Community Council Member

Arbroath Community Council
Postcode: DD11 1HB
Members of local community councils act as representatives for their communities. They find out what issues are affecting the local community as a whole and articulate these concerns to Angus Council and its planning partners – NHS, Police, Fire services etc. They play a vital role in representing the views of the community to local authorities and other public bodies. They usually meet once a month to discuss the issues of current concern in their area, particularly major planning applications and steps to improve our local environment. • They contact and are contacted by relevant agencies to put forward the views of the community which involves collating views from members of the community, including individuals, families and groups. • They discuss and negotiate solutions to local issues and concerns. • They attend meetings with relevant groups, liaise with City Councillors and officials. • When necessary they campaign on big issues of local concern. The Arbroath Community Council is currently looking for people of all ages to take part in the council. We would especially like to hear from younger people who would like to take a more active role within their community. Those interested need to reside in the Arbroath area. Charity Trustees

Aberdeen in Recovery (AiR)
Postcode: AB25 1BT
Aberdeen in Recovery (AiR) was granted Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) charitable status in March this year. We are now looking to find talented, passionate and skilled people to fill some vacant seats on our Board of Trustees to help us grow and develop our innovative and solution focused new charity. This is a unique opportunity to help lay the foundations to ensure AiR has a long-term future as a charity with solid processes in place to ensure it meets its mission of: “To be a bridge from ‘dependence’ to ‘independence’ for the individual seeking to recover from problematic substance use and addictive behaviours”. This is such an exciting and invigorating prospect for individuals to get involved and be participant in the tsunami of change which is now gaining momentum and being driven by “Experts by Experience” and the vibrant Lived Experienced Communities which are blossoming, not only locally but are now established as a national phenomena. Since its conception, AiR and its members have worked tirelessly to establish and build collaborative relationships with professional services and third sector support agencies. We have consistently driven the message that individuals who have personal lived/living experience of active substance use, including Family members who have been affected by the addictive behaviours of a loved one, and the Recovery Communities they represent have something valid, essential and extremely beneficial to bring to described Recovery Orientated Systems of Care (ROSC). We can provide existing services and clinical structural systems with resources, skills and capabilities that they, no matter how much effort, time and money they invest, will never be able to offer or provide. So, it gives the greatest of pleasure to see this is now recognised on the highest levels that “Recoverists” can productively contribute to the design, development and delivery of truly person-centred ROSC. This being evidenced by the vision, philosophy and content of the Scottish Governments “Rights, Respect and Recovery” Drug and Alcohol Strategy. We also believe it is reaffirmed by the recent success in being granted funding from the Government’s National Development Fund, with our principle partner Alcohol and Drugs Action (ADA), for our ‘Recovery Peer Pathway’ joint two-year project. This collaborative venture will build on three years of pilot work to further establish and build proactive and productive Developmental Pathways within ADA and their Volunteer network while in synergy with AiR membership for individuals who desire to initiate change in their behaviours and outlook as they progress on their recovery journeys within, and imperatively out-with, statutory and formal support services. We believe that the blue sky thinking behind this project categorically and emphatically fits with the expectations, outcomes and concepts of the above Government policy. So, if you have lived experience, or a stakeholder interest, and a passion for recovery and are willing to give of yourself that another may learn, you will not find a better opportunity to indulge your appetite than from within Aberdeen in Recovery. For more information please contact Dermot Craig, Recovery Community Development Manager at E Mail: dermot@aberdeeninrecovery.org or tel.: 01224 638342 / Mobile: 07751 213108.

