WE ARE RECRUITING AGAIN: We are looking for keen gardeners who would be willing to come in for a few hours each week to help maintain our community garden, making it possible for us to keep the garden open to the public 7 days a week. The aim is for people to learn how to plant and grow their own vegetables and flowers and have the use of a plot in our community garden to do that if they live in a flat without any garden. People are key to the success of the garden. We want local people to come in and utilise the space, work in it and use it. We have gardening equipment here for people to use, too.
Tasks would include:
• Pruning and weeding
• Grass cutting
• Planting hanging baskets
• Watering plants
• Cutting grass
• Sweeping up and general tidying
• Building allotment beds
• People applying their own ideas
• Coaching and supporting others
Within the workshop, there are lockers to keep personal belongings safe whilst working in the garden. There is tea and coffee making facilities and toilet facilities for both abled and disabled users.
Plenty of gloves and tools for people of all ages.
RECRUITING NOW! The YMCA building is still closed to indoors youth work until further notice as a result of on-going Covid-19 protocols. However, our volunteers have been doing some outdoor training and have teamed up with an organisation called GolPhin. The purpose of GolPhin is to try and encourage children from a young age to take an interest in golf and outdoor activities; to get fit and get healthy. To do this, they created equipment that fits the child, firstly, by using large club heads and balls and, secondly, they have made it creative, educational and fun.
We feel that this project has come around at just the right time. It uses golf as a medium for literacy & numeracy, whilst also encouraging team-building and teamwork.
Participants will receive a workbook each with QR codes to improve their golf and a GolPhin App for their mobile phones that they and their parents can access. The App has a series of videos & tips to help the child progress.
The GolPhin course is exclusively for YMCA members first and then we hope to progress it into the community.
If you think you can help and would like to find out more about volunteering with this project, please be in touch.
The first course will take place at Dean Castle Country Park, Kilmarnock, (by arrangement with Joe Ferguson at YMCA Kilmarnock) over the next four Fridays, weather permitting, between 4pm & 5:30pm as follows:
• Friday, 28 August 2020
• Friday, 04 September 2020
• Friday, 11 September 2020
