Food and Fun was introduced by the Council as a pilot to deliver free meals and activities to children in key areas of Aberdeen during school holiday periods and has been rolled out on a permanent basis. Over Christmas, as an extension of the project, special events were hosted for young people to enjoy the festivities – from ice skating and crafts to a disco and visit to Santa.
For everyone involved in Food and Fun there’s a busy period ahead. The main aim is to ensure children continue to be fed, recognising the importance of school meals during term time for a large number of families, and also to provide the opportunity to take part in physical activity in a nurturing environment.
The initiative has been recognised with awards – but the reward and motivation for the many people who have put their heart and soul into developing the programme is in the positive impact there is on children, families and communities.
When we talk about our purpose – about caring for our city and our people – we think Food and Fun is a shining example that we can all be incredibly proud of.
Many participants obtain great life skills which has assisted them in securing other opportunities as well as the personal development and satisfaction that this also brings.
All help makes a difference and is greatly appreciated. To volunteer / for more information please contact Martin Smith, Locality Inclusion Manager at E Mail: martinsmith@aberdeencity.gov.uk or Tel.: 01224 788538.
Our vision for Social Suppers is simple, we want to be able to provide delicious and nutritious food to people who are currently homeless or experiencing food poverty. *What will I be doing?
• Volunteering with Social Bite shop staff to prepare the shop and get food and drink set up for each evening session.
• Welcoming people to the shop. Being a friendly face and talking to them about how they are doing.
• Passing on information to people about how they can access services provided by our partner charities e.g. housing/benefits advice, courses, drug/alcohol support.
• Cleaning and tidying up at the end of the service.
*Relevant training and excellent support is provided to all volunteers. Including:
• Food Hygiene training (can be done remotely through our online training portal)

The volunteer cook will be matched with an older person living in their area. They will provide a portion of a home cooked meal once a week, deliver it to the older person and stay for a chat if required. This meal share activity has a very important befriending element to it as many if our members may be socially isolated and will value having a local connection within their community.

The Cosy Café runs 10-1130 so we would be looking for volunteers to help the Cosy Café Support Worker from 930am-12pm.
The Manna Project is based in Carnoustie Baptist Church. It’s a two-part operation, working to tackle food poverty and providing free light lunches once a week through the Manna café. We aim to provide a warm, accessible, space where people can gather, and enjoy the company and a light lunch.
The Manna community cafe is looking for someone with a community-focused mindset, good communication, and interpersonal skills, with crucially, the necessary cooking skills and preferably some knowledge of how a small commercial-type kitchen works, to join the Team as a volunteer.
This initially would be to help with the preparation and cooking of the soup, able to operate independently when necessary, but may develop over time.
This would be a good opportunity for a retired cook seeking to do some worthwhile voluntary work.
Searchlight Scotland organises a Coffee Morning every Friday from 10am-12pm at the Junction Café (5 Bon-Accord Terrace, Aberdeen AB11 6DP), in collaboration with The Junction Church.
Our community café is open to everyone, especially vulnerable people and parents with children. People can relax, have a coffee and a chat with our case workers.
Our main aim is to provide to the community a free space where everyone can feel comfortable and have a first contact with us if they need our support.
We have great opportunities for people to help volunteering at the Coffee Mornings and provide a smile to our customers. Main duties are:
• Welcome and chat with customers.
• Help serve drinks and cakes.
• Create a relaxing environment.
• Assist with activities.
• Help tidy up the Cafe' after closing.
A fantastic opportunity to assist in a Community Café that provides an important and welcoming place where people can come together. All help makes a real difference and is greatly appreciated.
