Strathspey Steam Railway

Charity registered in Scotland SC040498

To restore and maintain the railway from Aviemore to Broomhill.

Current opportunities

Work can be strenuous, maintaining tracks, bridges and fences along the railway line. Less strenuous work is also available in the form of painting station buildings or maintaining gardens which are an important part of the railway's historic character.

You will work under the supervision of professional Signal & Telegraph Engineers helping maintaining the signals, signalling equipment and points on the Railway.

You will be part of a team based at Aviemore maintaining the engines and undertaking a large variety of engineering tasks. Jobs are available for those with engineering skills. However, previous knowledge is not essential as work will be found to suit each volunteer.

Initially volunteering as a trainee fireman/woman assisting around the engine shed you will eventually learn the art of driving a locomotive under careful supervision.
