Call Companion Coordinator

Re-engage
Postcode: PH1 5PP
Re-engage exists to support older people who live alone and find it hard to get out in normal times. Call Companions is a telephone befriending service providing regular chats to older people, often living on their own and with little social interaction, launched in response to the Covid-19 crisis. Our call companion coordinators are volunteers, over the age of 18, who oversee a small group of around six call companions and the older people they speak to on a regular basis. As the call companion coordinator, you will be the main point of contact for everyone in your group. You will be in touch regularly with both the volunteers and the older people, making sure they have all the support and information they need to make or receive their regular calls and responding to any queries or concerns. You will keep the team at Re-engage updated and submit a monthly report. This is challenging but rewarding role that makes a big difference in the lives of people experiencing loneliness.

Befriender

VisionPK
Postcode: PH1 5QA
To provide regular friendly conversation and companionship for an elderly, socially isolated person on an ongoing basis. The activities and responsibilities will vary according to the needs of the visually impaired person. Some people require help with reading and writing letters. Others may want to go out for a walk, but can only do so with a sighted guide. Some people like the chance to go shopping, while others just want to sit and chat over a cup of tea. While the Coronavirus is an ongoing threat, befriending will be limited to telephone contact. Friendly chats can be a lifeline at this time. We would hope that this initial telephone contact might later lead to befriending in person.

Community Connectors

Ability Borders SCIO
Postcode: TD7 4LN
Seeking local volunteers who are looking for opportunities to support those within their local community who do not have local friends or family who can respond to them in times of required assistance. at home. Volunteers will be required from local communities across the Scottish Borders to attend alarm calls through an informal relationship with an alarm client/s that they are matched with. Where it has not been possible for trained operators in the Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) to resolve the call by providing an appropriate telephone based response the trained operators will contact Community Connector volunteers to check on and reassure the caller by attending to them at home. We acknowledge that sometimes an alarm can be set off by accident and in this case a volunteer will be on hand to provide reassurance and to reset the alarm. Where appropriate volunteers may provide any help as necessary and where able to do so safely, calling on the professionals and raising the alarm when it is not possible to provide assistance in a safe manner. It is essential that volunteers are able to follow up through reporting back to necessary professionals e.g. ARC and or the emergency services. Wider roles may include providing support to those who are isolated whether through Covid-19 or for any reason and again we seek to address isolation by utilising a number of 'community connectors' with opportunities to attend a range of meetings and events whether informal community / project based events or more formal events where there is an interest, which may include our knitting for new born babies, our Digital Boost and our connect and chat.

Boys Brigade Volunteers

Boys Brigade Aberdeen
Postcode: AB10 1JJ
The Boys’ Brigade is the oldest uniformed youth organisation in the country. We promote habits which leads young people to be good all round citizens, through an extensive programme. It is rewarding and an honour to watch 5 year old shy children grown into confident young adults, ready to play their part in society. With Covid-19 rules many Companies are looking for additional volunteers to help run the different Sections separately. Helping out in a BB group with children and young people can make all the difference to young lives – meaning happier young people, happier communities and a society that values the contribution that we can all make; young, old or in-between. We call our volunteers “leaders” because they guide a course for children and young people. *What do volunteers do? There are lots of different ways that you can help. We work with boys and girls from all backgrounds and of all faiths, and with those with no faith. Most of our volunteers come along for a couple of hours a week in the evening and get involved with one or more of our four age sections: Anchors, Juniors, Company, Seniors. We need volunteers to help children with activities, games, sport, arts and crafts, hobbies, music etc. Whatever you can help with is greatly valued. We also want volunteers who will be able to relate to young people and over time, become adults they can trust and talk to. *I can't help every week, do you still want me? Yes! The beauty of volunteering with the BB is that you can be flexible, and if you can only help out once a month, or even once a year at the annual camp then we are happy to welcome you. *What is the age limit? You can volunteer from 14+ as a Young Leader, with a wider range of roles for those aged 18+. There’s no upper age limit. We really do welcome applications from all ages. *Do I have to be Christian? Some churches where BB groups are based like leaders to be members of that church, but are happy that certain roles are performed by people who are in sympathy with the Christian basis of the BB. Other than that, we welcome volunteers from all backgrounds and cultures. There are BB groups in and around Aberdeen, looking for volunteers, from Cove to Balmedie, Powis, Northfield, Woodside and the Bridge of Don, and everywhere in between. There will be a group near you who will welcome and greatly appreciate your help. A fantastic opportunity to help and make a real difference for people and communities. For further information please contact Andy Cowie at email: acowie999@btinternet.com or tel.: 01224 7903248 / 07715279478.

