Equip Mentor (Young Persons)

Volunteering Matters Stirling
Postcode: FK10 3SA
Volunteering Matters is a volunteering and social change charity. They recognise the potential young people across Clackmannanshire possess. Young people have aspirations and goals like us all – but may not currently have the tools or guidance needed to turn these into a reality. The effects of COVID-19 have seen many young people across Clackmannanshire experiencing social isolation, loneliness, poor mental and physical health and without a ‘Positive Destination’. Equip Mentoring uses the power of volunteers to support young people who are not in employment, education or training (NEET) or who need additional guidance and support to enter the employment market, further education or training. The Volunteer Mentors will support the young people practically (such as CV writing and interview skills) as well as emotionally (building confidence, resilience, and independence) whilst reducing social isolation and loneliness. The young person and mentor will meet regularly and will set goals and ambitions to develop new skills, knowledge and experience to pursue the young person's chosen pathway. Volunteering Matters asks volunteers to spend 1-2 hours a week with their match. The time period that Mentors support young people will vary depending on the needs and goals of each match, up to 12 months. Volunteering Matters recognise that every young persons journey & needs are different and so the length of match will depend on their needs and ambitions. The organisation's Engagement Manager offers full support and encouragement to mentors and young people, keeping in touch on a regular basis.

Boys Brigade Volunteers

Boys Brigade Aberdeen
Postcode: AB10 1JJ
The Boys’ Brigade is the oldest uniformed youth organisation in the country. We promote habits which leads young people to be good all round citizens, through an extensive programme. It is rewarding and an honour to watch 5 year old shy children grown into confident young adults, ready to play their part in society. With Covid-19 rules many Companies are looking for additional volunteers to help run the different Sections separately. Helping out in a BB group with children and young people can make all the difference to young lives – meaning happier young people, happier communities and a society that values the contribution that we can all make; young, old or in-between. We call our volunteers “leaders” because they guide a course for children and young people. *What do volunteers do? There are lots of different ways that you can help. We work with boys and girls from all backgrounds and of all faiths, and with those with no faith. Most of our volunteers come along for a couple of hours a week in the evening and get involved with one or more of our four age sections: Anchors, Juniors, Company, Seniors. We need volunteers to help children with activities, games, sport, arts and crafts, hobbies, music etc. Whatever you can help with is greatly valued. We also want volunteers who will be able to relate to young people and over time, become adults they can trust and talk to. *I can't help every week, do you still want me? Yes! The beauty of volunteering with the BB is that you can be flexible, and if you can only help out once a month, or even once a year at the annual camp then we are happy to welcome you. *What is the age limit? You can volunteer from 14+ as a Young Leader, with a wider range of roles for those aged 18+. There’s no upper age limit. We really do welcome applications from all ages. *Do I have to be Christian? Some churches where BB groups are based like leaders to be members of that church, but are happy that certain roles are performed by people who are in sympathy with the Christian basis of the BB. Other than that, we welcome volunteers from all backgrounds and cultures. There are BB groups in and around Aberdeen, looking for volunteers, from Cove to Balmedie, Powis, Northfield, Woodside and the Bridge of Don, and everywhere in between. There will be a group near you who will welcome and greatly appreciate your help. A fantastic opportunity to help and make a real difference for people and communities. Child Contact Centre Volunteer

Relationships Scotland (Scottish Borders)
Postcode: TD14 5SF
Volunteers work with our Duty Officers to help bring families experiencing difficulties back together. Children and parents naturally belong together but there are often barriers to overcome. From broken marriages/relationships to estranged parents/grandparents to parents rehabilitating from jail or addiction. We believe that positive and healthy relationships are at the heart of a successful and vibrant Scotland. Relationships are under greater pressure than ever before, with family breakdown costing the Scottish economy around £3 billion each year. (Relationships Foundation – Cost of Family Breakdown Index 2013) One in five couples in Scotland experienced significant relationship difficulties during lockdown and 6% of couples decided to separate. (Census-wide research undertaken on behalf of Relationships Scotland and Relate, 2020). Scottish Government research found that many organisations had a significant increase in referrals from women experiencing domestic abuse and mental health difficulties. Borders Buddies

