We are a registered group of the Riding for the Disabled Association, and for over 30 years have provided Therapy Riding and Hippotherapy for children, youths and adults with learning difficulties and physical disabilities. Most of our riders come from West Fife and Clackmannanshire. Through providing therapy riding we hope to help our riders develop their self-esteem, confidence and life skills whilst improving movement and motor skills.
Shiresmill Therapy Riding Centre is run solely by volunteers who give up as much of their time as possible to help provide sessions for our riders.
There are various roles in which a volunteer may undertake at Shiresmill from helping to prepare the horses for lessons (including grooming and tacking up), to helping prepare riders for lessons, and being involved in lessons from either leading the horse to side walking with a rider (which helps ensure their safety, and to assist them in their communication).
Each session is run by one of our Group coaches who will supervise and support each of the volunteers.
We have a training programme that volunteers work through and are signed off for different tasks once they feel comfortable in carrying out that task. We also provide additional training opportunities such as First Aid, Safeguarding, as well as more specific equine related training sessions.
We are flexible as to what days’ people attend, we only ask that people give a few hours each time they come.
No previous experience is necessary as full training will be provided. It is beneficial to have experience with horses, or working with people.