Digital Hero

West Dunbartonshire CVS
Postcode: G81 1UJ
If Covid has taught us anything, it's that not being on-line leaves you at a real disadvantage. Every news bulletin and TV programme directs us to websites. The dentist sends an appointment by text. And GPs are offering video consultations. Great opportunities for many, but for others in our communities this isn’t convenient, just confusing. The on-line world can seem very scary when you don’t know the right buttons to press…or even how to switch the thing on! The aim of the APEL initiative is to support people to feel they are involved in their communities and build their confidence to be as active as they can - we need your help to make it happen. With your support, someone in your neighbourhood will come to realise that digital ‘stuff’ is easier than they ever thought – and they could maybe even pass that knowledge onto someone else who needs it too. You will spend some time helping people learn how to use smartphones, tablets and (sometimes) computers. You will help them to explore the internet, get signed up to social media and maybe even sign up for a shopping spree! In return you will have the satisfaction that your support has made all the difference in someone else’s life. Please help us. You will understand that for everyone safety you will be asked to go through a PVG (police) check. Due to Covid we have had to have a flexible approach to our opportunities so depending on the restrictions that are active at any point the opportunities may come under one of the following options: Open for recruitment and placement Open for recruitment and risk assessed placement activity Open for some recruitment and some risk assessed placement activity Open for some recruitment but currently closed to placement activity Closed for all recruitment and placement activity

Allotmenteer

West Dunbartonshire CVS

Planting and growing and general gardening can be very theraputical and good for your mental health and general wellbeing as well as keeping you active. We know that many people keep active through gardening, but moving to a flat or experiencing a health condition may hamper their ability to stay involved in a hobby that used to give them so much pleasure - that's where the allotment comes in. Coming along to the community allotment (Growing Friends) offers access to disability friendly growing with companionship thrown in too. We hope you may know more about planting and growing than we do! But it's not essential. We are looking for volunteers who can help us plan the allotment use, help with the planting and growing activity and interact with our volunteer team. All equipment is provided. We just need your enthusiasm. We hope you will get the enormous satisfaction from seeing something you put in the ground grow and flourish. You will also be able to help support others in our communities try something new or something they once enjoyed. The role would suit someone who wanted to get out and about a little more and meet new people.

Foot Care Helper

West Dunbartonshire CVS
Postcode: G81 1UJ
People say you should never cut your toe-nails on a Sunday. But what if you struggled to cut them at all? Toenails grow… and we take for granted just bending down and giving them a trim when they hurt or poke a hole in our socks. For some in our communities, living with a long-term health condition or getting older and less mobile, can mean it isn’t that easy. Imagine how uncomfortable this would be! It could mean pain when you are walking – stopping you from getting out and about, meeting friends or shopping. The aim of the APEL initiative is to support people to feel they are involved in their communities and build their confidence to be as active as they can - we need your help to make it happen. You don’t need any experience – our friends at NHSGGC Podiatry will provide training and we’re here to support you with everything else. The role involves trimming toe-nails and generally just checking that the foot is free of anything that could hold back the person's mobility. You will have the satisfaction of knowing you are making a practical difference to some - helping them stay safe when walking around, help them get out and about and stay active. If you are looking for some experience for your social care studies or interested in podiatry as a career, this could be for you. You will understand that for everyone’s safety you will be asked to go through a PVG (police) check, too.

Postcode: TD11 3EF

TLC – Befriending Service

Everyone can feel lonely and isolated at times, especially if experiencing hardship. This year, in response to the crippling effects of loneliness and isolation on peoples physical, emotional and mental health, that the pandemic has only exacerbated, TLC are setting up a befriending service to combat loneliness and isolation in Aberdeen. Our aim is that our expertly trained and compassionate volunteers will not only provide a lifeline to people, in the form of friendship, but also a helping hand to reconnect to the community, bringing joy and passion back into people’s lives. Due to Covid-19 government restrictions, the project will run differently than usual with the use of video conferencing or by phone, however, once restrictions are eased and it is safe to meet in person, befriending sessions will operate face-to-face in people’s homes or in the community. If you would like to be a beacon of hope for someone in need, please apply to become a TLC Befriender. Telephone Befriender

Elder Voice
Postcode: PH10 6NL
Loneliness is a major issue that is now widely recognised in society today. 200,000 people in Scotland will go half a week without a visit or call from anyone. This problem has been heightened by coronavirus restrictions, in which our usual ways of seeing family, friends, or just familiar faces have been put on pause. Our Telephone Befrienders can help combat this problem by offering encouragement and support, and reducing the amount of time spent that some elderly individuals spend without talking to anyone. Often Befriending Telephone calls can lead to a friendship between the volunteer and older individual, which can provide enormous benefits for both individuals. Our clients are always incredibly grateful for a chat, and for someone to check in with them. This service is available to anyone across Perth and Kinross. Due to the nature of this work, Elder Voice comply with CRBS Disclosure Scotland procedures, and all volunteers undergo PVG disclosures.

