Rock Trust

Charity registered in Scotland SC018708

The Rock Trust is a charity that works in Edinburgh and West Lothian with homeless and socially excluded young people between the ages of 16 and 25 years. The Trust’s aim is to provide opportunities for young people to develop the personal, social and practical skills, as well as the sense of self worth necessary for independent adult life.

We do this by providing supported accommodation in a mixture of shared and single flats, including specific provision for young mothers and babies, move on support to those moving to their own home. Our Compass Project also offer supports to young people to develop the social coping skills to avoid isolation, along with opportunities for befriending and mentoring support and supported volunteering opportunities across the Lothians.

Current opportunities

This is a live-in volunteering role. Volunteers will live with and support 3 young people who have/are experiencing homelessness. The aim is to provide safe, well-managed supported accommodation. Supportive Flatmates help to create this environment by being a responsible presence, providing practical support around the flat. A budget of £200 per month is available to plan activities with young people. Free rent, bills and internet are included.

To provide safe overnight accommodation and support for a young person using the scheme including a meal and washing facilities. To support young people to feel relaxed and comfortable in the accommodation. To introduce a young person to the household and make them aware of essential routines and act upon any relevant information. To operate creative methods of assisting young people to articulate their needs. To ensure a safe, secure and respectful environment within the scheme.

Rock Trust Community Ambassadors form an exciting team of supporters who work to raise awareness of youth homelessness in Edinburgh and further afield. Community Ambassadors can get stuck in with their local community to help identify opportunities for the charity and the young people the Rock Trust support. Activities include assisting with outreach stalls, promoting events, and securing food, toiletries, clothes and monetary donations from local businesses and community groups.

As we develop our online presence, we need to continue to amplify our messages and ensure adequate space is made for the people we support to highlight their story. This can prove challenging when our primary objective must always be to protect those we support, and ensure that they can live a life without any disadvantage caused by our communications activities in the years that follow their homelessness experience.