Grandmentor - Volunteer Mentor

Volunteering Matters
Postcode: EH26 8AA
Grandmentors is an award-winning, inter-generational mentoring programme, operating in various locations across the UK. We are currently looking for new Volunteer Mentors to join our programme in Midlothian which launched in 2023. It is widely recognised that care-experienced young people are some of the most disadvantaged in society. Many are in care because they have experienced, or are at risk of, neglect and/or abuse. Security and stability are often missing from their lives. We recruit, train and support volunteer mentors (normally but not exclusively aged 50+) who draw on their wealth of professional and personal life experience and skills to support young people (aged 16-26) through life transitions on their pathway to independence. Grandmentors is all about empowering and positive relationships, aligning to “The Promise” that Scotland made to its care experienced population. Young people are listened to, heard, and responded to. They benefit from safe, consistent loving relationships, and access to meaningful support to boost mental & physical wellbeing, resilience, and confidence. Grandmentors facilitate conversations around keeping well, coping strategies, self-care, and self-management. Each young person alongside their Grandmentor co-produces a bespoke support plan and set goals based on their needs. They explore and review the young person’s challenges, and priorities. These range from enhancing mental & physical health and wellbeing, dealing with stress and conflict, support to access sustainable and appropriate housing, career, and education goals, budget planning and more.

Professional Volunteers

Sported (Aberdeen)
Postcode: AB10 1AB
We know representation matters, which is why we want our volunteers to reflect the diversity of the community groups we work with. We are actively encouraging applicants from ethnically diverse backgrounds and other minoritised groups to apply as we are currently under-represented in this space. -Who is Sported? We are the UK’s largest network of community groups supporting half a million young people to overcome barriers to reach their full potential. Sported members are led by an incredible group of passionate and dedicated people who do amazing work in their communities, transforming the lives of young people in neighbourhoods across the UK. Where they often lack support or the time is around their organisation’s development and it’s here where you can make a difference. -What will I get out of it? You will get to meet the inspirational faces of community groups across the UK and immerse yourself in their work; use your existing skills in a rewarding fashion whilst developing new ones; guide members to become more inclusive; network with other like-minded individuals helping grassroots sports groups survive; and so much more. Our volunteers say that making a positive difference to our members is what they most enjoy about volunteering at Sported. -What will I do as a Sported volunteer? You'll use your professional skills and lived experience to help groups overcome operational challenges, become better equipped for the future, and tackle inequality in sport. Most of our roles are quite flexible and work around your schedule. We do our best to only share opportunities we think are relevant to you. With most of our volunteering support being delivered digitally, it’s even easier to get started supporting members across our network. Travel expenses in line with our policy are covered in the instances in-person meetings occur. -Our roles include: • Short-term placements - Focused on one topic area or specific challenge, placements usually last about 6 sessions. • Long-term placements – Placements span a series of months and encompass multiple topics, or a single complex subject. • One-off support – Kickstarts are semi-structured, informal chats to learn more about a group’s strengths and challenges, and recommend a course of action. • Specific project work, facilitating/delivering webinars and training, or supporting Sported itself plus much more! -Hear more from our volunteers: “I like volunteering because It’s my way of contributing to community development. Sported makes it very easy for me to connect with incredibly interesting and hugely committed individuals who work above and beyond to make a difference in their community – wow!” “If you’re thinking of volunteering for some charity work – whether you’re into sporting activities or not – then I would suggest you contact Sported and you’ll be amazed at what a difference you’ll make.” “The best part is working with organisations that make a difference to people’s lives.” For more information please contact us at: volunteer@sported.org.uk , telephone.: 07557 374886 or visit: https://sported.org.uk/volunteers/

The Aberdeen Branch has organised several different therapy sessions, including physiotherapy; alternative therapies such as reflexology and facial massage; dancing for Parkinson’s; a very popular singing group; a carers’ group; and a Young People’s group. Efforts are also being made to re-institute sessions of hydrotherapy in an alternative location. Finally, there is a monthly social event with talks by invited speakers, and occasional lunch events too. The committee numbers over a dozen, with roles in assisting in the administration and running of these therapy sessions. There is a volunteer secretary and a volunteer treasurer too and they all give the chairperson valuable support. The committee meets on Wednesdays at 12 noon every month with meetings lasting one and a half hours on average, although there are usually no meetings in July due to a summer recess. The meetings deal with issues of finance, feedback from the various therapy groups, and looking at providing further means of support for those with Parkinson’s. All meetings involving the Chairperson take place in the Craigiebuckler Church, recently re-named the Springfield Parish Church, 185 Springfield Road Aberdeen AB15 8AA. If you are interested in volunteering in this important and fantastic role where you can make a real difference, with all help greatly appreciated, please contact Peter Fogiel (current chair) at email peter.fogiel@btinternet.com or telephone 07595362947.

