Quarriers is a Scottish charity providing practical support and care for children, adults and families. We challenge poverty and inequality of opportunity and choice, to bring about positive change in people's lives. Quarriers operates 127 Projects throughout Scotland and South-West England. They vary greatly, due to the wide variety of needs that we address but include group homes and supported living services for people with physical and learning disabilities, support services and Scotland's only residential assessment service for people with complex forms of epilepsy; a residential and day school and community based projects for children with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties; hostels and support services for young homeless people; family centres; respite and long term care for children with a range of disabilities and other difficulties and support services for carers.
Current opportunities
Quarriers Shared Lives and Family Placement Team are looking for a befriender to spend some time each week supporting a young person in the community to engage with different activities. You will be helping him to achieve a better quality of life by learning and development of new skills. This could involve helping to choose clubs to attend, going to the gym, or taking part in other activities the young person may wish to do. Your support will provide the young person with the the opportunity to develop his own skills and give something back to the community.
Main Tasks Include
The young person enjoys a range of activities and having a volunteer befriender will encourage him to try new things.
Going with the young person to community events, sports activities including football, swimming, and playing pool. He is keen to try new sports activities such as badminton, volleyball etc. There is scope to explore the young person helping out in his local community and learning new skills. The young person requires support while out in the community. For example, he will need support to keep him safe and ensure his emotional needs are met. The volunteer will also need to get to know the young person well and become attuned to his own personal needs.
William Quarrier Scottish Epilepsy Centre is an independent hospital specialising in clinical assessment and treatment services for patients with epilepsy, epilepsy associated conditions and sleep disorders.
Patients are usually held for 2-4 weeks in the centre without being able to leave the building, so any meaningful engagement is of great benefit.
Do you have a few hours each month to share your passion or skill with our patients. For example could you teach them crafting, yoga, music, photography etc. Could you give them a talk about your life experiences. Do you enjoy holding quizzes or bingo.
By bringing your skills and experiences to our patients, you will be bringing some variety into their day.
To get the most out of the role we hope you can commit at least half a day each month for at least 6 months.
Selection Procedure will include - Application form, chat, references and PVG disclosure.
