our application process and, PVG and references checks you will be able to support vulnerable young people through online groups and/or regular telephone contact. COVEY expects a one year commitment from all Befrienders however given current circumstances there is more flexibility around this and you are able to commit for 3 months, 6 months or one year dependent on your own circumstances

Career Ambassador (Hairdressing)

Graeme High School
Postcode: FK1 1XR
Graeme High School in central Falkirk would like to engage with a volunteer who can lend their skills and experience as a hairdresser to enrich the experience of a group of secondary (3rd and 4th year) pupils who have chosen to study for a City & Guilds Level 1 Certificate in an Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector. As well as the mandatory theory units the pupils are presented for 3 practical units – Shampoo and Conditioning Hair, Plaiting and Twisting Hair and Styling Women’s Hair. The involvement of a volunteer who is an experienced hairdresser will add value to the pupil’s learning by offering the perspective of someone who has first-hand experience of the industry and knowledge of how the skills being learned might translate into future employment. This is not a formal teaching role and the successful volunteer will be fully supported at all times by the class teacher, they will not instruct the class on their own at any time or be responsible for managing the class. The volunteer is not responsible for any pupil’s accreditation however they would support the class teacher in assessing pupils’ practical skills by observing pupils’ work and completing prepared assessment checklists. Role Description: • Demonstrate various hairdressing techniques in a salon environment (specific techniques to be agreed with the class teacher in line with the various techniques pupils will learn for their City & Guilds course outcomes, for example braiding techniques) • Provide pupils with specific instruction on how to carry out the technique during the demonstration • Provide informal pupil feedback on their technique to help them to improve • Most techniques will be demonstrated on the salon training heads but pupils often pair up to practise techniques and staff would provide support with this Availability: The programme is delivered over the course of the week but for volunteering purposes the core commitment is all day on a Wednesday (8.50 am until 2.40pm with appropriate coffee and lunch breaks). If a volunteer is keen to offer more than that then other days and times can be identified. The class teacher will work with any interested volunteer to agree mutually suitable times, dates and sessions. COVID: Graeme High School have conducted a full risk assessment for this volunteer to engage with the school, and the class pupils. A full induction will be carried out by Jennifer Lauder (class teacher) before the volunteer undertakes any tasks, this will include general health and safety guidance, as well as the COVID specific measures in place. Graeme High School have appropriate insurance to cover engaging with volunteers in this role.

Camp Safeguarding Officer

Over The Wall
Postcode: PH2 9EG
Our Safeguarding Officers are an extremely important part of Camp as they act as ambassadors of our Safeguarding policy, helping to ensure the mutual protection of Campers/ Volunteers/Staff. You will often be the first port of call for Volunteers concerned the Safeguarding Policy has been breached, that Campers or Volunteers are potentially the victims of neglect or abuse, or any other queries surrounding Safeguarding issues. Your role would be to support the person who has reported concerns to you & also inform OTW staff of their disclosure. Whilst you will not be responsible for contacting the appropriate authorities to investigate concerns, you will be vital in ensuring the correct channels are made aware of any Safeguarding breaches. Throughout Camp you will need to be vigilant & observant to ensure Safeguarding procedures are in place & being followed. As with our ‘Team Mate’ volunteers you will also be allocated to a Camp team & complete the everyday Team Mate role. You will therefore be an essential part of implementing Therapeutic Recreation at Camp (see our website for more info.), helping to support/guide/inspire/empower our Campers to maximise their potential/increase confidence. Campers will be divided into teams based on their age groups of 8-10, 11-13, 13-15 & 15-17 years. You will build amazing 1-1 relationships with your team of Campers on a daily basis. In return, as a Volunteer you will: •Participate in a unique, unforgettable experience •Work for a brilliant cause with a reputable national organisation •Meet fantastic new people & make friends

You will receive ongoing support from the Programme Coordinator and OTW staff. On average there are 4 sessions to design & deliver. Each session will need to be tailored to both the age group of the Campers (who are divided into groups of 8-10, 11-13, 13-15 and 15-17) & the varying Camper ability. All of our activities are designed within our model of Therapeutic Recreation (see our website for more info) and to be adaptable to all levels of ability and accessibility. Activity Leaders also help to design, prepare & deliver our Evening Programme. Our Evening Programme could be anything-from a Disco & Talent Show, to bespoke activities such as a Camp Festival, a Whale Hunt or Game Show evening. Whether you have an artistic talent that you want to share or have industry experience that young people might find helpful, it is all about finding what our young people are looking for. The Befriending Programme was born from the work of our Virtual Volunteers during lockdown, so all Befriending sessions will be virtual. A contract detailing the logistics of the session will be drawn up between you and your supervisor, and online training is provided.

Youth Mentor (intandem Project)

Kirkcaldy YMCA
Postcode: KY1 1XT
Become a Mentor for Intandem!! intandem relies on volunteers to provide a positive, trusted and fun role model for children and young people. You will meet weekly with your Mentee (a child or young person aged between 8-14 years) for at least a year to listen and to encourage them to explore their community through different activities. We are looking for volunteers who are good listeners and who can relate to the often difficult life experiences these young people and children may have faced. This type of volunteering is not for everyone – it needs a real commitment of time and energy but offers real rewards in terms of making a difference in a young life. All our volunteers are carefully selected, screened and trained before being matched with a child or young person. It’s up to the young person to make the final decision on a match so you may need to be patient until you are chosen. Some of our mentors had this to say: The training gave me the confidence I needed to do the volunteering. It’s great that the coordinator is always there for support. I got matched quite quickly and we have bonded really well. I enjoyed all the training, we had such a good group it completely prepared me for being matched. I am absolutely loving volunteering and I can’t believe how well my mentee has taken to the project… he is so excited when I pick him up which is amazing. I was given an immense amount of support and training that helped me secure a job in social care. I feel I would not have been able to secure such a job had I not learned so much through volunteering and the training I have had access to and been provided. You can read more and watch a short video about mentoring at https://www.intandem.scot/what-are-you-looking-for/interested-in-becoming-a-mentor/ If you think you are the kind of person who could really make a difference in a young persons life, please email Jo on intandem@ymcakirkcaldy.co.uk to request an application form. We look forward to hearing from you!! (We are based in Kirkcaldy but cover most of Fife)

Food & Fun Volunteers

Aberdeen City Council Food & Fun Programme
Postcode: AB10 1AB
Food and Fun was introduced by the Council as a pilot to deliver free meals and activities to children in key areas of Aberdeen during school holiday periods and has been rolled out on a permanent basis. Over Christmas, as an extension of the project, special events were hosted for young people to enjoy the festivities – from ice skating and crafts to a disco and visit to Santa. For everyone involved in Food and Fun there’s a busy period ahead. The main aim is to ensure children continue to be fed, recognising the importance of school meals during term time for a large number of families, and also to provide the opportunity to take part in physical activity in a nurturing environment. The initiative has been recognised with awards – but the reward and motivation for the many people who have put their heart and soul into developing the programme is in the positive impact there is on children, families and communities. When we talk about our purpose – about caring for our city and our people – we think Food and Fun is a shining example that we can all be incredibly proud of.
