We are looking for someone passionate about sport who enjoys talking with older adults and can communicate their enthusiasm to our club members.
The Session Supporter works alongside the Session Facilitator to enable the smooth running of the club session and will help to set up the venue for the club as well as welcoming members as they arrive. Our clubs support older people who may have a physical disability and/or memory problems. Some of our members are isolated; they just enjoy popping in for a chat and being able to reminisce about their favourite sports. You will be part of a team of volunteers providing this service for a couple of hours on a weekly basis. We provide training and our staff will meet with you on a regular basis to support you.
The Sporting Memories Foundation Scotland’s aim is to engage with isolated older people living with long-term conditions like dementia, Parkinson’s disease, depression or loneliness. During the club session, we help participants to reminisce about sport and to do some gentle physical activity. We cannot do this without the support of our dedicated volunteers who are always willing to go the extra mile to meet the needs of our club members.
One of our volunteers has commented: "I feel appreciated and see my work making a difference". Most importantly, our volunteers and members love a bit of banter and club sessions are about everyone having fun!
The Movement Motivator Volunteer will help our club members to get involved in some kind of activity during the club session. This will be some very gentle exercises during the club session to get everyone moving and there will be training provided about some of the activities that we are already using in other clubs eg, Body Boosting Bingo. Some of our club members have mobility problems and will need to exercise while seated and some will need to be persuaded to get moving. Club sessions are great fun and there's lots of banter!
You will be part of a team of volunteers who support each other. The club session is 1½ hours every week and on-going support will be provided by the Volunteer & Area Coordinators.
We need volunteers who can communicate well with others and can support club members who have memory or physical health problems. The most important skill is to be able to listen to club members and to encourage them to take part in the activities that are offered.
Come and join us to make a difference in the lives of older people!