Outside the Box (Scottish Borders)
Postcode: EH45 8AG
Give some of your time to support someone in Tweeddale to build their confidence to ‘get back’ post-pandemic. Borders Buddies is a project funded by Scottish Borders Council Tweeddale Community Fund. It was begun because we were hearing from people who were feeling increasingly isolated and disconnected during Lockdown. Some of them had lost touch with friends or groups, some had lost some physical ability. Others had just lost confidence about rejoining groups or getting back to previous activities, even when the rules said it was ok to do this now. We are looking for ‘Buddies’ in the Tweeddale area to befriend people to support them to get back to doing what they would like to do. In some cases this may just involve going round to a garden for a chat every so often. In others it could mean escorting someone to a club or group activity, or even on a bus to do their shopping! You would be fully supported by our relevant policies and risk assessments, and reasonable expenses would be reimbursed. Dates and times to be confirmed. You can meet a person first to see if you get on; after that a regular commitment would be good, we understand that volunteers may need to take a break at times or circumstances may change, which is fine too

Physical Activity Leaders

Scotland Versus Arthritis - Aberdeen City
Postcode: AB10 1AB
Scotland Versus Arthritis is looking for individuals willing to lead short health walks in your area, lead on other physical activities, or facilitate virtual support groups. Full training and on-going support for volunteers will be available. We are also looking for expressions of interest from anyone keen to become an instructor of Tai Chi or Qi Gong for arthritis. The current Covid restrictions have meant that for many the wait for treatment may be a year or more away. Painkilling prescriptions are seldom more than a temporary relief. Support and exercise can however offer a better way to self-manage the daily on-going pain and fatigue. In readiness for the eventual lifting of lockdown we are asking, can you spare an hour or two each month to help? Please contact your local Development Officer, Dr. P. Neville, p.neville@versusarthritis.org or phone 07501 501114 for details.

Assistant Beaver Leader - Penicuik

South East Scotland Scouts
Postcode: EH26 8JB
This vacancy is to provide exciting indoor and outdoor activities for girls and boys aged 6-8 years old. Scouts is both a young persons and adults experience – making friends, trying something new, doing something good for both your community and yourself and importantly making memories. It’s adventurous and rewarding. This Scouting adventure is only possible thanks to our superstar volunteers - ordinary people, like YOU, making an extraordinary difference to young people’s lives. The Assistant Beaver Leader role is one of the most popular choices as you can help with whatever the group is doing. To provide the best Scouting experience and continuity for our young people in Penicuik we need volunteers, in particular a Thursday Assistant Beaver Leader. Do you enjoy interacting with young people? Are you a team player with a positive, can-do attitude? Do you enjoy fun activities – from athletics to astronomy form photography to pioneering? Do you want to do more? Then this is right up your street. What can you do? You can play a pivotal role. Without a Beaver Colony, there would be nobody to feed new members into our Cub pack either. The existing Beavers may not be able to fully embrace the Beaver Scouts opportunity. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, demand for Scouting remains strong but we can only continue (and grow) with your help. This is your chance to make a difference and use your personal skills to help young people gain theirs as a Scout Maker. And volunteering goes both ways – you can benefit too. Like this sound of this? Beavers is packed full of amazing activities to engage and challenge Beaver Scouts of all abilities. From camps, water activities, nature walks, cooking, crafts, sport and so on. This is only possible thanks to our team of adult volunteers. We help volunteers get the most out of their experiences at Scouts by providing opportunities and support as part of team of like-minded individuals. Our approach focuses on what you want to get out of volunteering with Scouts, while respecting how much time you can offer. As Scouts is a well-known ‘brand’, this experience also looks great on any CV adding further employability skills.

