Volunteer Trustees

Zero Waste Aberdeen
Postcode: AB11 5YU
We are a young democratically run organisation that needs to grow. At the moment we are a small group working at projects that reduce waste and we intend that Aberdeen and Shire become zero waste areas. That is, that everything we use becomes part of a circular economy and is not discarded needlessly to be tipped or burned. Currently, our main projects are :- *Go Green Café *Trash to Treasure *Men's Sheds *Planting Fruit Trees for Community Benefit These worthy projects are undertaken alongside family and work commitments but we need to do more if we are to make inroads to the waste we generate each day. That presents exciting opportunities for volunteers. Our next step then, is for more 'Trustees' to join with us to take on an officer of the board role, or to become an ordinary member and help steer the way forward to a successful reduction of waste to zero. If you’re/for more information then please do get in touch with Brian Allan at email brianaltenscc2@gmail.com or tel.: 07751275757.

Good Food Nation Ambassador

A Greener Hawick
Postcode: TD9 8BH
Passionate about a fairer, greener, healthier and more democratic food system? Become a Good Food Nation Ambassador! Scottish Government has committed to new legislation on Scotland’s food system – but it was delayed as a result of COVID-19 pandemic. We need your help to fight for this new law to drive change in our food system. Scotland boasts an incredible larder of food and drink – but what is the truth behind the marketing? The Scottish Food Coalition and A Greener Hawick believe that our food system needs to be fairer, greener healthier and more democratic – that our capacity to feed ourselves should not be compromised for private profit. At the start of the new parliament we are recruiting a Good Food Nation Ambassador to engage with the Hawick community, increase awareness and momentum and campaign for brighter future for Scotland’s food system. Contacting candidates via phone, email or social media and ask them what they will do to address the challenges in our food system. Organising workshops to support local people to helping to ‘debunk’ questions, and supporting people to get their voices heard. Collecting stories from your community to illustrate the change we need to see in our food system. Working with existing local networks, with support from the Scottish Food Coalition, to publicise issues and recommendations locally, via social media, websites, press etc.

The Board currently comprises three individuals with a combined background in project management; mechanics; craft; research; teaching; and community event organising. Clachworks is in its ‘start up’ phase and is yet to begin operating. Over the past year the Board’s energy has been focused on developing an outline business plan and fundraising strategy; conducting market research and community consultations; and negotiating the intended premises. We are nearing the conclusion of these negotiations and hope to be in the space by late Spring 2022. As a fellow company director, joining at a crucial stage of the organisation, you will play an integral role in turning our vision into a reality. Clachworks also welcomes applications from people with additional capacity who may like to be more fully involved in the project. Time commitment is a big question for most people when thinking about joining a board of directors. Community Monitoring Volunteer

Berwickshire Marine Reserve
Postcode: TD14 5HS
New citizen science project recording the presence and abundance of marine species present on the rocky shore to allow for long-term monitoring of this habitat. We have partnered with NatureScot, along with other voluntary organisations around Scotland, to contribute to a growing database on the health of coastal intertidal habitats. This is the first year the BMR has been involved with the programme. From this year we are aiming to obtain a baseline of data and will achieve this through undertaking rocky shore intertidal assessments at 4 study sites (St Abbs, Coldingham Bay, Milldown & Killiedraughts beach). Intertidal rocky shore community monitoring will be undertaken four times per year to gain insight into the seasonal changes of fauna and flora present in the reserve. Each year we aim to build upon the data, creating a long-term data set of (potentially) changing diversity. Analysis of the presence and abundance of fauna and flora can be compared to the temperature logging records to reveal any (potential) relationships. Data collected will also be fed back to NatureScot and shared with the relevant organisations.

Location: Online/ face to face, all across Scotland Time required: 4 hours per week Commitment: Minimum 6 months Online Training provided This is an opportunity for someone with passion, commitment and drive to make a big difference to the way Scotland/your locality responds to climate change. The Scottish Communities Climate Action Network (SCCAN) is partnering with Climate for Change (C4C) to launch a brand new climate engagement program for Scotland – Climate Conversations. You will be one of our first facilitators and help SCCAN kickstart our program in Scotland. Facilitators are our agents of change. As a facilitator you will be part of a team that together will inspire hundreds of people throughout Scotland to stand up on climate change and move society and our leaders to action. About Climate Conversations Since 2015, Climate for Change has pioneered the Climate Conversations model. Using a party-plan model of small gatherings in people’s homes, a facilitator leads a discussion about climate change. Each Conversation generates leads for at least one more, resulting in built-in growth. This is a unique model within the climate movement that allows both deep engagement and exponential growth. C4C’s 2020 Impact Report demonstrates Climate Conversations is a uniquely powerful engagement tool within the climate movement, successful in reaching audiences that others have historically found challenging – especially the “wavering middle” – and in educating and empowering thousands of individuals to take action on climate. Further information is available at C4C’s website: www.climateforchange.org.au Position Summary This is an exciting role for you to use your love of working with people to empower the community, and to drive a groundswell of community action on climate change. You will work with volunteer hosts who will invite 8 – 12 friends and family to attend a Climate Conversation online or in their home. At these events, you will present to them about climate change (using our prepared scripts), the urgency for action and facilitate discussion that leads to a commitment to take more effective action. Our mission is to create the social climate for effective climate action in Scotland. Key Responsibilities  Imparting the urgency and scale of climate change to the people invited by the friends and family of each host  Inspiring attendees to commit to taking effective action on climate change  Attending monthly Ongoing Facilitator Training (1 hour?)  Recruiting more people to join as hosts and facilitators  Administration and record keeping of your Conversations  Maintaining our a host database and your own activity spreadsheet  Evaluating Conversations and providing feedback for improvement Main Beneficiary or Client Group Communities Please provide a more specific client description (if appropriate) Key Selection Criteria  Passion for solving climate change  Positive attitude, responsible and reliable  Able to foster a welcoming and positive atmosphere  Enjoy working with, supporting and empowering people  Confident with leading a group discussion independently  Engaging communication skills  Professional administration and organisation skills  Connection with a local community group is desirable but not essential. Maybe this is a way to start one if there isn’t already a group in your area  Be or become a member of SCCAN. We welcome both individuals and organisations. You can join here via short form: https://www.scottishcommunitiescan.org.uk/join-us/