Food Pantry Volunteer

The KLSB Community Group (Keeping Larbert and Stenhousemuir Beautiful)
Postcode: FK5 4HE
We offer a welcoming approach and treat all members with the dignity that they deserve. KLSB have worked alongside community partners including Stenhousemuir FC, local councillors, local small businesses & various homeless charities and supported accommodation. Members pay a small fee whenever they visit the pantry where they can pick up to 10 items of food, household essentials, personal products and / or pet food. Depending on availability we may also be able to offer free items which will be over the members allocation. We do not operate like a food bank where pantry users are only entitled to a small amount of goods for a small period of time. We offer our members a place on the pantry at a cost of only£2.50 per visit. This cost entitles the member to call into the pantry once per week and pick items of shopping. As we are a non-profit group all funds received are reinvested back into the pantry meaning that there is always stock available for all. We offer our members fresh fruit, bread & eggs. We are looking for volunteers to help at our Community Food Pantry in Stenhousemuir. Duties will include:- • Moving and sorting stock which requires a level of physical fitness • Sorting stock into dates and rotating stock within those dates • Restocking shelves with cupboard items • Making up recipe bags with ingredients • Recording fridge and freezer temperatures • Assisting service users visiting the pantry • Cash handling of fees and donations The pantry is open 3 days per week, although volunteers are in the pantry out with these times sorting stock and restocking shelves. Community Gardening Volunteers

Burghead Amenities Association
Postcode: IV30 5UD
Burghead Amenities Association has a wonderful community garden in Burghead which is enjoyed by people of all generations and abilities. They have various flower beds, a sensory garden, play area for toddlers, and hopefully soon they will have an outdoor gym for all ages and abilities. There is ample scope for people to help with all aspects of the garden, from simple weeding, to assisting them on maintenance, designing and caring vegetables. No Skills are required as there will be people around to learn from, to do whatever is needed. The garden is run totally by volunteers, most of whom have no horticultural training, but they all learn from each other and help each other. This is mostly physical work, so people that have difficulty or pain bending and kneeling may want to restrict their time allocation for helping. The local primary children come over with their teachers from the school. All ages are welcome, but children will need to be accompanied by an adult. Volunteers help one hour on a Monday evening and two hours on Saturday mornings. Get in touch if you would like to find out more! https://www.facebook.com/pg/burgheadstationyard/about

Habitat Restoration Volunteer

Wild Things!
Postcode: IV36 3YR
Wild Things, a local environmental charity based in Moray, has been tackling non-native invasive species on the lower Findhorn River to great effect. Giant Hogweed, Japanese Knotweed and Himalayan Balsam are all plants which out-compete native flora, radically altering the biodiversity of fragile and unique Scottish habitats. We are committed to eradicating the presence of non-native invasive species and working closely with our partners, Findhorn, Nairn and Lossie Fisheries Trust as well as dedicated volunteers from across Moray, we are beating back invasive species. We are looking for adult volunteers for this volunteering role. We provide full PEE and training. The effort can be physically a bit tough and chemicals are used to treat species (glyphosate) and the chemical produced by the plant itself are dangerous (hence the PPE and training). The work can also be quite fun and enjoyable as there is a huge feel-good factor for the positive environmental impacts and a team-spirit working with other volunteers. Individuals can sign up through the website www.wild-things.org.uk What does a day out on our Habitat Restoration Project involve? Conservation volunteering could be: Digging up giant hogweed Pulling up Himalayan balsam Spraying giant hogweed with herbicides Spraying Japanese knotweed with herbicides Clearing paths Surveying for invasive non native plants Fresh air and exercise Good company An opportunity to explore local habitats and the plants and animals that live there These invasive non-native species (INNS) overwhelm the native flora and fauna, limiting biodiversity and threatening the unique but vulnerable habitats around the river which are host to a wide variety of enigmatic species such as Atlantic salmon, otter and osprey. In addition, giant hogweed is a highly toxic plant and is a human health concern, limiting the public’s access to and enjoyment of the river. Your work and energy will help Wild Things! support the return of native species along the banks of the River Findhorn.