Volunteer Mentors

ProjectScotland (part of the Volunteering Matters Family)
Postcode: AB10 1AB
ProjectScotland supports young people to reach their potential through tailored support, the opportunity to experience the benefits of a volunteering placement themselves and the support of volunteer mentors. This is a national programme which we have recently secured funding to deliver in the Aberdeen area. As a guide -6-month commitment – 1 hour weekly although this will be flexible and may fluctuate to meet mentor and mentee availability, this meeting would ideally be face to face however given the COVID situation many matches are virtual using email/telephone/video chat/WhatsApp. In the role you may be assisting a young person to identify personal goals and aims and support them to work towards these in a planned and thought through way. e.g building self-esteem, feeling more confident in social situations, expressing themselves effectively, recognising personal strengths. In other matches you might be working on softer outcomes such as helping them to develop life skills, routine, planning for the day, managing their time effectively and in many cases just checking in to make sure all is well and they are doing alright. For further information please contact Emma Hanlon, Mentor Manager at email: emma.hanlon@volunteeringmatters.org.uk or tel.: 07746938237.

This wonderful railway is operated entirely by volunteers and maintenance work to keep this railway in top shape has not stopped during the pandemic. Throughout the year a vast programme of work is undertaken by volunteers, ranging from working on the track, running the trains to rolling stock maintenance and building maintenance… and the list goes on. In fact, many of our volunteers try their hand at most of these various jobs as and when required – and a significant number started volunteering without having specialist skills in these areas in the first place. If you would like to lend a hand at the Railway, spend some time doing something truly hands-on, let us know.

NHSGGC Mobile Hub Volunteers - serving complimentary hot drinks to NHS staff

NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde
Postcode: G3 8SJ
NHSGGC serves a population of 1.14 million and employs around 39,000 staff – it is the largest NHS organisation in Scotland and one of the largest in the UK. As management of the on-going COVID-19 pandemic enters a new phase, we are looking to engage the skills of our volunteers in different ways than usual. In response to the pressures of the pandemic, NHSGGC have developed a mobile staff Rest & Recuperation Hub to support staff wellbeing. The mobile hub will visit all six Health & Social Care Partnerships in the NHSGGC area on a rotational basis. The hubs provide a staff only area with complimentary hot drinks and a place to eat, rest and take time away from work. The mobile hub should in many ways replicate the success of our R&R Hubs our 5 main Acute sites. The purpose of the volunteer role is to support the effective running of the Hub and to provide a warm welcome to staff and visitors making use of the space. 1) Welcome all staff members coming to the Mobile HUB 2) Engage with staff by chatting and providing a listening ear where appropriate 3) Help manage the HUB space, keeping it clean and tidy 4) Prepare and serve complimentary refreshments 5) Manage stock such as newspapers and snacks to ensure an adequate supply at different times of the day 6) Help foster a relaxed and welcoming environment We ask that volunteers are able to commit to at least one session (4 hours) per week on an 8 week rotation, during the following time periods; Monday to Friday 9.30am- 1.30pm 12.00pm-4.00pm The mobile hub will rotate around East Renfrewshire, Renfrewshire, Inverclyde, West Dunbartonshire, Glasgow City and East Dunbartonshire. You can attend the location closest to you (once every 8 weeks) and/or travel to help on the mobile hub in other locations. An application and interview process will help us to find the right volunteer. Should your application be successful we will check that you are well enough to volunteer via NHSGGC occupational health. You must be able to supply us with two references. If you are interested please click the ‘Apply’ button below (available when logged in and registered). You will then be contacted by the coordinator by email or phone call. If you have not heard back after 5 working days, the first step is to contact the organisation with the contact details provided. You could also check your junk/spam folder on your emails just in case the response is there. If that doesn’t work out then please feel free to contact Volunteer Glasgow on info@volunteerglasgow.org.

