Sight Scotland and Sight Scotland Veterans

Many blind and partially-sighted people are already quite isolated due to their visual impairment and the pandemic has only made things that much harder. However, a weekly phone call or a cup of tea with a volunteer befriender could help provide a vital social connection for veterans with sight loss. If you love a relaxed, friendly chat on the phone and if the idea of doing this whilst also making a genuine impact as a volunteer sounds too good to be true … read on. Our members tell us that their regular check-ins and chats or visits with someone at Sight Scotland Veterans are something they look forward to. Sometimes they can even be a lifeline. Just a simple phone call once a week can make the difference that helps one of our members overcome the effects of isolation and loneliness. We need a friendly and naturally chatty home-based volunteer who can check in regularly with our members by phone, take some time to make sure they are doing OK, and fill them in with all the latest gossip at Sight Scotland Veterans. You will never be cold calling, there’s no pressure and nothing to sell. We will only ask you to call signed-up Sight Scotland Veterans members who we know will be only too happy to hear from you. Boys Brigade Volunteers

Boys Brigade Aberdeen
Postcode: AB10 1JJ
The Boys’ Brigade is the oldest uniformed youth organisation in the country. We promote habits which leads young people to be good all round citizens, through an extensive programme. It is rewarding and an honour to watch 5 year old shy children grown into confident young adults, ready to play their part in society. With Covid-19 rules many Companies are looking for additional volunteers to help run the different Sections separately. Helping out in a BB group with children and young people can make all the difference to young lives – meaning happier young people, happier communities and a society that values the contribution that we can all make; young, old or in-between. We call our volunteers “leaders” because they guide a course for children and young people. *What do volunteers do? There are lots of different ways that you can help. We work with boys and girls from all backgrounds and of all faiths, and with those with no faith. Most of our volunteers come along for a couple of hours a week in the evening and get involved with one or more of our four age sections: Anchors, Juniors, Company, Seniors. We need volunteers to help children with activities, games, sport, arts and crafts, hobbies, music etc. Whatever you can help with is greatly valued. We also want volunteers who will be able to relate to young people and over time, become adults they can trust and talk to. *I can't help every week, do you still want me? Yes! The beauty of volunteering with the BB is that you can be flexible, and if you can only help out once a month, or even once a year at the annual camp then we are happy to welcome you. *What is the age limit? You can volunteer from 14+ as a Young Leader, with a wider range of roles for those aged 18+. There’s no upper age limit. We really do welcome applications from all ages. *Do I have to be Christian? Some churches where BB groups are based like leaders to be members of that church, but are happy that certain roles are performed by people who are in sympathy with the Christian basis of the BB. Other than that, we welcome volunteers from all backgrounds and cultures. There are BB groups in and around Aberdeen, looking for volunteers, from Cove to Balmedie, Powis, Northfield, Woodside and the Bridge of Don, and everywhere in between. There will be a group near you who will welcome and greatly appreciate your help. A fantastic opportunity to help and make a real difference for people and communities. For further information please contact Andy Cowie at email: acowie999@btinternet.com or tel.: 01224 7903248 / 07715279478.

However, sometimes due to situations out of their control, young people face challenges that make it more difficult for them to succeed. That’s why providing the simple support of a mentor is so important and has been proven to make a life-changing difference. This is where you can help… MCR recruits and trains volunteer mentors who are matched with a young person that shares similar interests, hobbies or career aspirations. Mentors meet with their young person at their school for just one hour per week and the difference this makes is transformational. The mentoring relationship is unique as young people establish a friendship with someone who’s there, just for them and is not a teacher, parent, guardian or counsellor. The impact on their life is huge. Recent ScotCen research shows 81.6% of mentored care-experienced pupils left school for college, university or a job, compared with 56.3% of those young people not being mentored. We are hoping to help even more young people in the area reach their potential and are seeking volunteer mentors at Lochside Academy, Aberdeen. The only qualification you need to be a mentor is the desire to help. All young people are different and have different needs, so it’s important that our mentors come from all walks of life. Volunteer mentors are asked to commit just one hour a week for a minimum of one year and will be fully trained and PVG checked before being matched with a young person. The building of the relationship with a young person is facilitated by our fantastic MCR Pathways Coordinators who are based in each school and work with our young people on a daily basis. We’re asking you to #BeTheBridge between a young person’s talent and life possibilities. For only one hour per week, you can change a life. Why not do something to make a difference that lasts a lifetime. All help is greatly appreciated.