The Aberdeen City Council Ranger Service is expanding its highly successful volunteer ranger programme. We are recruiting committed and enthusiastic individuals to assist the Ranger Service at a variety of sites around the city. However if you only want to work in your local area, or if you are only interested in certain volunteer tasks, we are happy to only contact you when a relevant opportunity arises. We are also happy for people to join one of our sessions on a “taster” basis before committing long term. If you are interested in using this opportunity towards a John Muir Award, Duke of Edinburgh Award, Saltire Award or any other qualification please just let us know and we can see what we can do to help. KLSB Community Volunteer (Larbert, Stenhousemuir and surrounding areas)

The KLSB Community Group (Keeping Larbert and Stenhousemuir Beautiful)
Postcode: FK5 4HD
The KLSB Community Group was formed in 2018 after it was identified that there was a need for a local group in the area to help tackle issues including food insecurities, social welfare, support and general community wellbeing. We started as a small litter picking group where we gained support from local residents, groups and businesses. Since those early days we have now become a registered Scottish charity who operate a food pantry, a support hub and we are also in the process of bringing a large community garden to the area. We continue to work in the community by bringing colour to our public gardens as well as our micro gardens which can be found throughout our area. Poverty affects millions of people in the UK. Poverty means not being able to heat your home, pay your rent, or buy the essentials for your children. It means waking up every day facing insecurity, uncertainty, and impossible decisions about money. It means facing marginalisation - and even discrimination - because of your financial circumstances. The constant stress it causes can lead to problems that deprive people of the chance to play a full part in society. We operate a community food pantry in King Street, Stenhousemuir where Falkirk residents can join, and be entitled to a weekly shopping at a much reduced cost. We also operate a food bank where we take referrals from local authorities and groups such as church groups, councillors, doctors, schools, Support for People, Self-Isolation Support & Social Workers. We provide this range of services with help from many local volunteers and we offer you the chance to join us, we are an enthusiastic and welcoming team who work together to make a positive impact on our community, volunteer tasks include: - planting and maintaining local green spaces, including our flowering planters - helping out at the Food Pantry by serving pantry users, organising and sorting food items, keeping the area clean and tidy - helping out at events or at our Community Hub where our other community groups are welcomed to host their own meetings and get-togethers, free of charge

Shorewatch Volunteer

Whale and Dolphin Conservation (Shetland)
Postcode: ZE1 0JP
The Shorewatch citizen science project is a network of volunteers trained and supported by WDC to carry out regular 10-minute surveys from Shorewatch sites across Scotland. We know that Scotland is home to a number of whale and dolphin species, yet there are still so many unanswered questions about where they breed, feed and travel. We believe it is important to keep eyes on the sea so we can better understand these amazing creatures to better protect them. To become a Shorewatch volunteer, you will attend a full day training session where you will learn how to identify different species of cetacean, and how to carry out a 10-minute Shorewatch. You’ll then be fully supported by our Northern Isles Policy Officer in carrying out your first few watches from one of our selected sites – in Shetland these are Mousa Sound, Eshaness Lighthouse, Sumburgh Head Lighthouse, Lerwick (the Knab), Belmont (Unst) and South Nesting Bay. All of the equipment you need to carry out the 10-minute survey will be accessible at each site. Understanding the movements of whales, dolphins and porpoises will allow us to comprehend how our behaviours affect them. We can use the data we gather to influence policy makers and advise developers to ensure better protection for whales and dolphins. Shorewatch relies on our amazing community volunteers to collect this vital data.

You would be volunteering alongside a dedicated I Bike Officer in schools, supporting activities for children such as learn to cycle, playground cycle skills, led bike rides, led walks, bike maintenance and much more! What could be better than helping children to ride their bike without stabilisers for the first time? Hear from some of our fantastic volunteers via our website link below. We advocate for volunteering for all - please talk to us if you have any accessibility requirements or other specific requirements.

Great Yellow Bumblebee Preservation project - Harris

Volunteer Centre Western Isles
Postcode: HS3 3BG
I would like to have the volunteers thinking about the environment we live in and trying to protect the Great Yellow Bumblebee while doing so. They would be learning all about the Bee and how essential all bees are for the worlds food consumption. When the project has completed for the year, i would like to be able to show the various volunteers/groups where their pots have gone and prove to them that volunteering alongside lots of different people can make a big impact on the environment. I hope this would encourage them to continue the planting and flowering in the coming years. I hope to bring a few volunteer groups together while doing this project. Lone parents, young adults, elderly island residents & incorporate family volunteering along with the local children in the schools both in the South and North Harris.
