Zero Waste Aberdeen
Postcode: AB11 5YU
We are a young democratically run organisation that needs to grow. At the moment we are a small group working at projects that reduce waste and we intend that Aberdeen and Shire become zero waste areas. That is, that everything we use becomes part of a circular economy and is not discarded needlessly to be tipped or burned. Currently, our main projects are :- *Go Green Café *Trash to Treasure *Men's Sheds *Planting Fruit Trees for Community Benefit These worthy projects are undertaken alongside family and work commitments but we need to do more if we are to make inroads to the waste we generate each day. That presents exciting opportunities for volunteers. Our next step then, is for more 'Trustees' to join with us to take on an officer of the board role, or to become an ordinary member and help steer the way forward to a successful reduction of waste to zero. If you’re/for more information then please do get in touch with Brian Allan at email brianaltenscc2@gmail.com or tel.: 07751275757.

Orkney International Science Festival
Postcode: KW15 1SJ
Established in 1991 with strong support from the Islands Council and the community, Orkney International Science Festival is one of the oldest science festivals outside Edinburgh. Now in its 34th year, it has built a reputation for programme quality, with past speakers including Jane Goodall and Nobel laureate Peter Higgs. The Festival has strong community involvement, and successfully hosted projects like the Moon installation in 2018, and the SUN Installation in 2023 which drew over 14,000 visitors in 7days. The Festival’s success has been made possible by the help of many skilled and enthusiastic volunteers based locally and also from elsewhere in the UK. Their presence allowed us to expand our programme of events and attract audiences, particularly aiding in the recovery from the challenges posed by Covid in previous years. There are opportunities for volunteers across every aspect of the Festival, from general support to technical assistance. Key activities include the following (but not limited to): • Helping with arrangements at the venues and managing event logistics • Moving and setting up staging and audio/visual equipment. • Assisting with technical support during the event, including assistance with roving and speaker microphones • Assisting speakers, performers and artist. • Assisting attendees, including directing them to seating or facilities. • Distributing materials or resources, such as programmes and feedback forms. • Assisting Door/Front of House team with Onsite ticketing and Family Day activities. • Ensuring adherence to health and safety protocols throughout the event. • Collaborating with the team to ensure smooth execution of the event. • Conducting post-event cleanup and ensuring the venue is left in good condition. • Handling any on-the-spot changes or emergencies that may arise. Volunteers will have the opportunity to be part of a team and gain networking opportunities with event speakers and attendees from various backgrounds within the science and event management community. A volunteer involved in the onsite event assistant role would gain valuable experience in event coordination and technical support. Additionally, they would gain insights into the behind-the-scenes operations of organising a successful event, and gain exposure to diverse scientific topics and presentations. The 2024 Orkney International Science Festival will run from Thursday 5th September through to Wednesday 11th September, with events running anytime between 9am and 11pm. Coastal Environmental Action Programme

Berwickshire Marine Reserve
Postcode: TD14 5HT
Volunteering with the BMR includes a variety of activities and citizen science projects. Our events are usually held on a Wednesday morning and there may be some weekend events as well. We run our ‘Beachwatch’ programme in collaboration with the Marine Conservation Society which involves carrying out a beach clean and recording all of the litter that is picked up. This is a great opportunity to visit the scenic beaches found in the BMR as well as leave the space clean and safe for all. We work with Whale and Dolphin Conservation to carry out ‘Shorewatches’ at the 2 designated sites in the BMR. This is a fantastic opportunity to see some of the marine mammals that pass through the Reserve such as minke whales, bottlenose dolphins, and harbour porpoises. We provide full training for our ‘Intertidal Marine Monitoring Project’ which involves surveying species found in the intertidal zone at 3 different locations within the BMR. The data gathered from this is shared with Nature Scot and other relevant organisations to see the variance in species found during the different seasons and years, as well as keep track of any invasive species which could threaten our coasts. We also hold numerous events with partners such as British Divers Marine Life Rescue and talks hosted by local experts about the life that can be found and the geology of the coast. During the summer we organise walks with local experts along the coastal path which is a great chance to learn more about the history of the area as well as the nesting birds which visit the Reserve each year.

