Neil's Hugs Foundation is a well-established charity in West Lothian and are expanding into the Clackmannanshire area. The group are developing a safe, compassionate and confidential space where support groups can meet for:
• Anyone who are experiencing poor mental health
• To support people who have lost loved ones to suicide
• Families who are supporting a loved one who attempted suicide.
The Foundation seeks to provide a safe place to talk and listen and support each other. They aim to reduce loneliness and isolation people with poor mental health experience.
Neil's Hugs are developing a one-to-one, 12 week Befriending Service to aid people who are experiencing anxiety and poor mental health to build confidence and skills. Volunteers can help in offering this one-to-one support by becoming Befriender, which will:
• Aid in achieving people's desired outcomes
• Help people become more active in their local community.
Volunteers can help in facilitating groups. Often people find it difficult to talk to people they know, so Neil's Hugs have also established a number of groups. The Support Groups are designed around providing a safe space for people to talk. The groups allow members the space and time while offering a compassionate, listening ear. The Foundation also utilises activities such as art therapy:
- Listening Ear Service which is a phone or video service (Zoom) where volunteers support individuals who are experiencing poor mental health by giving them space on a weekly basis to talk. The volunteer’s listen and give support to those who just need someone to talk to.
- People who have lost loved ones to suicide can attend a weekly Support Group that provides peer-support for families and friends who have lost a loved one to suicide. This too is a safe place to talk about loved one and to have peers involved in people's grief and loss.
- The Gardening Group is among the newest developments at The Foundation. They have now linked in with the Wimpy Park's Garden who have offered an area for volunteers and those grieving to develop into a reflection garden.
Volunteers can:
If the above roles are not suitable, there are always extra help needed in raising awareness of suicide in communities and raising funds to help keep these vital projects going.
We're looking for friendly people who can spare 2-3 hours a week to help us in our Bo'ness charity shop. If you want to gain new skills, meet new people or be part of a fantastic team who go the extra mile to help us make a difference then we would love to hear from you!
Our shops are an important part of how we raise the funds we need to support our patients and their loved ones, and we need volunteers to help us continue to run our shops successfully. You will be helping us with all aspects of running the shop; sorting through bags of donations, processing items for sale and serving our customers on the till.
If you have an eye for fashion and design then we would love you to help us create attractive window displays with seasonal and other items, so that our customers want to come in and browse. You will receive full training when you join us, so no previous retail experience is necessary. If you love working with others and would enjoy volunteering in a place where no two days are the same then this could be the opportunity for you.
Do you have an interest in pastoral care, some free time and a lovely, gentle dog? Then volunteering for Pet and Companion (PEACE for short) could be for you and your furry friend!
PEACE is a charity providing Canine Therapy along with Pastoral Care for people in need of support and companionship, particularly: the elderly; patients receiving end of life care; students during stressful periods; and vulnerable women.
Pastoral Carers and their therapy dogs (PEACE Teams) visit people in need of support and companionship in various locations, including: Care Homes; University and College campuses; and community hubs. Ideally, PEACE Teams will volunteer for a couple of hours a week/fortnight in order to build relationships with the people they visit.
The PEACE dog helps to provide a relaxing environment (the basis of canine therapy), while the Pastoral Carer offers both a listening ear and a means of support, happy to talk through any concerns or fears a person may have (pastoral care).
The role of a PEACE Pastoral Carer is similar to that of a befriender. All Pastoral Carers are therefore Christians, and are comfortable praying and/or discussing their faith with the people they visit, if requested.
All PEACE Pastoral Carers receive training in Mental Health First Aid, attentive listening and dementia awareness. Volunteers will also become members of the PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) scheme.
For information about volunteering or any other enquiries about PEACE, please contact Georgie Treharne-Hulks, Volunteer Manager at email: georgie@petandcompanion.com Further information is also available at www.petandcompanion.com
Being a Community Facilitator is all about delivering a variety of lifesaving first aid skills in community engagement workshops and projects, within local communities, and primary and secondary schools. A lot of these projects involve talking about and demonstrating the basics of first aid to community groups that can include children, young people, and vulnerable adults.
An example of events you could be delivering a first aid talk and demo to, are primary and secondary schools, small university groups, local community groups, charities, summer fairs, shopping centres. Some of the skills you could be teaching include how to provide CPR and apply a defib, different bandages and how to use them, and basic information on various health conditions. Not only that but all the training needed, is provided by us at no cost to you!
A fantastic opportunity to help. All volunteers make a real difference and are greatly appreciated.
For more information please contact Daniel Handy, Community Engagement Admin at email community@firstaid.org.uk or telephone 0141 332 4031.
Fancy volunteering in a nutrition study and being part of world-leading research? This is an opportunity to help develop future clinical research into pelvic cancers!
We are looking for men and women over 60 years old, and the overall goal of our study is to explore the mechanism of action of dietary fibre on the gut microbiota. The gut microbiota includes all the small organisms that live in a healthy gut, for example bacteria. And we think that these bacteria enhance the way our body fights cancer cells. As these bacteria are influenced by what we eat, we think that adding specific dietary fibres to a cancer patients diet might help tolerate the cancer therapy better.
However, there is a long way to go before we can prove this in clinical trials and implement this in routine clinical care. The current study is the first step in our journey.
If you decide to be part of our study, we will ask you to take 3 different dietary fibre supplements for 14 days at a time. We will ask you to add these to water or orange juice and consume them twice a day. At the first and last day in which you will take the different supplements, you be invited to the Human Nutrition Unit, our study facility, for a test day.
On these test days, once you arrive in the morning, we will receive your stool sample and provide you with breakfast. After breakfast, you will be asked to fill in a questionnaire about your quality of life in the last 2 weeks, to assess the effect of the supplement on your health and wellbeing. Lastly, we will take a blood sample 5 hours after breakfast, after which the test day ends.
We will also inform about your diet with questionnaires, as your diet influences your gut microbiome. We do this using 2 different questionnaires; one enquires about your food intake in the last 3 months, the other asks you to keep a food diary to note down all the food and drinks you have consumed in the 3 days before the 6 test days. Your answers to questionnaires, and your stool and blood samples will help us better understand the role of dietary fibre in our gut.