Grandmentor - Volunteer Mentor in Perth and Kinross

Volunteering Matters
Postcode: PH2 8LU
Grandmentors is an award-winning, inter-generational mentoring programme, operating in various locations across the UK. We are currently looking for new Volunteer Mentors to join our programme in Perth and Kinross which launched in 2023.

Foodbank Volunteers

Mamacita Foundation
Postcode: AB24 4NR
This is an opportunity for us to show the kind of love for humanity that abides in this beautiful city of Aberdeen to the newest members (immigrants) during their integration and inclusion process. Helping in the way of supporting families and individuals in need of these food items due to lack of funding, no job, or even homeless situation (with no recourse to public funding from the government), amidst other integration and inclusion struggles will go a very long way. Most of these beneficiary members include men, women, children, and young ones, who are not necessarily asylum seekers or refugees but immigrants who have come to our beautiful host city and made it home. The cultural, social, and moral differences that exist between their home country and Aberdeen (host community), have made settling (integration and inclusion) more difficult for these members. No job equates to no money, which also equates to no food. Mamacita Foundation, as part of our social responsibility is partnering with other organisations and working endlessly to ensure a swift integration and inclusion process for these members of our community. In our bid to manage food waste reduction as well as get it to persons in need of these food items, we are calling on you, yes you, to join us as we work with @CFINE, @ Fairshare, and @ Coop group in reaching out to persons. Your service to humanity is always appreciated and we look forward to working with you in supporting others in need. Nobody should feel alone. A fantastic opportunity to help and make a real difference. All volunteer support is greatly appreciated. For more details please contact Vivian Draghici at email: info@mamacitafoundationuk.com or telephone: 07449826988. #Neverfeelalone #Aberdeencares #Bringinghopetohumanity

Postcode: DD9 6SY
Come and join our work party which is building the foundation of a Community Supported Agriculture project for Brechin. Help the core farm team grow, harvest and distribute food, facilitate educational projects and host community events. More specifically, the role of the volunteers could be anything from producing social media posts to digging, weeding and planting to building a tool shed or propagation bench to constructing rain water harvesting system. We would aim to hear what you wish to do and accommodate that desire within the work of the team. Together we create delicious, nutritious food, magical hands-on experiences and enrich the local wildlife and soil.

Food & Fun Volunteers

Aberdeen City Council Food & Fun Programme
Postcode: AB10 1AB
Food and Fun was introduced by the Council as a pilot to deliver free meals and activities to children in key areas of Aberdeen during school holiday periods and has been rolled out on a permanent basis. Over Christmas, as an extension of the project, special events were hosted for young people to enjoy the festivities – from ice skating and crafts to a disco and visit to Santa. For everyone involved in Food and Fun there’s a busy period ahead. The main aim is to ensure children continue to be fed, recognising the importance of school meals during term time for a large number of families, and also to provide the opportunity to take part in physical activity in a nurturing environment. The initiative has been recognised with awards – but the reward and motivation for the many people who have put their heart and soul into developing the programme is in the positive impact there is on children, families and communities. When we talk about our purpose – about caring for our city and our people – we think Food and Fun is a shining example that we can all be incredibly proud of. Many participants obtain great life skills which has assisted them in securing other opportunities as well as the personal development and satisfaction that this also brings. All help makes a difference and is greatly appreciated. To volunteer / for more information please contact Martin Smith, Locality Inclusion Manager at E Mail: martinsmith@aberdeencity.gov.uk or Tel.: 01224 788538.