Garden Club Volunteer

Hospitalfield Arts
Postcode: DD11 2NH
Get involved with Garden Club In 2021 Hospitalfield’s Walled Garden, designed by the horticulturalist Nigel Dunnett, opened to the public. The scheme was developed to reveal the unique horticultural history of the site at Hospitalfield, which has been tended as a garden for over 800 years. The garden and grounds at Hospitalfield are maintained, made fruitful and more beautiful with the fantastic support of our volunteers who meet regularly at Garden Club. Garden Club support the development of the garden from helping weed the gardens, sowing seeds, potting up plants and assisting with seasonal projects. Our next garden project is the development of the medicinal garden. The site at Hospitalfield has been populated since the 13th century when the monks who ran Arbroath Abbey established their hotel or hospital, here where we believe that they must have grown a medicinal garden and brewed potions as medicines to improve the health and wellbeing of those who they cared for. From January 2023 we are inviting a medicinal plant specialist to design the garden with Garden Club volunteers, Hospitalfield’s grounds keeping team and soon to be appointed Community Gardener. The new medicinal garden will be planted in a large area within the walled garden at Hospitalfield. As part of our upcoming Garden Club sessions we’ll be planning, preparing, and planting this new medicinal garden. Garden Club Volunteers meet regularly from 10am to 12pm on Fridays at Hospitalfield. We’re looking for volunteers to come along and get involved in the new medicinal garden at Hospitalfield. For full information on how to get involved and accessibility notes please see our website https://hospitalfield.org.uk/support/volunteer/garden-club/ or contact us at volunteer@hospitalfield.org.uk Minimum age: 18

Habitat Restoration Volunteer

Wild Things!
Postcode: IV36 3YR
Wild Things, a local environmental charity based in Moray, has been tackling non-native invasive species on the lower Findhorn River to great effect. Giant Hogweed, Japanese Knotweed and Himalayan Balsam are all plants which out-compete native flora, radically altering the biodiversity of fragile and unique Scottish habitats. We are committed to eradicating the presence of non-native invasive species and working closely with our partners, Findhorn, Nairn and Lossie Fisheries Trust as well as dedicated volunteers from across Moray, we are beating back invasive species. We are looking for adult volunteers for this volunteering role. We provide full PEE and training. The effort can be physically a bit tough and chemicals are used to treat species (glyphosate) and the chemical produced by the plant itself are dangerous (hence the PPE and training). The work can also be quite fun and enjoyable as there is a huge feel-good factor for the positive environmental impacts and a team-spirit working with other volunteers. Individuals can sign up through the website www.wild-things.org.uk What does a day out on our Habitat Restoration Project involve? Conservation volunteering could be: Digging up giant hogweed Pulling up Himalayan balsam Spraying giant hogweed with herbicides Spraying Japanese knotweed with herbicides Clearing paths Surveying for invasive non native plants Fresh air and exercise Good company An opportunity to explore local habitats and the plants and animals that live there These invasive non-native species (INNS) overwhelm the native flora and fauna, limiting biodiversity and threatening the unique but vulnerable habitats around the river which are host to a wide variety of enigmatic species such as Atlantic salmon, otter and osprey. In addition, giant hogweed is a highly toxic plant and is a human health concern, limiting the public’s access to and enjoyment of the river. Your work and energy will help Wild Things! support the return of native species along the banks of the River Findhorn.

Here is some of the work you may find yourself doing Planning - You will be helping us plan gardening sessions and learning about what is planted throughout the seasons. Sharing - It’s not just all about gardening, we will share in lots of other outdoor activities, like the big garden bird watch with the RSPB and the big butterfly count. Tending - This includes, planting, pruning, watering, weeding, mowing, composting, feeding, harvesting. Trying - You will be able to taste and try lots of what we grow and learn lots of new skills. Making - We like to encourage lots of wildlife to the garden so you might find yourself making a bug hotel or birdbox. Mending - There’s a lot more than plants in the garden to look after, we need to maintain, fix and paint fences, planters and raised beds. Learning - Not only will you learn lots of new gardening skills, previous volunteers have found they have increased their confidence, their communication and team working skills, they have also learned how to plan and problem solve. Assistant Beaver Leader/Section Assistant

