Legion Scotland (North of Scotland)

Charity registered in Scotland SC007785

Since 1921 we have provided support to veterans and their families.

When servicemen and women return to civilian life after serving with the Armed Forces some are in need of community and friendship, maybe as a result of their experiences in the services or purely because they are no longer part of the ‘military family’ they had come to rely. We make a difference every day to the lives of those veterans through our comradeship and befriending programme, developing strong communities and supporting remembrance.

Our large family network is spread across Scotland and helps support veterans and their families to get on with their lives and assists those who require assistance.

Current opportunities

Volunteers are needed to act as befrienders for isolated and lonely veterans and their dependents. Do you have an hour per week to have a chat and a cup of tea with an isolated and lonely person? Can you light up someone’s day by dropping in past to visit them, maybe meeting them in a café or accompanying them to an appointment? Training and support will be given and expenses, including mileage, repaid.

Do you have one hour a week to spend with a lonely or isolated ex-serviceperson? Could you brighten someone's day by visiting them for a cup of tea and a chat, or meeting them in a cafe or community space? Could you take someone along to one of our lunches or activities, and be a 'trusted friend' they can turn to when they are in need of help or advice? Our befrienders offer the lifeline of companionship, and relay any issues or needs to a local coordinator so they can be dealt with quickly and reliably. Our clients are ex-service people and their dependents (men and women). Our service covers the whole of Scotland, and we are recruiting now across the north east. In return you will gain valuable experience, enjoy our comradeship programme and have mileage and approved expenses reimbursed.

Volunteers are essential to Legion Scotland’s ability to support veterans in the community. We are currently recruiting volunteers for the Legion Scotland Veterans Community Support Service. Trained and supported volunteers will be matched with Armed Forces veterans to provide a befriending relationship in the community – this could take the form of a regular social visit to relieve isolation and loneliness, or to provide assistance with more specific issues at other times. Excellent training and support is provided and volunteers will be PVG (Protection of Vulnerable Groups) checked prior to contact with clients as well. This is not a personal care or advisory service. A tremendous opportunity to volunteer with Legion Scotland and support veterans. All assistance makes a difference and is greatly appreciated.