Telephone Befriender (Office Based) Ayr

Voluntary Action South Ayrshire
Postcode: KA7 1QJ
Your role as the Telephone Befriender is to engage in conversation with a client over the phone, building a rapport and engaging with them on a weekly basis (note: some befriending matches require more than one call per week). Most of the referrals come from our partners and other agencies but some are self-referrals. All referrals are due to the client being lonely and feeling isolated. It should be noted, that does not necessarily mean they are an older person living on their own. Some referrals are for younger adults who may live in a ‘busy’ household. As a Befriender your co-ordinator will match you to a suitable client. This will be done after finding out more about both yourself and the client to see if there are similarities in personality, hobbies etc. It will not be done purely on age – often the perfect match is with different generations. Your role will be to chat to the client, from the VASA offices in Ayr. You will be required to actively engage and encourage conversation – sometimes this needs to be led by you, the volunteer, as there could be barriers with the clients such as: confidence, disability, speech issues etc. The Telephone Befriender will not be expected to offer advice or to ‘counsel’ the client – you are simply someone to have a chat to and be a listening ear – something for the client to look forward to each week. Befrienders should give minimal personal details about themselves and should never ‘off-load’ their own issues to a client. Your coordinator will always be there to deal with any concerns you have about any of your matches. VASA induction training will be given and guidelines issued around safety protocols for volunteers and clients. Workshops will be available from time to time to cover areas of interest around Befriending. A PVG check will be carried out prior to commencement as a befriender. It should be noted that this role does not include any face-to-face befriending and no volunteer should arrange to meet with a client. Post COVID, if a one-to-one, face-to-face service was developed, appropriate training would be given then if deemed applicable. DUTIES: The role of the Telephone Befriender will be as follows: • To offer friendship and encouragement, via a telephone call, to a few clients who is isolated and lonely. • To provide a listening ear. • To facilitate conversation and engage with clients. • To build up a relationship with the befriendee, giving them something to look forward to on a weekly basis. • To commit to a minimum of 1hr and maximum of 2 hours one morning or afternoon per week. PVG check will be carried out. Criminal Convictions & PVGs: For Roles requiring a PVG, i.e. Befriending, driving etc., having a criminal conviction will not necessarily prevent you from volunteering for VASA. If you have a criminal conviction and would like to discuss it, you can do this in confidence by speaking with our Chief Officer prior to application: email marie@vasa.scot or call 01292 435734. 2 character references will be taken up.

Community Connectors

Ability Borders SCIO
Postcode: TD6 0DA

As well as the mandatory theory units the pupils are presented for 3 practical units – Shampoo and Conditioning Hair, Plaiting and Twisting Hair and Styling Women’s Hair. If a volunteer is keen to offer more than that then other days and times can be identified. Meet and Greeter

West Dunbartonshire CVS
Postcode: G81 1UJ
There are more and more ways for people to get involved in their communities - different places to go, activities to get involved in. But we know that although many people would benefit from the opportunity, they can find it hard to do so. For many, making the first step is difficult as they may feel socially isolated and low in confidence - you could help make all the difference, building their confdence and trust and helping them mix with others or take on a more responsible role in their community. Across a range of our services, we would ask you to be the first person our users meet. You will help provide a friendly welcoming atmosphere, helping our service users and visitors feel comfortable in our surroundings, introduce them to other guests and make sure their visit to us leaves them feeling welcome. You will get a huge sense of satisfaction when you start to see someone who was quiet and withdrawn come out of their shell and start to access the servcies they need to prosper and make new friends. You will also likely increase your own social circle too.

Hearing Aid Support Volunteer

Midlothian Council
Postcode: EH22 1AE
1 in 6 people in Scotland have a hearing impairment . You will know someone who has it, or may have hearing loss yourself. In Midlothian we have recently introduced the hearing aid battery pick up points in all our local libraries. This has been a huge success. It draws people into Libraries, to interact with staff and other members of the community and makes them aware of the wide range of activities which are on offer there. This saves time and money for people, reduces social isolation and eases pressure on the over-stretched staff in Audiology in Edinburgh. It means fewer hearing aids lie unused in drawers, for want of a battery. It really is a win, win. We now want to expand on this by offering repair and maintenance clinics locally too. The replacement of tubing in the hearing aid for example, is required every so often. It is not difficult to do, but it is a bit fiddly, especially for older or disabled people who are a large proportion of hearing aid users. Full training is provided prior to involvement. We have established a clinic which runs on the first Wednesday of every month in Dalkeith Library, 10.30-11.30 am. We also have now established a clinic in Penicuik Town Hall on the last Wednesday of every month 10:30 - 11:30am. If we can recruit more volunteers, we would like to start a clinic in Gorebridge, which would involve a similar monthly commitment. At present due to Covid-19 clinics are suspended but do get in touch if you are interested in this opportunity. Contact will then be made with volunteers once the clinics are re-opened.

Community Connectors

Ability Borders SCIO
Postcode: TD14 5DE
