Museum Volunteer

The Trimontium Trust
Postcode: TD6 9LG
Come and help us tell the story of Roman Fort of Trimontium at our museum in Melrose. If you are passionate about history and like meeting new people, we’d love you to join our cohort. The Trimontium Trust has run a museum about the Roman Fort site, Trimontium, for the past 30 years. Situated in Newstead, the site is notable as one of the largest Roman sites north of Hadrian’s Wall, which held a wealth of Roman artefacts and treasures, discovered over the last century. The old Roman Heritage Centre at The Ormiston is currently closed for renovation and will re-open in summer 2021, as part of a National Lottery funded development programme. When it re-opens, it will be a modern museum, with a greatly expanded number of displays and artefacts. Museum volunteers help us welcome visitors to our temporary home at Abbey House in Melrose. They help us manage groups around the museum, answering questions, and telling the story of Trimontium. Volunteers also run the shop, selling souvenirs and membership. Our museum shifts are 11am-4pm and frequency of commitment is flexible. This role would be ideal for someone who wants experience in the Heritage sector, or just enjoys history and wants to share that enthusiasm with others.
