Shetland Arts Development Agency - Mareel

Charity registered in Scotland SC037082

We have a volunteer Trustee Board which provides a strategic overview and governance. We are now on a journey to enable volunteers young and old to take an active part in shaping Shetland Arts at all levels of our work and organisation.

Mareel offers top quality facilities with a live performance auditorium which can be arranged for standing room, theatre seating, cabaret seating, or bespoke options. The two cinema screens show a varied programme of film, including event and arthouse cinema and Screen 2 is available for private hire. The venue also provides rehearsal rooms, a recording studio, education and training spaces, a state of the art digital media production suite, broadcast facilities, exhibition spaces and a cafe bar with a great menu and free high speed wi-fi internet access. BonhogaShop@Mareel offers a small but regularly changing collection of design-led goods, crafts, cards and books, an extension of the popular shop at Bonhoga Gallery in Weisdale. Gift vouchers are available, which can be used at any Shetland Arts venue (including for cinema).

The venue provides an exciting year round programme of film, live music, education and other performance events. It is a hub and a focus for the creative communities not just in Shetland but beyond, and a catalyst for the creative industry sector in Shetland.

Current opportunities

Shetland Arts has a tradition of volunteering: many of our staff came to be working in the arts as volunteers in some way or another, and our board of trustees, which provides strategic overview and governance of the work we do, is made up of volunteers. Along with being part of exciting cultural events across Shetland, our volunteers can use the experience to develop their professional and interpersonal skills while meeting lots of new people. If you're aged between 16-25 you can also log your volunteering hours as part of the Saltire Award scheme. We're really excited to be offering three new volunteering roles across our organisation to enhance and support the delivery of our creative output across Shetland. An Arts Liaison Volunteer provides the first point of contact for visiting artists to Shetland, greeting them at transport terminals and transporting them to their destination and helping out when required backstage. Access to a vehicle and a valid UK driver's licence is necessary for this role.
