Butterfly Trust

Charity registered in Scotland SC033174

The Butterfly Trust is the leading provider of social support to the Cystic Fibrosis community of Scotland. We were founded in 2002 to provide face to face services for people with Cystic Fibrosis and their families. Our aim is that people living with Cystic Fibrosis will have access to the support they need to ensure they can benefit from optimum homecare and enjoy the best quality of life in the community.

Current opportunities

Children and adults with Cystic Fibrosis have to attend clinic appointments at hospital, to have their health monitored, usually every three months. Travelling on public transport poses risks of infection and waiting for transport in our typical inclement weather is undesirable because of their chronic lung condition. Our Volunteer Drivers ensure a safe and comfortable journey, to and from hospital appointments. Our clients do not need any physical help getting in and out of the vehicle and our drivers use their own car. This service makes a real difference by reducing some of the pressure on families at this time.

The Butterfly Trust is looking for mentors for young people with cystic fibrosis. Mentoring is a fantastic and rewarding way to make a difference to the life of someone else, giving personal satisfaction and enhancing your own life. Young people living with this condition have a demanding daily treatment regime at home and sometimes experience limitations that can affect their confidence and ability to cope with the challenges of everyday living. They may also be socially isolated because of their condition. Mentors offer support to young adults with Cystic Fibrosis in improving socialisation, broadening horizons and exploring concerns to improve self-esteem, enhance coping skills and the person's quality of life. A mentor will meet with a young adult regularly to build a trusting one-to-one relationship for at least a year.

Befriending is a fantastic and rewarding way to make a real difference to the life of someone else, giving personal satisfaction and enhancing your own life experience. This role is supported by Children in Need. Their befrienders offer one to one support to a young person aged 8-18, affected by Cystic Fibrosis. Young people living with this condition have a demanding daily treatment regime at home and sometimes experience limitations that can affect their confidence and ability to cope with the challenges of everyday living. They may also be socially isolated because of their condition. A befriender will meet with the young person every 1 to 2 weeks, to build a trusting one to one relationship, for a year. This allows the young person time, space and a suitable environment to explore their feelings, discuss their fears, develop life skills and grow in the areas where they may be struggling.

The Butterfly Trust is looking for Support Volunteers for families and individuals affected by Cystic Fibrosis. This is a fantastic and fulfilling way to make a difference to the life of other people, giving the personal satisfaction of helping someone, and an opportunity to enhance your own life experience. Their volunteers are their local representatives who provide social support in their local community for people affected by Cystic Fibrosis. A Support Volunteer is their first point of contact with clients in their area, responding to requests for help to acquire home improvements, disability related benefits or just someone to talk to. They offer a listening ear and help to negotiate systems that include housing, benefits, education, employment and independent living. Support Volunteers can also be trained to provide advocacy if they wish to be more challenged, learn new skills or perhaps make good use of those they already have.