Ability Borders SCIO
Postcode: TD1 1BT
The Community Connectors service will operate throughout the Scottish Borders to provide a service to people who have a Personal Alarm but do not have local friends or family who can respond to them if they need assistance at home. The service relies on volunteers from the local community to attend alarm calls through an informal relationship with the alarm client. When an alarm call in made it is received by trained Operators in the Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC). Wherever possible the Operators try to resolve the call by providing an appropriate telephone based response. Where it is not possible to resolve the call over the phone, they will contact Community Connector volunteers to check on and reassure the caller by attending to them at home. Sometimes, alarms may be set off by accident. In this case the volunteer will be on hand to provide reassurance and to reset the alarm. Volunteers are required from local communities across the Scottish Borders. Volunteers will be required to: • attend alarm calls, providing reassurance to service users • Provide any help as necessary where able to safely do so • report back to necessary professionals (e.g. Alarm receiving Centre or emergency services)

Home Visitor

Home-Start East Fife
Postcode: KY16 9EQ
Volunteers help to increase confidence and independence in families by offering support, friendship and practical help. They visit families in their own homes in order to protect and respect each individual’s dignity and identity. A relationship then develops in which understanding and trust can grow. Volunteers often reassure families that difficulties in bringing up children are not unusual, emphasise the positive aspects of family life, encourage parents strengths and emotional well-being and encourage the family to widen their network and effectively use the support and services available in the community. A volunteer may choose to offer support to more than one family and is supported throughout by a co-ordinator. A Preparation Course is delivered in a fun and rewarding environment. Owing to the ongoing pandemic some training and support may be delivered remotely i.e. phone/video calls, outdoor visits etc. Further guidance will be provided as part of induction.

Volunteer Driver

Forth Valley Sensory Centre- Stirling
Postcode: FK1 4DD
What’s involved •This role is currently paused due to the pandemic as the Centre is closed, however we are looking to build up our list of volunteer drivers in anticipation of restarting our activities. •Sight loss can leave people isolated and public transport is often a barrier for people with sight loss. We aim to overcome this by providing people with sight loss with transport that allows them to access our many activities. The principal task is to collect blind and partially sighted Centre users from their homes and assist them to get into the Centre. This may involve guiding people with a visual impairment and full training will be given for this. Centre users are coming in to access one of the groups or activities that we offer, as a volunteer driver you can stay for the group or come back after a couple of hours for the return journey. Occasionally groups go out for afternoon tea or to visit local visitor attractions.

One-to-One Peer Befriender

West Dunbartonshire CVS
Postcode: G81 1UJ
Across West Dunbartonshire, many people live alone and can often feel isolated. The reasons for this will be varied - they may have difficulty leaving the house alone, have no close family or friends, or have lost confidence after illness or a life-change. In every case, what is missing is someone like you. Everyone gets older and we are living longer. It can become harder to make new friends and connections as we leave work, grow apart, see family move away and deal with health issues. The aim of the APEL initiative is to support people to feel they are involved in their communities and build their confidence to be as active as they can - we need your help to make it happen. With your help, someone in our community could feel supported, less alone and more able to get out and about. If this sounds like you, all we ask is a few hours every week of your time, over a year. We will be here to provide any help and support you need. In return you will have the satisfaction that your support has made all the difference in someone else’s life. Please help us. You will understand that for everyone safety you will be asked to go through a PVG (police) check. Due to Covid we have had to have a flexible approach to our opportunities depending on the restrictions Open for recruitment and placement

Assistant Beaver Leader - Rosewell

South East Scotland Scouts
Postcode: EH24 9AT
This vacancy is to provide exciting indoor and outdoor activities for girls and boys aged 6-8 years old. To provide the best Scouting experience and continuity for our young people in Rosewell we need volunteers, in particular a Tuesday Assistant Beaver Leader.