Assistant Beaver Leader - Penicuik

South East Scotland Scouts
Postcode: EH26 8JB
This vacancy is to provide exciting indoor and outdoor activities for girls and boys aged 6-8 years old. Scouts is both a young persons and adults experience – making friends, trying something new, doing something good for both your community and yourself and importantly making memories. It’s adventurous and rewarding. This Scouting adventure is only possible thanks to our superstar volunteers - ordinary people, like YOU, making an extraordinary difference to young people’s lives. The Assistant Beaver Leader role is one of the most popular choices as you can help with whatever the group is doing. To provide the best Scouting experience and continuity for our young people in Penicuik we need volunteers, in particular a Thursday Assistant Beaver Leader. Do you enjoy interacting with young people? Are you a team player with a positive, can-do attitude? Do you enjoy fun activities – from athletics to astronomy form photography to pioneering? Do you want to do more? Then this is right up your street. What can you do? You can play a pivotal role. Without a Beaver Colony, there would be nobody to feed new members into our Cub pack either. The existing Beavers may not be able to fully embrace the Beaver Scouts opportunity. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, demand for Scouting remains strong but we can only continue (and grow) with your help. This is your chance to make a difference and use your personal skills to help young people gain theirs as a Scout Maker. And volunteering goes both ways – you can benefit too. Like this sound of this? Beavers is packed full of amazing activities to engage and challenge Beaver Scouts of all abilities. From camps, water activities, nature walks, cooking, crafts, sport and so on. This is only possible thanks to our team of adult volunteers. We help volunteers get the most out of their experiences at Scouts by providing opportunities and support as part of team of like-minded individuals. Our approach focuses on what you want to get out of volunteering with Scouts, while respecting how much time you can offer. As Scouts is a well-known ‘brand’, this experience also looks great on any CV adding further employability skills.

Volunteer Mentors

ProjectScotland (part of the Volunteering Matters Family)
Postcode: AB10 1AB
ProjectScotland supports young people to reach their potential through tailored support, the opportunity to experience the benefits of a volunteering placement themselves and the support of volunteer mentors. This is a national programme which we have recently secured funding to deliver in the Aberdeen area. As a guide -6-month commitment – 1 hour weekly although this will be flexible and may fluctuate to meet mentor and mentee availability, this meeting would ideally be face to face however given the COVID situation many matches are virtual using email/telephone/video chat/WhatsApp. In the role you may be assisting a young person to identify personal goals and aims and support them to work towards these in a planned and thought through way. e.g building self-esteem, feeling more confident in social situations, expressing themselves effectively, recognising personal strengths. In other matches you might be working on softer outcomes such as helping them to develop life skills, routine, planning for the day, managing their time effectively and in many cases just checking in to make sure all is well and they are doing alright. For further information please contact Emma Hanlon, Mentor Manager at email: emma.hanlon@volunteeringmatters.org.uk or tel.: 07746938237.

Scotland Versus Arthritis is looking for individuals willing to lead short health walks in your area, lead on other physical activities, or facilitate virtual support groups. Full training and on-going support for volunteers will be available. We are also looking for expressions of interest from anyone keen to become an instructor of Tai Chi or Qi Gong for arthritis. The current Covid restrictions have meant that for many the wait for treatment may be a year or more away. Painkilling prescriptions are seldom more than a temporary relief. Support and exercise can however offer a better way to self-manage the daily on-going pain and fatigue. In readiness for the eventual lifting of lockdown we are asking, can you spare an hour or two each month to help? Please contact your local Development Officer, Dr. P. Neville, p.neville@versusarthritis.org or phone 07501 501114 for details.

