Current opportunities

We are looking for welcoming and enthusiastic volunteers to lead and support short health and social walks in West Dunbartonshire - these walks are based in Alexandria, Dumbarton, Old Kilpatrick and in Clydebank. Becoming a volunteer walk leader requires you to commit around an hour or two of your time weekly and to sometimes complete a small amount of preparation & paperwork for the walk. Health walks encourage people who have not exercised for a while, find walking boring, or lack confidence to join a walking group because they think they will not be able to keep up. The walks are free, short, low intensity, safe and social around the local environment. Over the next year we plan to build upon our network of gentle exercise activities across West Dunbartonshire as part of the Walking Friendly West Dunbartonshire partnership. To help us achieve this we are looking for friendly and supportive volunteers who enjoy walking, meeting new folk while sharing the wide-range health and well-being benefits of gentle physical activity. Volunteers all receive Paths for All Walk Leader training to give them the skills and confidence to lead walks in your community. Further training can lead to you to becoming a Dementia Friendly Walk Leader. You will be encouraged to join a Health Walk and chat to a Health Walk leader before your training so that you have an idea of how it works on the ground. Volunteer walk leaders receive on-going support from the Health Walk coordinator.

We all need to go for a walk once in a while for different reasons; to go shopping, visiting the GP, for our physical or mental health and sometimes just to socialise with others. Walking can help people become more active, lose weight and become healthier but some people may need a little more support at the beginning and we want to be there for them. The aim of the APEL initiative is to support people to feel they are involved in their communities and build their confidence to be as active as they can - we need your help to make it happen. The walk leader will work as part of a team to encourage and support members of the public to become more active. Walk leaders will support walkers at a pace that suits the walker, ensuring that everyone enjoys the walks. WDCVS are looking for enthusiastic, reliable people to take on the role of the walk leader to lead group walks using local walking routes in a safe, responsible and enjoyable way. You will have the satisfaction of knowing you are making a practical difference to some - helping them stay safe when walking around, help them get out and about and staying active. If you are looking for experience in leading groups, learning about risk assessing routes, this could be for you. You will understand that for everyone’s safety you will be asked to go through a PVG (police) check, too.