Grassroots Campaigner

RESULTS UK
Postcode: EH6 5EQ
Are you passionate about ending global poverty? Do you have a couple of hours a month spare? Do you want to meet like-minded people? Do you want to gain skills in campaigning and advocacy? Then why not join the RESULTS Edinburgh campaign group! RESULTS UK is a movement of passionate, committed, everyday people. Together we use our voices to influence political decisions that we believe will bring an end to poverty, advocating on issues such as global health and education. Our campaign groups are connected by a passion to end poverty and to take action to influence political decisions. There are 13 campaign groups, and many individual campaigners, who make up the RESULTS UK grassroots network. Each month our campaigners take a well-researched campaign action, which is sent out in our action materials. The 'Call to action' each month is often to write and engage with, MPs and Government Ministers. Who you write to depends on who the RESULTS UK policy and parliamentary teams think you can influence the most! There are often also prompts for taking action on social media or local media. Our recent campaigns include global COVID-19 vaccine equity, effective nutrition programmes and an ongoing campaign to save the UK Overseas Development Assistance (ODA, often known as aid) budget! As well as taking monthly actions, the Edinburgh group regularly joins our monthly conference calls. We discuss the focus of that month's campaign action, and hear an update from around the network. We also welcome an expert guest speaker on the topic of the month. The calls are a great opportunity to learn about international development, ask questions, and connect with other campaigners. It is an exciting time to get involved, meet likeminded people, and join a network of passionate campaigners across the UK! Check out our Welcome Pack for an overview of what getting involved is all about: https://www.results.org.uk/guides/welcome-pack-volunteers Email us at join@results.org.uk. We'd Love to hear from you!"

Versus Arthritis
Postcode: IV30 1BU
Scotland Versus Arthritis is looking for individuals willing to lead short health walks in your area, lead on other physical activities, or facilitate virtual support groups. Full training and on-going support for volunteers will be available. We are also looking for expressions of interest from anyone keen to become an instructor of Tai Chi or Qi Gong for arthritis. The current Covid restrictions have meant that for many the wait for treatment may be a year or more away. Painkilling prescriptions are seldom more than a temporary relief. Support and exercise can however offer a better way to self manage the daily on-going pain and fatigue. In readiness for the eventual lifting of lockdown we are asking, can you spare an hour or two each month to help? Please contact your local Development Officer, Dr. P. Neville, p.neville@versusarthritis.org or phone 07501 501114 for details.

We really need your help so we can keep our promise to the more than 1.8million children who rely on a nutritious daily meal at school from Mary’s Meals, especially as Covid-19 has hit many developing countries so hard. We are looking for people who are passionate about ending child hunger and ensuring that every child receives a daily meal in a place of education. We have a range of activities that can be done from the comfort of your home, while Covid-19 restrictions are in place. They include: hosting virtual talks, spreading the word about our work on social media or holding screenings of our inspiring videos with family and friends. If you don’t mind public speaking, we can also train you to visit schools, Rotary Clubs and other local organisations to give talks virtually and generate support for our cause.

Assistant Cub Leader - various locations

South East Scotland Scouts
Postcode: EH23 4TT
Are you interested in becoming an Assistant Cub Leader at one of our cub packs in Midlothian. It provides the opportunity to run games and activities, but with slightly less involvement than a full leader. An assistant leader attends (almost) every week to help with whatever the group is doing but if you are a do-er and give it a go-er please consider the Section Lead role. Do you enjoy interacting with young people? Are you a team player with a positive, can-do attitude? Do you enjoy fun activities – from athletics to astronomy form photography to pioneering? Do you want to do more? Then this is right up a your street. What can you do? Our Cub Packs are thriving in that we have lots of young people however what we don’t have is the volunteer leaders in order to function. You can play a pivotal role. Without a Cub Pack, our Beavers may have nowhere to move on to when they reach the age and there would be nobody to feed new members into our Scout section either. The existing Cubs may not be able to fully embrace the Cub Scouts opportunity. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, demand for Scouting remains strong but we can only continue (and grow) with your help. This is your chance to make a lasting difference and use your personal skills to help young people gain theirs as a Scout Maker. And volunteering goes both ways – you can benefit too. Like this sound of this? Cubs is packed full of amazing activities to engage and challenge Cub Scouts of all abilities.