If you have more time to spare, you can steward at another traffic point, or spend a few hours at the Harbour or High Street at a barrier point. The parade stops at a number of points on the route. Cockenzie Harbour sees the children board local fishing vessels for a battle between the sailors and pirates as they sail to Port Seton Harbour. Outside the Thorntree our Fishergirls perform a traditional dance. It's a Gala like no other - come and join us.

Child Contact Centre Volunteer

Relationships Scotland (Scottish Borders)
Postcode: TD1 1DQ
Volunteers work with our Duty Officers to help bring families experiencing difficulties back together. Children and parents naturally belong together but there are often barriers to overcome. From broken marriages/relationships to estranged parents/grandparents to parents rehabilitating from jail or addiction. We believe that positive and healthy relationships are at the heart of a successful and vibrant Scotland. Relationships are under greater pressure than ever before, with family breakdown costing the Scottish economy around £3 billion each year. (Relationships Foundation – Cost of Family Breakdown Index 2013) One in five couples in Scotland experienced significant relationship difficulties during lockdown and 6% of couples decided to separate. (Census-wide research undertaken on behalf of Relationships Scotland and Relate, 2020). Scottish Government research found that many organisations had a significant increase in referrals from women experiencing domestic abuse and mental health difficulties. (Scottish Government, Covid 19: Domestic Abuse and other forms of violence, 18 Sept 2020) Our service receives government funding to assist in keeping children in touch with their families when times are difficult. Role Description : Volunteers assist the Contact Centre Duty Officers to prepare the Centre for families by ensuring a safe space and getting out toys, books etc for them to use. They also help create a warm and social atmosphere which encourages children to relax and enjoy their visit. Volunteers support the contact between children and visiting parents or grandparents. Borders Buddies

Outside the Box (Scottish Borders)
Postcode: EH45 8AG
Give some of your time to support someone in Tweeddale to build their confidence to ‘get back’ post-pandemic. Borders Buddies is a project funded by Scottish Borders Council Tweeddale Community Fund. It was begun because we were hearing from people who were feeling increasingly isolated and disconnected during Lockdown. Some of them had lost touch with friends or groups, some had lost some physical ability. Others had just lost confidence about rejoining groups or getting back to previous activities, even when the rules said it was ok to do this now. We are looking for ‘Buddies’ in the Tweeddale area to befriend people to support them to get back to doing what they would like to do. In some cases this may just involve going round to a garden for a chat every so often. In others it could mean escorting someone to a club or group activity, or even on a bus to do their shopping! You would be fully supported by our relevant policies and risk assessments, and reasonable expenses would be reimbursed. Dates and times to be confirmed. Front of House Volunteers

Elgin Museum
Postcode: IV30 1EQ
Elgin Museum is situated at the far east end of Elgin High Street. It is Scotland’s oldest continuously independent museum and run entirely by volunteers. Would you be interested in joining us, at least initially for front of house duties when we reopen in the Spring? We continue to be mindful of the Covid situation and are also aware of the limitations imposed by the building’s layout. We therefore require mask wearing, hand sanitation and 2m distancing. This very rewarding work includes welcoming visitors, explaining mitigation measures regarding Covid including the one-way system round the Museum. A working knowledge of the displays, or a willingness to learn and ability to explain to visitors how and where to access information, are essential. Looking at the displays and their interpretation is the best way to familiarise yourself – and to ask questions of more seasoned volunteers on duty with you. The ability to serve in the shop, including the use of a (very simple) card reader and to communicate with the front desk via walkie talkie are required. Training will be given in all the above skills with an induction to the Museum’s workings. Volunteers will need to be comfortable and able to work independently after being given initial training. If you feel this volunteering role is for you, please email: curator@elginmuseum.org.uk Preferably attach an application form from the Museum’s web site: https://elginmuseum.org.uk/l/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Elgin-Museum-Volunteer-Application-Form-and-Agreement-pdf-188KB.pdf The Museum’s Volunteer Mentor will then get in touch with you.

