Family Wellbeing Befriending Volunteer - Edinburgh
Would you like to support children, young people, and their families in Edinburgh?
Children 1st works to keep children where they are safe, well and loved with their families and communities. This volunteering opportunity will be based within the Children 1st Edinburgh Family Wellbeing Service which supports children and young people across the city.
The safety and wellbeing of children and young people is at the heart of what we do. Our work includes support for families who face a number of different barriers and challenges including: ethnically diverse backgrounds; money worries; children with additional support needs; children and parents affected by poor mental health, and families affected by domestic abuse. We take a strength-based approach to improve safety and wellbeing.
Volunteering with the Edinburgh Family Wellbeing Service as a befriending volunteer will complement the support we provide to help reduce isolation and promote a sense of belonging by encouraging children and young people to engage with their wider community.
What will I be doing
We know that safe, supportive and trusting relationships are an essential part of building children’s confidence, resilience and wellbeing.
As a befriending volunteer you will build a positive 1 to 1 relationship with the child or young person you are matched with. You will meet with them regularly and support them to take part in a range of activities within their community and to develop new interests and connections. What you do together will depend on the interests of the child and could include taking them to a local park, taking them to sports clubs, art and craft activities, attending events in the community, and much more.
We aim to match volunteers and children based on shared interests wherever possible and we also take into account volunteers’ transport requirements. We will explore this with you at interview and during training and induction.
Please see role description below for information about the role.

Would you like to help to support children, young people and families in Midlothian?
Are you able to offer a few hours of your time each week?
If so, please get in touch, we’d love to hear from you.
This volunteering opportunity will be based with the Midlothian Family Wellbeing team, in Dalkeith.
Our aim is to help children and families recover and move on from trauma and/or adversity that they have faced. Volunteering with the Midlothian team will complement the support families receive from the wider team to help build confidence and stronger family relationships, reduce isolation, build stability in their recovery and promote a sense of belonging with their wider community.
We are particularly interested in hearing from people with their own lived experience of addiction and recovery orientated supports, whether that is as the person in addiction or experience of a loved one’s addiction. If you now have stability in relation to recovery and mental health and are interested in volunteering in this area, we would like to hear from you. However, we also welcome applications from those applicants who do not have lived experience but have a passion for doing the right thing for children and families.
What will I be doing?
Our volunteers build relationships with families in different ways including:
• Family Wellbeing – this can include activities such as helping to establish and support family play and spending time with the family in the local community accessing activities and resources.
• Befriending – developing a 1 to 1 supportive, reliable, social relationship with a child, young person or adult by arranging weekly opportunities to experience new activities and develop interests.
• Parent Mentoring - helping to increase a parent or carer’s confidence and self-esteem.
• Group Work – supporting the work of Children1st staff within group sessions with parents as well as whole family activities.
During training and induction we will explore further what families need and the skills and qualities you could bring to one of these roles.