You'll start by identifying the training needs for the person concerned and agreeing a Personal Learning Plan (PLP), planning how these needs can be met, validate training and possibly presenting some key modules as part of your learning or skills presentations. You will work with a wider experienced Training Team to support our learners. The ultimate goal is to help our adult leaders secure their 'Wood Badge' which you'd play a pivotal role as this will mean they can deliver the best scouting experience for our young people today and tomorrow. Our training is award-winning and you have the chance to be part of this amazing experience - learning and growing as you go. We are looking for new faces to join our expanding training team in line with our recovery post covid and ongoing growth.

Participant Midlothian Voices Collective Advocacy Project

CAPS Independent Advocacy
Postcode: EH3 9DR
Midlothian Voices is a Collective advocacy group of people in Midlothian who identify as having Mental Health issues. CAPS facilitate their group to enable them to come together to achieve their goals. The group is fairly new but since getting together as the end of last year they have identified three goals for the group to work on: To engage with services at a strategic level by attending meetings and events where decision making happens, to work on topic specific issues that are important to people such as Welfare Reform and reducing stigma and to bring people in Midlothian together around these issues. So far members of the group have attended Lothian wide events on Human Rights and the reform of the Scottish Health Council and have looked at how these issues are relevant in Midlothian and fed back through the Mental Health Strategy group on their thoughts. They have also been part of a sit down with the Minister for Mental Health at the NHS annual conference to ask questions about Mental Health services in Midlothian Midlothian voices describe themselves as a go-getting friendly group and have many ideas on issues they would like to work on in the future, they are very much looking forward to welcoming new members of the group and generating new ideas. Individuals can get involved in the project at a level that suits their own abilities, skills and commitments. Meetings usually take place every six weeks. Due to Covid 19 CAPS we have had to alter the way we work. Groups and volunteer roles are currently taking place online until we can resume face to face meetings.

Telephone Befriender

Voluntary Action South Ayrshire
Postcode: KA7 1QJ
Your role as the Telephone Befriender is to engage in conversation with a client over the phone, building a rapport and engaging with them on a weekly basis (note: some befriending matches require more than one call per week). Most of the referrals come from our partners and other agencies but some are self-referrals. All referrals are due to the client being lonely and feeling isolated. It should be noted, that does not necessarily mean they are an older person living on their own. Some referrals are for younger adults who may live in a ‘busy’ household. As a Befriender your co-ordinator will match you to a suitable client. This will be done after finding out more about both yourself and the client to see if there are similarities in personality, hobbies etc. It will not be done purely on age – often the perfect match is with different generations. Your role will be to chat to the client, using your own phone from your own home. You will be required to actively engage and encourage conversation – sometimes this needs to be led by you, the volunteer, as there could be barriers with the clients such as: confidence, disability, speech issues etc. The Telephone Befriender will not be expected to offer advice or to ‘counsel’ the client – you are simply someone to have a chat to and be a listening ear – something for the client to look forward to each week. Befrienders should give minimal personal details about themselves and should never ‘off-load’ their own issues to a client. Your coordinator will always be there to deal with any concerns you have about any of your matches. VASA induction training will be given and guidelines issued around safety protocols for volunteers and clients. Workshops will be available from time to time to cover areas of interest around Befriending. A PVG check will be carried out prior to commencement as a befriender. It should be noted that this role does not include any face-to-face befriending and no volunteer should arrange to meet with a client. Post COVID, if a one-to-one, face-to-face service was developed, appropriate training would be given then if deemed applicable. DUTIES: The role of the Telephone Befriender will be as follows: • To offer friendship and encouragement, via a telephone call, to a client who is isolated and lonely. • To provide a listening ear. • To facilitate conversation and engage with clients. • To build up a relationship with the befriendee, giving them something to look forward to on a weekly basis. • To commit to a minimum of 20min per week to the service.
