We all need to stay at home to protect ourselves and others. However, those who are well and not at risk can provide essential support for their family, friends and neighbours who cannot leave the house.

Meal Makers

Charity registered in Scotland SC024843

Meal Makers has been brought to Scotland by the award winning charity Food Train and is proudly sponsored by the Scottish Government and the Tank Foundation. It is a free, local neighbourhood food-sharing project that connects volunteers who have a passion for cooking and want to be active in their communities (Cooks), with older neighbours (Diners) who would appreciate a home cooked meal.

Current opportunities

Do you love cooking and meeting new people? We’re recruiting volunteer Cooks to do a weekly meal share with an elderly Diner in their community. This simple and effective service looks to tackle malnutrition, loneliness and isolation amongst elderly people (55+). If you want to be involved in a ‘feel good’ service that delivers real benefit to elderly people in Dundee then please do get in touch. You don’t have to be Gordon Ramsay in order to be able to deliver this service but you are required to have good cooking skills and a good grasp of food hygiene and the desire to support someone in your community. If you want to signup it couldn’t be easier jut create a profile at www.mealmakers.org.uk or contact us on 0800 783 7770.

Our aim is to support older people to live independently at home by helping to reduce food poverty and malnutrition, improve diets and combat social isolation by breaking down the barriers that lead to loneliness. We are also hoping that the project will help to strengthen connections within communities and provide a flexible way for people to volunteer their time and skills locally in a way which suits them. Meal Makers is a local neighbourhood food-sharing project that connects people with a love for cooking who are happy to share an extra portion of home cooked food with an older neighbour (or “diner”) who might be unable or lack the motivation to prepare a meal for themselves. Meals can be shared once a week, once a fortnight or every now and then, at times to suit. It is designed to be a flexible volunteering opportunity based on an everyday activity. We do our best to match our volunteers with a like-minded neighbour (similar hobbies, interests and dietary requirements) so that both the cook and diner get the most from their Meal Makers experience; we do find that the volunteers benefit from participating just as much as the older person who receives the meal.