Some tasks include: - Providing a safe girl-only space where girls can discover their full potential. - Creating and delivering an accessible and inclusive programme as set out by Girlguiding. - Encouraging and supporting members in decision-making. - Completing relevant training for the role and encouraging other members to develop their skills. - Overseeing unit administration and finance. - Complying with Girlguiding policies and regulations. Currently, all guiding activity is virtual but as restrictions ease, we will operate a blended model, with a mixture of indoor, outdoor and virtual guiding. Keeping our community safe is our top priority. We’re following Scottish Government Coronavirus guidelines closely and adapting as circumstances evolve and restrictions change. All our activities are carefully risk assessed. When you register interest, you’ll be able to discuss which form of guiding is best suited for you going forward.

RESULTS UK
Postcode: EH6 5EQ
Are you passionate about ending global poverty? Do you have a couple of hours a month spare? Do you want to meet like-minded people? Do you want to gain skills in campaigning and advocacy? Then why not join the RESULTS Edinburgh campaign group! RESULTS UK is a movement of passionate, committed, everyday people. Together we use our voices to influence political decisions that we believe will bring an end to poverty, advocating on issues such as global health and education. Our campaign groups are connected by a passion to end poverty and to take action to influence political decisions. There are 13 campaign groups, and many individual campaigners, who make up the RESULTS UK grassroots network. Each month our campaigners take a well-researched campaign action, which is sent out in our action materials. The 'Call to action' each month is often to write and engage with, MPs and Government Ministers. Who you write to depends on who the RESULTS UK policy and parliamentary teams think you can influence the most! There are often also prompts for taking action on social media or local media. Our recent campaigns include global COVID-19 vaccine equity, effective nutrition programmes and an ongoing campaign to save the UK Overseas Development Assistance (ODA, often known as aid) budget! As well as taking monthly actions, the Edinburgh group regularly joins our monthly conference calls. We discuss the focus of that month's campaign action, and hear an update from around the network. We also welcome an expert guest speaker on the topic of the month. The calls are a great opportunity to learn about international development, ask questions, and connect with other campaigners. It is an exciting time to get involved, meet likeminded people, and join a network of passionate campaigners across the UK! Check out our Welcome Pack for an overview of what getting involved is all about: https://www.results.org.uk/guides/welcome-pack-volunteers Email us at join@results.org.uk. One-to-One Peer Befriender

West Dunbartonshire CVS
Postcode: G81 1UJ
Across West Dunbartonshire, many people live alone and can often feel isolated. The reasons for this will be varied - they may have difficulty leaving the house alone, have no close family or friends, or have lost confidence after illness or a life-change. In every case, what is missing is someone like you. Everyone gets older and we are living longer. It can become harder to make new friends and connections as we leave work, grow apart, see family move away and deal with health issues. The aim of the APEL initiative is to support people to feel they are involved in their communities and build their confidence to be as active as they can - we need your help to make it happen. With your help, someone in our community could feel supported, less alone and more able to get out and about. If this sounds like you, all we ask is a few hours every week of your time, over a year. We will be here to provide any help and support you need. In return you will have the satisfaction that your support has made all the difference in someone else’s life. Please help us. You will understand that for everyone safety you will be asked to go through a PVG (police) check. Due to Covid we have had to have a flexible approach to our opportunities depending on the restrictions Open for recruitment and placement

Moray Firth Credit Union
Postcode: IV36 1PB
If you want to give back to your community this is a great way to do it. The Moray Firth Credit Union is seeking people who are interested in the exciting opportunity to serve on their Board. Some longstanding Board members shielded and subsequently retired during ‘lockdown’ in March 2020. The Credit Union has a long history of serving the local community. Formerly the Forres Area Credit Union until 2020) it was set up in 1995 as a response to high unemployment in the Forres area when a nearby Fabrication Yard closed. Today, the main office of the ‘Savings & Loans Co-operative’ is located at 53 High Street Forres, though plans are in the works to to expand and set up ‘satellite’ collection points in other places in Moray as this social enterprise develops. Assistant Cub Leader - various locations

