Quarriers is a Scottish charity providing practical support and care for children, adults and families. We challenge poverty and inequality of opportunity and choice, to bring about positive change in people's lives. Quarriers operates 127 Projects throughout Scotland and South-West England. They vary greatly, due to the wide variety of needs that we address but include group homes and supported living services for people with physical and learning disabilities, support services and Scotland's only residential assessment service for people with complex forms of epilepsy; a residential and day school and community based projects for children with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties; hostels and support services for young homeless people; family centres; respite and long term care for children with a range of disabilities and other difficulties and support services for carers.
Current opportunities
Quarriers Shared Lives and Family Placement Team provides people with a disability the opportunity to stay in the homes of approved carers and their families. Each placement provides accommodation, care, and support, enabling the person we support to be part of the life and activities of the carer and their family.
Where & When
Within West Lothian area near Broxburn. Once a week depending on the volunteer’s availability.
Purpose Of The Role
This is a fantastic opportunity to spend some time each week supporting a young person in the community to engage with different activities. You will be helping him to achieve a better quality of life by learning and development of new skills. This could involve helping to choose clubs to attend, going to the gym, or taking part in other activities the young person may wish to do. Your support will provide the young person with the the opportunity to develop his own skills and give something back to the community. For example, the young person enjoyed learning painting and decorating at Bloom House and has expressed an interest in learning joinery work or landscape gardening, if the opportunities arose.
Main Tasks Include
The young person enjoys a range of activities and having a volunteer befriender will encourage him to try new things.
Going with the young person to community events, sports activities including football, swimming, and playing pool. He is keen to try new sports activities such as badminton, volleyball etc. There is scope to explore the young person helping out in his local community and learning new skills. The young person requires support while out in the community. For example, he will need support to keep him safe and ensure his emotional needs are met. The volunteer will also need to get to know the young person well and become attuned to his own personal needs.
Required Skills, Qualities & Experience
• It is important that the volunteer builds a positive relationship with the young person.
• The young person is a good natured and easy going individual who enjoys having a joke with others as he has a great sense of humour.
• The volunteer should be able to put the young person at the centre of any activity while they are together. Supporting his independence as much as possible. For example, listening to the young person’s views and allowing him choice while out in the community.
• You must be a patient and kind individual who is able to problem solve and manage any challenges if they arise.
• Good communication skills and open and honest is essential and have a basic understanding of IT skills and carry a mobile phone in case of emergency.

Quarriers Finnart Street based in Greenock is a residential service for people with disabilities.
Purpose Of The Role
Do you have a few hours to spare each week or fortnight? If you enjoy walking, playing PS games, football and socializing this is the role for you! We are looking for a volunteer to befriend a young man and as the relationship develops support him to be more active in the community. This will allow him to enjoy favourite activities with someone who shares the same interests as himself.
Main Tasks
The main tasks will include visiting the young man in his home to get to know him, playing PS games, watching football, going out for a walk and socializing.

Main Tasks Include
* The young person enjoys a range of activities and having a volunteer befriender will encourage him to try new things.
* Going with the young person to community events, cinema, sports activities including football, swimming, and ten pin bowling. There is scope to assist him with finding and sourcing activities that are stimulating and assist with hir learning and development such as employment, volunteering and learning opportunities.
* The young person requires support while out in the community. For example, he will need support to keep him safe and ensure his emotional needs are met. The volunteer will also need to get to know the young person well and become attuned to his own personal needs.
Quarriers’ Aberdeenshire Carer Support Service provides advice and support to adults and young people in Aberdeenshire who provide unpaid care to a family member, friend or neighbour who depends upon them because of physical or mental illness, disability, frailty or substance use.
Purpose of the Role
We are looking for volunteers to help ensure that carer events are engaging, enjoyable and run safely and smoothly.
Main Tasks
The main tasks could include
• Meeting and greeting carers at events
• Ensuring supplies of refreshments are available
• Facilitating social exchanges between carers
• Assisting with setting up and/or clearing up event venues
• Helping carers and their families engage with activities
• Helping maintain safety at events
• Helping carers who attend events to feel included and involved
Volunteers may be asked to undertake additional tasks not detailed above but which are related to making events a success.
