Sporting Memories Foundation Scotland

Charity registered in Scotland SC047268

We are a charity and social enterprise that helps older people to reminiscence, replay and reconnect through the power of sport and physical activity.

Launched in 2011, Sporting Memories supports a wide range of people aged 50-plus, including those living with dementia, living with depression or facing isolation and loneliness to improve their mental and physical wellbeing through our regular club sessions, situated within local communities across England, Scotland and Wales.

We are dedicated to bringing older people together with the aim of making a positive difference in their lives by providing them with a welcoming, supportive and structured environment where they can develop confidence to improve their lives for the better.

Sporting Memories achieves this by offering a range of support mechanisms and unique products which are designed to aid the development and running of sessions in a range of locations including community and leisure centres, care homes, hospitals and a range of settings.

Current opportunities

The Movement Motivator Volunteer will help our club members to get involved in some kind of activity during the club session. This will be some very gentle exercises during the club session to get everyone moving and there will be training provided about some of the activities that we are already using in other clubs eg, Body Boosting Bingo. Some of our club members have mobility problems and will need to exercise while seated and some will need to be persuaded to get moving. Club sessions are great fun and there's lots of banter! You will be part of a team of volunteers who support each other. The club session is 1½ hours every week and on-going support will be provided by the Volunteer & Area Coordinators. We need volunteers who can communicate well with others and can support club members who have memory or physical health problems. The most important skill is to be able to listen to club members and to encourage them to take part in the activities that are offered. Come and join us to make a difference in the lives of older people!

We are looking for someone passionate about sport who enjoys talking with older adults and bringing their enthusiasm to our club members. The Session Supporter works alongside the Session Facilitator to enable the smooth running of the club session and will help to set up the venue for the club as well as welcoming members as they arrive. Our clubs support older people who may have a physical disability and/or memory problems. Some of our members are isolated; they just enjoy popping in for a chat and being able to reminisce about their favourite sports. You will be part of a team of volunteers providing this service for a couple of hours on a weekly basis.
