The role is to take part in our food service aiming to help homeless and hungry people in Edinburgh. The tasks include setting up the food distribution, welcoming the beneficiaries, distributing the food available, sharing time and giving compassion to the beneficiaries or anyone who needs it. Other tasks could include collecting surplus food from supermarkets or supporting broader operations in Edinburgh in cooperation with the local team. You will carry out meaningful activities one-to-one with patients such as painting, playing board games, listening to music, looking through old photographs to reminisce, doing quizzes and crossword puzzles or completing a storybook of the patient’s life. You will also help facilitate group activities with patients during special events like afternoon teas or parties. Where trained, you may also have opportunities to take patients outside for walks and assist with feeding at mealtimes.

If after successful selection, you decide to become a volunteer you will join a small team of Samaritans here in Stornoway. You will be given extensive specialist training and have the opportunity to expand and extend your skills and talents.
You will be expected to man the telephones during a shift, respond to e mails and texts, and give around 12 hours per month to meet the rota.