South East Scotland Scouts
Postcode: EH23 4TT
Are you interested in becoming an Assistant Cub Leader at one of our cub packs in Midlothian. It provides the opportunity to run games and activities, but with slightly less involvement than a full leader. An assistant leader attends (almost) every week to help with whatever the group is doing but if you are a do-er and give it a go-er please consider the Section Lead role. Do you enjoy interacting with young people? Are you a team player with a positive, can-do attitude? Do you enjoy fun activities – from athletics to astronomy form photography to pioneering? Do you want to do more? Then this is right up a your street. What can you do? Our Cub Packs are thriving in that we have lots of young people however what we don’t have is the volunteer leaders in order to function. You can play a pivotal role. Without a Cub Pack, our Beavers may have nowhere to move on to when they reach the age and there would be nobody to feed new members into our Scout section either. The existing Cubs may not be able to fully embrace the Cub Scouts opportunity. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, demand for Scouting remains strong but we can only continue (and grow) with your help. This is your chance to make a lasting difference and use your personal skills to help young people gain theirs as a Scout Maker. And volunteering goes both ways – you can benefit too. Like this sound of this? Cubs is packed full of amazing activities to engage and challenge Cub Scouts of all abilities.

We are looking for people who are passionate about ending child hunger and ensuring that every child receives a daily meal in a place of education. We have a range of activities that can be done from the comfort of your home, while Covid-19 restrictions are in place. They include: hosting virtual talks, spreading the word about our work on social media or holding screenings of our inspiring videos with family and friends. Support and exercise can however offer a better way to self manage the daily on-going pain and fatigue. In readiness for the eventual lifting of lockdown we are asking, can you spare an hour or two each month to help? Please contact your local Development Officer, Dr. P. Neville, p.neville@versusarthritis.org or phone 07501 501114 for details.

Yes, we couldn’t deliver Scouting without our TAs! No previous Scouts experience, no problem! This is a non-uniformed volunteering role. And if you aren’t an existing training provider please don’t worry – it’s the passion, interest and relatable skills which count. Role Description : Trainers are key to the volunteer training scheme at the Scouts. Training Advisers (TA) have an essential job in providing support to those undertaking training for their appointment in Scouting. The key role of a TA is to support a learner through The Scouts’ Adult Training Scheme. Our excellent South East Scotland Scouts TA team provide our volunteers with superb assistance, the tools and tips to feel trained, supported and happy in your role. As a TA you will help adults navigate through the training process. You'll start by identifying the training needs for the person concerned and agreeing a Personal Learning Plan (PLP), planning how these needs can be met, validate training and possibly presenting some key modules as part of your learning or skills presentations. You will work with a wider experienced Training Team to support our learners. The ultimate goal is to help our adult leaders secure their 'Wood Badge' which you'd play a pivotal role as this will mean they can deliver the best scouting experience for our young people today and tomorrow. Our training is award-winning and you have the chance to be part of this amazing experience - learning and growing as you go. We are looking for new faces to join our expanding training team in line with our recovery post covid and ongoing growth.

Hearing Aid Support Volunteer

Midlothian Council
Postcode: EH22 1AE
1 in 6 people in Scotland have a hearing impairment . You will know someone who has it, or may have hearing loss yourself. In Midlothian we have recently introduced the hearing aid battery pick up points in all our local libraries. This has been a huge success. It draws people into Libraries, to interact with staff and other members of the community and makes them aware of the wide range of activities which are on offer there. This saves time and money for people, reduces social isolation and eases pressure on the over-stretched staff in Audiology in Edinburgh. It means fewer hearing aids lie unused in drawers, for want of a battery. It really is a win, win. We now want to expand on this by offering repair and maintenance clinics locally too. The replacement of tubing in the hearing aid for example, is required every so often. It is not difficult to do, but it is a bit fiddly, especially for older or disabled people who are a large proportion of hearing aid users. Full training is provided prior to involvement. We have established a clinic which runs on the first Wednesday of every month in Dalkeith Library, 10.30-11.30 am. We also have now established a clinic in Penicuik Town Hall on the last Wednesday of every month 10:30 - 11:30am. If we can recruit more volunteers, we would like to start a clinic in Gorebridge, which would involve a similar monthly commitment. At present due to Covid-19 clinics are suspended but do get in touch if you are interested in this opportunity. Contact will then be made with volunteers once the clinics are re-opened.