6th Forfar Scouts Assocation
Postcode: DD8 3JD
Put your skills to use, learn new ones and play an active role in your community. Volunteering is easier than you think. with full support and training, you can volunteer on a flexible basis. Give young people the skills they need to succeed in life and discover how being part of the Scouting family can be as rewarding for you as it is for them. What do volunteers do? Week by week, our volunteers empower thousands of young people to learn new skills, make new friends and stand on their own two feet. They’re our everyday heroes. They shape young people’s lives for the better, and find out a whole lot about themselves in the process, too. That’s where you come in. You don’t need to be Bear Grylls to join us. You don’t need to have been a Beaver or Scout when you were younger. You don’t even need to know how to put up a tent. Our door is open to people of all ages, genders, races and backgrounds, and we’re only able to change lives because people like you lend a hand. We’re talking about tea makers, tidy-uppers and skill sharers. We’re talking about minibus drivers and first aiders. We’re talking about students who want to boost their CV, and parents who volunteer so they can spend more time together as a family. Whatever your skillset, lend a hand for as little or as much time as you can spare, and we promise you’ll get more out than you put in. We provide the training. All of our adult volunteers receive full induction and ongoing training and support. Our training has been recognised with a National Training Award by UK Skills and over 90% of our volunteers believe that the skills and experiences they have gained have been of relevance to their working or personal lives. You show up, get stuck in, and make memories for life. As long as you're over 18, you can help out as a Beaver leader. There is no upper age limit for adult volunteers. Sounds fun? Worthwhile? It is.

Reserve Work Party Volunteer – Culbin Sands

RSPB North Scotland Regional Office
Postcode: IV36 2TG
Are you interested in wildlife and would you like to get involved in practical work on our Culbin Sands reserve? We are looking for new volunteers to get involved and help us manage our remote and fascinating Culbin Sands reserve. We rely on the hard work and dedication of volunteers to keep the habitats on this reserve in fine condition. To do this, we are running work groups, usually once or twice a week between August and April. This role is suitable for under 18’s. We will carry out habitat management tasks during these work groups, which will include the removal of scrub and small trees with hand tools and burning brash on bonfires. We are looking for volunteers to help out with these management tasks by joining our dedicated team of volunteers. Work groups take place between Monday and Saturday. It is not possible to run work groups on regular days of the week as access to Culbin Sands is dependent on the timing of tides, so planned work group dates are released every few weeks. The tasks are running as part of our LIFE 100% for Nature Project, which aims to improve the condition of sand dune and vegetated shingle habitats on the reserve, to benefit a range of rare and threatened species. In this role you'll learn about the management and ecology of this important reserve while developing new skills in habitat management or just enjoying this remote and wild reserve. While in the role, appropriate training and support will be provided for all tasks. Through this role you will be making an important contribution to the management of this reserve. We are looking for volunteers who are enthusiastic, flexible and can get on well with a range of people. If you have an interest in conservation it will be helpful, but not essential. No specialist skills are required however, you will need to be able to use hand tools (bowsaws, loppers) for cutting vegetation and you will need to be able to withstand 4-6 hours of working (at your own pace) on a remote site in sometimes poor weather conditions. You will need to be able to move over steep, boggy and sandy ground and be able to step over or use a narrow plank to cross a tidal creek to access the site. You will need to be comfortable to occasionally work around loud machinery and to follow safety instructions. Due to the remoteness of the reserve, there are no indoor toilet facilities at this reserve. You will need to make sure you have an up-to-date tetanus injection. As the reserve is remote, you will need your own transport to get to the reserve. The reserve is not served by public transport. Volunteers will need to provide their own food, drink and outdoor clothing, including wellies. The RSPB will provide appropriate Personal Protective Equipment relevant to the tasks, such as work gloves and protective glasses. We recommend that new volunteers attend a trial volunteer session, to ensure that the role is suitable for them.

Shorewatch Volunteer

Whale and Dolphin Conservation (Shetland)
Postcode: ZE1 0JP
The Shorewatch citizen science project is a network of volunteers trained and supported by WDC to carry out regular 10-minute surveys from Shorewatch sites across Scotland. We know that Scotland is home to a number of whale and dolphin species, yet there are still so many unanswered questions about where they breed, feed and travel. We believe it is important to keep eyes on the sea so we can better understand these amazing creatures to better protect them. To become a Shorewatch volunteer, you will attend a full day training session where you will learn how to identify different species of cetacean, and how to carry out a 10-minute Shorewatch. You’ll then be fully supported by our Northern Isles Policy Officer in carrying out your first few watches from one of our selected sites – in Shetland these are Mousa Sound, Eshaness Lighthouse, Sumburgh Head Lighthouse, Lerwick (the Knab), Belmont (Unst), South Nesting Bay, Scatness (overlooking Quendale Bay), Burravoe (Yell) and Sandness. All of the equipment you need to carry out the 10-minute survey will be accessible at each site. Understanding the movements of whales, dolphins and porpoises will allow us to comprehend how our behaviours affect them. We can use the data we gather to influence policy makers and advise developers to ensure better protection for whales and dolphins. Shorewatch relies on our amazing community volunteers to collect this vital data.
