The Partnership works to raise awareness of the challenges faced by people with disabilities and to break down barriers, overcome challenges and improve quality of life. The group comprises approximately 15 members of the public, working with five local councillors, and its vision is to: a) To bring about improvements to the lives of people in Aberdeen City who experience exclusion because of disability by promoting a rights-based approach to disability equality. b) To create a society where disabled people are valued, respected and included in the life of the City. c) To encourage and promote inclusion and equality. d) To create fair opportunity by identifying and removing the disabling barriers which disabled people face daily including prejudice, discrimination and negative attitudes. e) To provide a means of partnership, consultation and joint action with Aberdeen City Council Meetings are held at Aberdeen Town House (entrance from Queen Street, Aberdeen). There is also the option to join the meeting remotely if you choose to do so. The Disability Equity Partnership (DEP) has 6 meetings over the year. Examples of projects we have been working on include the City Centre Masterplan, Union Terrace Gardens, webpage and information accessibility to reduce barriers and improve access to information, goods and services. Scottish Communities Climate Action Network (SCCAN)’s purpose is to inspire and promote, connect and support community-led action in Scotland to address the Climate Emergency. PSPA is a national charity providing support and information to people living with PSP and CBD, while funding research into treatments and ultimately a cure. We rely entirely on voluntary donations. You can see more about this here at https://pspassociation.org.uk/ *Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) is a neurological condition caused by the premature loss of nerve cells in certain parts of the brain. *Corticobasal Degeneration (CBD) is a degenerative brain disease that affects people from the age of 40 onwards. PSPA covers the United Kingdom and works very closely with other PSP organisations across the world working together supporting research and the provision of information and support into PSP and CBD. Following funding from the Scottish Government, we can now increase our work in Scotland including increasing the volunteering opportunities here. Volunteers are the lifeblood of PSPA - We value the skills, experience, commitment and enthusiasm that our volunteers bring – so we are recruiting in Scotland to enable us to reach out to more people affected by PSP and CBD. We also aim to have our volunteers raise awareness in local communities by them offering informative talks to interested groups. Volunteers will need to be enthusiastic, enjoy speaking to groups and able to manage a group effectively. This role involves visiting blind and partially sighted people in their homes, installing their new radio and teaching them how to use it as well as proving ongoing support, where needed. This role also involves a small amount of admin. >Where is it based? The role is based within your local area. You will be asked to travel around a reasonable distance within your local area. (To be mutually agreed.) >How much time will I need to commit? Each visit will take around 2 hours to complete. *Help with soup making and/or serving, supporting and socializing at our fantastic Y Knot Drop- in Lunch Club* You would be joining a team of volunteers, helping to provide a safe, welcoming space where visitors can relax and enjoy a friendly chat and a variety of activities, such as cards, dominoes and occasionaly crafts. Our visitors are people from all walks of life who need support to deal with challenges to their mental health. Volunteers can choose from a variety of options: >9.30am to 2.30pm Making soup, serving, joining in activities or >12noon to 2.30pm Serving, helping to clear up, joining in activities. (Everyone has lunch together) A monthly rota ensures that volunteers can tailor their volunteering times to fit in with other commitments. Some work once a month, others every week or once a fortnight. We would be happy to discuss details with you should you decide to apply-and we're hoping that you will.
